Madison Bumgarner leads GreenJackets

Madison Bumgarner is leading the San Francisco Giants Lo "A" minor league affiliate Augusta GreenJackets in their  playoff hunt.  In game one of the series, Bumgarner has continued his sensational minor league season blanking the Ashville Tourists through seven innings.

In seven innings, Bumgarner has only allowed two hits, no runs, no walks and has struckout 10 Ashville Tourist batters.  Big V has the lone Augusta GreenJackets hit in a 1 - 0 Augusta lead through 7 innings.

Box score

Update:  Bumgarner pitched eight shutout innings allowing three hits while striking out 10 batters.  Closer Andrew De La Garza pitched a scoreless ninth inning saving the game in a 1 - 0 GreenJackets victory.

seems like he has a great pickoff move

Pickoffs: Bumgarner 3 (Mitchell at 1st base, Cunningham at 1st base, Rike at 1st base).

He picked off every runner he allowed. This guy is like the Chuck Norris of pitchers, without the hyperbole.

Bumgarner allows hitters to reach base

but only to pick them off and make them look stupid

Bumgarner doesn't even pick runners off

They pick themselves off so they can run and tell all their friends they got on first base against Madison Bumgarner

for they year

that makes 18 or 19 in total.

Only one hitter reached second base – and that was because Ciricao dropped the pickoff throw.
One LOB.

Tough luck loss for Asheville’s Graham—giving up 1 hit over 8 innings and losing. And that one hit—Villalona’s—was an infield hit. Bumgarner: 10k, 0BB.

Is Barnes going for Augusta next?

Graham matched him pitch for pitch, but Graham will be 23 in December. Usually it’s us who have to temper our enthusiam when one of our minor league players does well because they’re usually well over the average age, but for once our stars down there at the lowel level are just teenagers.

Mad Bum

Mad Bum is just 19 years, one month and two days old. VERY young for a league he dominated. I’m guessing he’ll skip right by San Jose.

I thought that in June of ’07 we were reviling Sabean for this pick and clamoring for Beau Mills.

And we’ve all since eaten crow on that one.

I don’t think I bemoaned the pick. But then again I didn’t know enough about either of them to feel like I should have an opinion.

Well, I at least didn't curse the pick.

I was mostly bemused by another pitcher. And then another one with the next pick.

Yes, there was some frustration there too. But I wasn’t angry.

Some posters were upset, but I think a fair number of people — including fearless-leader-McCoven president Grant — were open minded about Bumgarner because of the Giants’ track record with pitchers.

And to be fair

Maddy’s still a long way from being a big leaguer. Teenaged pitchers are dicey propositions, no matter how electric and exciting they are. The injury flameout potential is still high, (though hopefully MadBum will dodge the bullets and be up here domianting major leaguers for years to come).

And people were right about the bats, both Beau Mills and Jason Heyward are terrific prospects in their own rights. Heck the way this year’s going, Mills would probably be up by now if we had selected him (and would probably be our best power hitter).

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

It’s a play on the acronym TINSTAAPP, replacing the “P” for “Pitching” with an “H” for “Hitting”.

Of course, now that I’ve explained it, it’s not funny anymore. Only Johnny Carson could get a laugh out of explaining a joke. Carson = Genius.

As long as we're going to be all retrospecty

the serious scouting Gak was undervaluing Michael Burgess. We were one of many many teams that did it, but he would have been a great pick where we got Fairley and an outrageous one where we got Williams. Just because he plays for the nearest minor league club I’ve seen him a handful times this year and he’s really just got tremendous skills. Not just tools — he’s already translating the tools into game skills. And not just power — his defense is exceptional and his arm is extraordinary. Kid just looks like he’s got star written all over him. Not sure what the scouts were looking at.
