A number 5 that can win 10 or so games a year is pretty darn good.
I’m not sure he’s actually even that good. An ERA of 5.48 has to be below replacement level. In addition, he has about the same number of walks as strikeouts and a WHIP around 1.65.

because about 1/2 the time he pitches, he gives us a really good chance to win. It’s actually probably closer to 60%. He’s just awful in the other starts so it’s over quickly.
On a team that had a more potent offense, I think he would easily win 10 games.

I think there was a study that showed that the more catchers worked with the same pitchers, the better those pitchers did. So, while catcher ERA is bunk (if I’m remembering correctly) there is a correlation with experience between a catcher and pitcher.

why is McClain getting a HR such a big deal? I mean, it’s awesome, but I’m assuming there’s some sort of backstory I’m missing.
He's been in the minor leagues for about 3 decades
And has, IIRC, the current minor league record for career HR’s
….and had never hit one in the Majors.

It doesn’t make much sense for the Giants to be giving McClain starts, but it is nice to see the veteran finally get his first major league homer. He had 291 of them in the minors, plus 71 more in Japan.
Maybe because they wanted to give him a chance to hit that first ML homer?
