Worst All-Time Giants Team 83-08
Site whoring: I had fun writing this and I thought I'd share via the FANSHOT. I came up with the worst Giants roster from 1983-2008 (Essentially my lifetime of being a Giants fan).
Here's the roster:
1. 1992 Darren Lewis, CF
2. 2002 Tsuyoshi Shinjo, RF
3. 1992 Chris James, LF
4. 1995 Kirt Manwaring, C
5. 1999 Charlie Hayes, 3B
6. 1996 Steve Scarsone, 2B
7. 1995 J.R. Phillips, 1B
8. 2008 Omar Vizquel, SS
9. Pitcher

The OF would be pretty good, Shinjo and Lewis were fine defenders. Omar and Manwaring would be good on the infield.
Scarsone, Hayes, and Phillips are going to be poor defenders.
The thing is that I took into account defense some too, for example: Manwaring had a down defensive year in ‘95 and Lewis wasn’t as good in CF in ’92 as he was in the following few years.

Two Alternates
1B
Jose Vizcaino, 2006 – .194 Eqa (.210 / .304 / .261)
Phillips, 1995 – .207 Eqa (.195 / .256 / .351)
(although Vizcaino only played 11 G / 63 innings at first for us that year, that was still 11 G / 63 innings too many)
SS
Dreamy, 2008 – .165 Eqa (.185 / .249 / .215 )
El Malo, 2004 – .195 Eqa (.232 / .276 /.295)
BUT
Dreamy, 8 RAA2 in the field, and soooo luvable
and Niefi – 2 RAA2 in the field, and everyone hates him

Shinjo in RF is kind of cheating – he pretty much always played CF for us, no?
How sad is it that Neifi doesn’t even make the list?

It is cheating, but my team needed Shinjo.
Neifi would have made the list if it wasn’t for Omar’s year this year.

I have the same feelings toward Manwaring as you do. I really liked him as a kid and can’t remember why. I did go to school with his neice during his Giant years, maybe that helped. I dunno.

Glad to know that I’m not the only Manwaring lover. I think a good bit of my liking him had to do with that I had a few of his cards.

I liked Manwaring. He was a damn fine defensive catcher if nothing else.

After several years of Hill, Tamargo and Sadek and the like it tends to make Kirt Manwarring looks real good.

As much as the idea of Orel being a Giant was pretty repulsive, he wasn’t that bad of a pitcher.
If you addressed this in your post, the link didn’t work for me.

I'm sorry
I know you want to qualify the list to certain years, but some performances are so infamous that they have to be included — please add “Boo” to your list for shortstop

A few alternatives -
First base David Green 1985 (248/301/347) at age 24 . His batting line was not as bad as Phillips yet he was out of the MLB by age 27 and part of bounty the Giants got for Jack Clark. No that there is some brutal hope crushing.
For second I’ll see you Brad Wellman. Take your pick of 214/296/247 or 226/274/291 in ’83 or 84 at age 24 &25. Young "promising" talent to crush hope for winning! Honorable mention goes to Rennie Stennitt. The biggest Free agent the Giants signed before Barry Bonds but his tour was a couple years before your time frame.
You sure there is not room for Max Venable’s 219/295/364 at age 26? Or Greg Liton’s 1990 245/284/314 in our R.F. spot?
At third can I interest you in Enerst Riles say 90 ( 200/313/381) vintage? Ok so he played third mostly the year before but he could man it.
I do applaud your not going for the easy answers at SS in LeMaster of Nefi.

Great picks, Dave.
Thanks for the added insight. Max Venable is a great name, even if he wasn’t so good at the baseball thing.

Excellent job, Dave
It reminded me of some painful memories. David Green might have been the most galling acquisition; essentially trading Jack Clark for Jose Uribe = does not compute.
