Would you trade for Elijah Dukes?
Now I could only hope the Nats would stupid enough to part with him, you never know since it's Jim Bowden. I personally love Dukes potential. He may have some issues, but like Milton Bradley or Albert Belle, he is extremely talented and has a lot of raw potential. Which seemed to show itself to be turning into skills this year.
In 81 G, Dukes went .264/.386/.478 OPS + of 126
He also stole 13 bases and got caught 4 times. His defense needs a little work, but the guy is pretty raw as he has missed some games due to injuries or suspension over the last 2 1/2 years. But he seems to be the kind of young, undervalued talent who is prime for a breakout in the near future.
So would you take the risk of adding a potential breakout player, but one who comes with some major red flags due to both propensity for injury and due to personal problems on and off the field? Also, who do you think would be a reasonable offer in order to get him from the Nationals? And yes I realize that we have some OF depth, but I think everyone would agree that Dukes has much more upside than any of those OF's. And Winn and Rowand both look like trade bait to me, if we are actually serious about rebuilding this team with young talent.
Like I for one would be happy if we could somehow pluck Dukes and the oft injured Nick Johnson for maybe Sanchez + filler.

I like Dukes but I wouldn’t trade Sanchez for a package of him and Johnson. I’m not sure Johnson will ever be healthy again and the Giants need help at the infield.

I like Sanchez
But I’m wondering why you would be reluctant to trade him. Sanchez seems almost completely like someone we should sell on. He shows a lot of promise, and might even be capable of a good season or two, but he reminds me of Oliver Perez way too much, except not as good. Since Perez’s slider is a lot better.

I would be fine if Sanchez turned into a Perez-lite. That’s essentially a league average pitcher on the cheap. His slider might not be as good, but I don’t see how that matters.

Oh, and I’m not reluctant to trade Sanchez but I sure as hell wouldn’t trade him for an OF (the one position in which we actually have a few hitters) with attitude problems and a soon to be 30-year-old 1B who can’t stay healthy. He had a tear in his wrist this year and hasn’t been healthy since 2006.

Agreed in part
about Johnson. But it seems like the Giants aren’t going to be able to get good talent without getting someone. This is the type of buy low situation that I think could benefit the Giants. While true, Johnson can’t seem to stay healthy, when he is actually healthy he has seemed to be a pretty productive player. And if he failed, we always have Sandoval and Ishikawa to try out at 1st base anyway.
Dukes has attitude problems, and is a considerable risk, but is he really any riskier than Sanchez? And by that I mean Sanchez’s propensity for injuries. He has had issues staying healthy for a whole season throughout his career, both in the majors and minor leagues. And while yes we have some OF depth, how much of it do you really think can stick around for very long? Winn has 1 year left on his deal. Same with Roberts. Fred Lewis who knows what will happen with him, though he looks capable of sticking around. Rowand was a mistake to sign in the first place IMO. He has a history of injuries and the way he plays it’s likely he will breakdown before he reaches the end of his contract. We can only hope someone would be dumb enough to trade for him.
With Dukes there seems to be legitimate upside to his game if he can keep his attitude in check.

It’s not simply a bad attitude. This isn’t like a disgruntled or bitchy player. This is a person who has shown a pattern of violent behavior to his family members and his teammates. You can’t just wag a finger at him and tell “now don’t you go choking people or threatening your ex wife!” This sort of behavior isn’t easily corrected.
Pass.

Again
How is Dukes not like Albert Belle? This is a guy who spat on people, threw baseballs at reporters, punched people out etc. I’m not saying he’s going to “correct” his behavior. But if he can keep himself out of trouble for a bit and stay on the field he clearly has the ability to be a good player. Obviously this is a risky proposition, but sometimes when you are bad I think it’s worth taking risks. Especially if you can make them without giving up much. Granted Sanchez is valuable, but how much can we really get for him? Assuming we wanted to or did trade him.

He obviously couldn’t keep himself out of trouble thus far. What says he’ll somehow magically see the light? I’ve known, seen, dealt with, and sadly lived with too many of this type of person to know how the story ends.

I agree
But I think it’s wrong to entirely write people off too. Look at Josh Hamilton. Different situation obviously, but the dude was a freaking junkie and couldn’t stay clean.
But anyway, it doesn’t seem like he got into much trouble this year other than that one incident with Acta. Unless there were more incidents I’m not aware of.

Josh Hamilton needs a handler to make sure he stays clean. He nearly killed himself a few times to get to where he is. To me, Dukes doesn’t appear to be even close to being ready to accept that he’s a destructive human being. Until he does that, he can’t be fixed.

Update me on Sanchez’s injuries in the minor leagues. I can’t remember them. I thought Sanchez handled his workload about as good as can be expected of a guy that’s been yo-yoed between starting and relieving. He threw 158 innings this year after 75 total innings in ‘07, that’s a big increase.
2009 is the last contract year on Johnson’s deal, why trade for him? I’d rather play Pablo at 1B next year and wait Johnson out, if he enters the FA market cheaply, try to pick him up.
I think Lewis heads into ‘09 as the LF starter, some recent quotes from Sabes say as such. I’ve got a feeling Winn will be our RF for next year and Rowand is staying. Sabes sounds down on Nate, but he’s a possibility to play OF.
I like Dukes as a player and I think Bowden made a great move when he got him for next to nothing but I can’t see where he fits in right now with the team. He would be nice insurance for 1-2 years down the road but I don’t think you can trade Sanchez for him right now. Our rotation isn’t that deep. Who fills Sanchez’s spot? The Giants could very well non-tender Correia and Hennessey this winter.
