No more Omar, more Bochy, more...
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2008/09/29/sabean-vizquel-wont-be-back/
Aurilia could return at a later point this winter, but Omar won’t. “Zero chance,” said Sabean, who met with Vizquel yesterday.
Sandoval penciled at 1B for next season. Cain untouchable in a trade. All coaches will return. Bullpen will be a major project. Frandsen is a top contender for 2B next season. “We’re all pulling for him,” Sabean said.
I would normally make this a FanShot, but I reckon folks will wanna talk about it.

LOL @ the first comment:
Then that tells me they will trade Sanchez, Bowker and Velez to the Mariners for Beltre (free agent year) and Morrow.
Really? I might…might trade Bowker and Velez for Beltre straight up. Sanchez? No flipping way.
Anyway…some pretty good news there. As hard as it is to watch Richie flail away, he’s a pretty decent utility bench player.

He’s the guy the Mariners chose over Lincecum. They used him as a reliever/closer for most of the season but converted him back to a starter in September. 3.34 ERA with 75 Ks in 59.2 IP overall; 1.47 ERA as a reliever, 4.70 as a starter (he’s only had four starts though). In his first start, he no-hit the Yanks for 7 2/3 innings. Plus he’s a local kid from Santa Rosa.

For Sanchez, are you more concerned about injuries or ability to pitch a standard amount of starter innings for a whole season?

Pablo penciled in at first?
Not sure what I make of that. Part of me say why not lets him get time between c, 1st & 3rd . If he logs 150-200 innings and over 125 P.A.’s at 3rd that all gives him more time and gives the other first basemen that much more of a chance to maybe prove useful. The other part of me thinks, " How Sabean. Now he can lure Blalock or Crede and block any chance of adding value to Travis Ish and company."

Sabean talks the same shit every year. Every offseason and every trade deadline he talks about the big players he’ll be able to get cheaply because they’re arb eligible, and he somehow manages to never bring in anyone who fits that description. More and more teams are locking up their arb eligible players, and if he couldn’t do that before, he won’t be able to do it now. Sure, Brian, there’s plenty of arb eligible superstars out there that other teams will hand over for a package of less than Matt Cain.

When Has Sabean Said He Was Targeting Arbitration Eligable Players Before?
I only recall last year (the proposed Lincecum for Rios trade which Sabean (not Toronto) backed out of). This year Florida has 15 arbitration eligable players alone. There are plenty more on the other 28 rosters. I don’t see why we can’t go after some of the good bats amongst these without having to include either Lincecum or Cain.
by giantsrainman on Sep 29, 2008 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can agree with most of that. But not the Marlins. They really seem to only do the lopsided trade. He Who Create large tire Fires for Messenger might be the only exception I can think of recently.
Besides that I am tired of the MLB supplementing a Loria and his jumped of AAA club business model. That’s different rant though.

You much nicer then I.
After say 5-8 years of such actions I would like to see their share of ownership swapped to the AAA franchise with the best attendance, and orderly books, and that owner gets the same MLB shares. That will hit them were they live. Thus it will never happen .

Schierholtz
Personally, I don’t think I know enough about him…I certainly couldn’t tell you where he would hit in the order…But I’m not sure about him because of the smaller sample size, as opposed to a Sandoval, who is a no-brainer. He’s going to have to have a good spring training…
Wow. So 145 AB is enough of a sample size for you Sabean, but 5 years of great minor league numbers (plus pretty good numbers for Dodd) isn’t?

I Aam Hearing You Here
Career wise Schierholtz actually has more MLB ABs then Sandoval. I am thinking Sabean is really saying that hs scouting eye is not sold on Schierholtz while it is soldpm Sandoval. He is just using 2008 MLB sample size as an excuse to avoid having to discuss his specific concerns about holes he sees in Schierholtz’s swing.

Dammit. How did I miss this?
Anyways, El-P knows a lot of words, but that doesn’t mean that they have to go into every freaking verse. Does anyone even know what he’s saying on the first two songs of Fantastic Damage? Does he? Luckily, he’s a helluva producer.
Aesop Rock is kind of similar, but I think he’s just talking his own language by now. And when he isn’t making sense, he’s still 50 times more interesting than El-P.
Mr. Lif is awesome, but he has, like, two deliveries (Del-itis).
So give me the GZA or Sage Francis as the best around right now.
by Grant on Sep 30, 2008 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
EL-P is a talking dictionary sometimes but I just love his style. I think it fits perfectly with his production, which is amazing.
And don’t you go bad talkin’ Fan Dam, I won’t allow it. Did you hear his new album? It’s good, maybe a little more polished and not as gritty as Fantastic Damage.
I laughed at Aesop “might be talking his own language now”. Funny because it’s true.
GZA Liquid Swords? Hell yes. I still think Wu-Tang’s 36 Chambers is the greatest hip hop record of all time. The production still amazes me for a record thats over 15 years old.
I also like Sage but I never listened to him much past Personal Journals, am I missing anything? Do you like Dose One of cLOUDDEAD? That shit fries my brain, but in a good way.

Sage: Non Prophets’ Hope is start-to-finish amazing. I’ve never been huge on Personal Journals, though I appreciate it.
Don’t get me wrong — I love Fantastic Damage. I just hate about 40% of El-P’s rapping on it. But I still love the album. I have the instrumental version, too. I actually think El-P’s rapping improved 300% on I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, and I might prefer it. But if we’re talking El-P + good rapping, that = Cannibal Ox.
I know a lot of Anticon stuff, but other than Eyedea and Slug, I can never remember who’s who. Is Dose One the nasally fellow?

I love Cannibal Ox. The first time I heard The Cold Vein it blew me away.
Yeah, Dose is kind of nasally, but in a good way. You’ve got to listen to cLOUDDEAD’s s/t album. It’s Dose One, Why?, and Odd Nosdam. It’s what I would call collage-hop and it’s amazing. It’s definitely in my top-5.

I liked RJD2 before he went folktronic or whatever the hell he was trying to do. Deadringer is great.

i dont get kicking omar to the curb...not after his recent statements
he has accepted that his age and diminishing skills will not allow he to play everyday….but there will be a definite need for someone of his caliber to mentor the kids….and i dont like richie in that role
and i guess we are stuck with sabean for at least one more year…happy, happy….joy, joy

Giants main page has more explanation...
Story is here.
Asked if he could envision a scenario in which Vizquel would return to the Giants, Sabean said, “I see zero with Omar. We pretty much talked about that in person yesterday.”sounds like they talked (maybe Omar telling Sabean that he was done). Sabean NEVER gives absolute statements, so I’m guessing Omar gave him something pretty definitive. Otherwise it would’ve been “kick the tires on him”, or “at the end of the day”….

I don’t think Omar’s being kicked to the curb, I just think the sun has set on his time in the sun.

Omar's clock was tolling for almost two years
but Sabean kept hitting the snooze button.

Here’s a gem:
from a won-loss total, I think we were really affected losing Lewis and Burriss when we did.
So with Burriss and Lewis they lose 88 games instead of 90? wtf, man.

(Magowan) wanted to know what you thought and he knew how tough your job was. At the end of the day, he let you be yourself. He wasn’t interested in controlling people, how they act or dress.

Another
The good thing is I think we very much distinguished what our problems are. The bullpen was just not up to par talent-wise and performance wise. And we also know the lineup needs some injection of run-producing help.
Wow!

Oh boy why do I see 15 MM for 3 years of a professional arsonist or 3 in our future?
Perhaps a more then 110 IP from our #5 guy or more then ~ 100 quality innings Sanchez gave use would help the ‘Pen more? I will not even mention He Shall Not Be Named ( not even for $126 MM). Just a thought.

I can see it, we are going to go totally Milwaukee on the bullpen (acquire a bunch of expensive old relievers).

The future
The transcript make it clear the Giants are looking more to the future than the present. I see that as a very good thing.
