Who Should We DFA?
Tomorrow (September 29th) all players on the 60 Day DL must be returned to the 40 Man Roster or DFAed. The Giants currently have two on this list (Noah Lowry and Melkin Valdez) and 39 others already on the 40 Man Roster. Clearly the Giants will not be DFAing either Lowry or Valdez so who do they DFA to make room? I supose the Giants could just DFA either Richie or Omar since they both become free agents anyway after the World Series. But, I am betting that they do not choose to do this and instead DFA Alfonzo since it is clear (at least to me) that he has no future with the Giants while I still see a chance that the Giants could re-sign both Omar and Richie to be the backup infielders next year.

I lean toward 2 McClain, Omar and Roberts. I doubt Mr Roberts will be chosen though. Too much unproven players in the O.F. for managements tastes. My guess is Conor Gilaspie and McClain.
Though I could see Yabu, Rohlinger, or Holm being in the mix. Yabu was on a 1 year contract and would not be a compensated free agent. Rohlinger is useful to us but with only 3 seasons in the minors he would still be team controlled and not Rule V eligible.
As much as ‘08 Hennessey and Correia has been severely irritating they are not bad candidates for reclamation projects in ‘09 unless the team knows some thing from behind the scenes that we don’t. ( Ie. Work ethics, ‘tude etc.) With at least a years less MLB service time Hennessey wins any steel cage match if there is one.

I wouldn’t DFA Roberts. That guy is a true professional and I think if the Giants eat half his contract they could easily make a deal for him. I wouldn’t even object to them keeping him next year if they’re able to move some of the other veterans, especially Randy Winn.

Well its more about the roster slot to me then Roberts being pure trash. I acknowledge it’s a moot point because the management would not feel good about only 2 veteran outfielders and Lewis foot being worked on makes it way too risky for their blood.

come on, it’s Omar and Richie and Yabu. Guys whose contracts have expired. Why would you keep a guy on the 40 man when he’s no longer on the team?
by tyrannoman on Sep 29, 2008 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Richie they might think of resigning. They way the front office has handled Omar the last year or so has not been entirely logical so why expect it o start now? Walrus man has a point on Yabu being team controlled. As for why I think Conor ( or Rick Rhol) they are not veterans and Sabean does tend to be very vet friendly. This would continue that policy. It not like I want either one dropped right now just seems the Sabean way to do things.

Really?
Rohlinger could go off the 40-man roster without being exposed to another team? I thought once he’s on the roster, to get him off he has to be sent through waivers. Sure he still has options to go through, but that’s not the same as being taken off the roster.
Yabu is another good name to be removed though.

he has to go through waivers if he’s on the 40 man. that’s how it works.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
…but Yabu has only 2 years of ML experience, so the Giants hold his contract rights for next season; if they DFA him, they could lose him to a waiver claim. If they have any notion of bringing him back next year, they won’t DFA him. As a cheap, serviceable reliever, he would likely draw some interest from someone.
McClain seems the obvious candidate. He was taken off the 40-man last year without anyone paying any attention, so it seems likely they’d be able to send him back to Fresno for another season, assuming he’s willing to go back. And I agree that Alfonzo is expendable with Molina and Sandoval on the roster, Holm as insurance in AAA and Posey coming up.
With Aurilia and Vizquel, would DFAing them before their contracts expire affect their free agent status? I wouldn’t expect to get any compensation for Vizquel, but for Aurilia they might.
Scott McClain: Great story, no place on the 2009 Giants.
by EliminateMe on Sep 29, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alfonzo may be expendable..but what if the HORROR OF 3 CATCHERS happens? I happen to think this may be a good way to go, with Sandoval getting most of his starts at 3B and 1B with a few at C. I don’t think you can expend him if you’re keeping 3 catchers, as then either he or Holm would be the insurance with the other being the 3rd catcher.

by WalrusMan on Sep 29, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's fine...
…keep Holm as 3rd catcher. With 3 catchers on the roster, you don’t really need any more insurance for minor injuries. If one of them is out for longer, you call up Witter, or else you add Alfonzo or GROD back onto the 40-man if they stay in the organization. Or Whiteside if he re-signs. I’m just not that worried about the 4th catcher spot, even if the first 3 are all in the majors.
Scott McClain: Great story, no place on the 2009 Giants.
by EliminateMe on Sep 29, 2008 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, a couple of things. No matter how much service time a player has, if they’re DFA’d there is obviously a period of time in which they are definitely NOT under team control, as they’d have to be released/exposed to waivers (and losing young players on waiver claims is a little greater threat once the season’s over as team’s wouldn’t need to put the player on a 25-man, just on the 40-man where they could then exercise the same number of options that we could). While exposing Rohlinger to waivers might not be much of a gamble, it’s still a needless one when other, better options are out there (Alfonzo), and exposing our 2nd pick in the most recent draft to waivers would be an extraordinary gamble (and possibly create a grievance since putting him on the 40 man in the first place was part of the signing negotiations).
And secondly, while Hennessey and Correia could be decent reclamation projects, either will be a fairly expensive one. Hennessey made $1.6 mil this year (to toil in Fresno) and Correia just over $1. Both were on one year contracts so both are set for arbitration this winter, where their salaries cannot be less than 80% of their 2008 salaries. That means Hennessey cannot be offered less than $1.28 million for ‘09 if he forces them to arbitration. That’s a lot of reclamation hope — Henny looks like a definite non-tender candidate to me. Correia could be taken down to 800k which is more like it I guess, though his status certainly took a hit with his ’08 efforts.

Gillaspie?!?
The whole point of drafting him was that he was a polished college-type player who could move quickly.
Someone wouldn’t be averse to taking him and stashing him away on options for a year or two. Heck, I know the A’s wouldn’t mind getting a freebie 3rd base prospect, and I’m sure you could say the same about 10 other farm systems I know less about.

It’s either going to be Yabu or McClain. The Giants wouldn’t DFA Omar, and Richie they might re-sign. McClain and Yabu they could re-sign as well but I doubt they will, at least to major league only deals.
