How Do You Survive?
So, it's officially the off-season. 191 days until the beginning of the 2009 season. We have the playoffs to watch, including the Dodgers getting beat by the Cubs. We eagerly await the announcer of the winner of the Cy Young award. We have winter meetings to look forward to.
But what else keeps you guys sane? I go to school at the University of Oregon, and naturally, I miss my home by the bay. Its not easy surviving the off-season while at home, but its even harder up in Eugene. Sure, I have the 49ers, Oregon football, and Oregon basketball until pitchers and catchers report to camp, but it's no Giants baseball. So, any suggestions to keep me occupied, besides school work...?

Jameson and PBR
Got me through school at SDSU (barely)
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

I kind of like Rolling Rock and Moosehead for cheap beers
At least over Bud/Coors/Miller/PBR.
I still haven’t met a Sam Adams I dislike. The Summer Ale is the best beer for a 110 degree Central Valley afternoon.

As the self-appointed happysuds expert round these parts, PBR is an abomination.
If ever I wanted to drink something that tasted like piss, I’d gladly go with a Coors Light or Bud (shudder). There is no place, NO PLACE, for something as rancid as Olympia, Ol’ Milwaukee, or PBR.

Baseball is the only sport I’m interested in, so the offseason can be tough. I’m usually burnt out by the end of the season, but by December or so, I start getting itchy for baseball again. A few years ago, during the offseason I actually started listening to archived games via gameday audio, I missed it so much! But I’ve got a kid now, so I don’t have time for that now.

I’m similar in the sense that, today I’m sad that the season is over, but I could use a break. But by December, I need it back. I’m usually home for winter break and I will always go get dinner at Acme Chophouse once over the break. I’ll also take pictures of the ballpark.

Also being a Niner fan, I do find entertainment during the offseason (though less these days than in 1981-2000), but the weeks between the Super Bowl and Spring Training can be tough. I recommend lots of Roger Angell, Burns’ “Baseball” and Maker’s Mark. Also daily visits here, Grant’s House of Fun and Dangling Participles.

that’s sorta funny, since Newcastle should be relegated back to reality this at the end of this season. Coca-Cola Championship League FTW!!
Of course, in this same reality Hull City will stay in the top six. I fully expect that once Newcastle actually finds a manager, they should stave off relegation.

It will be old skool hip hop, indie, metal, ironic dad rock, and funk, probably.

throw on Tim Dog’s "Fuck Compton’ while you at it. But mix in ‘Concord’ instead of Compton.

I read. I read a lot of books. Then I read some more. I’m going to barnes&noble at lunch today to get my first dose. Any suggestions? (non-baseball please, it’ll just make me check for Giants rumors more frequently)

Me?
Lots of work. Coaching and baseball on the weekends starting back again in January. Sharkies and Warriors are always fun. Going to stay as updated as possile w/ the little Giants as well.
Oh yea, and I just moved in with the girlfriend this weekend. That should definitely be an experience that will take up some of my time… I don’t know if it will necessariy keep me sane, though.

Niners and Warriors. I love football and basketball, but not as much as baseball. Oh yeah, my wife is about to give birth to our first child, so that might take up some of my time.

I'd say you have a better than 99.99% chance of being kept busy this offseason with a newborn
Late night feeds, diaper changes, endless photo sessions with the digital camera, staying up when he/she is sick. (I’ve been up since 3:30 this morning — it’s 6:00 am now — keeping an eye out on a feverish older daughter.) But it’s all worthwhile.
Congrats!

I think also...
We survive by not talking about this topic until about a week in or so instead of the night of the last game. That way we can waste two days on it later instead of now.

Good work man
I have about 20 to lose myself. It all began when we got dressed on the day of my best friend’s wedding and she said to me, “dear, you look pregnant.” It’s never too late and anyone can do it. Kudos to you. And hopefully me too.

Be careful with that!
I haven’t been able to lose weight for about 10 years now. After jumping up and down and yelling, and showing a food / exercise log [~1400 calories a day and 2-3 hours at the gym a day] to the doctor, he finally condescended to allow me the privilege of getting my thyroid checked.
My thyroid apparently is not working correctly and we’ve yet to find the right combination of meds to (a) help get the weight off and (b) keep me awake in the afternoons!
So if you try to lose weight, and you can’t, have some blood work done! Don’t wait as long as I did! Oh, and if necessary get a new doctor!

For me...
Starting to get frustrating. I’ve gained probably around 20-30 pounds in….year and a half? Always used to stay the same weight whether I ate anything under the sun or nothing under the sun. I guess that means I have to start being normal and exercise.

I know your metabolism slows down as you age, and that doesn’t help weight loss. That’s why I waited so long to go to the doctor with my concerns. I probably worked out and dieted for 5 years before I figured there had to be something else going on. Then, since I have Kaiser?? it took 2 more years, and 2 doctors before I could get a test done. They kept telling me I was too young for my thyroid to be an issue. So much for med school.

Oh lord, Kaiser is terrible. I’d rather go without insurance than go to Kaiser. I apologize for the shitty treatment you got there. :(

Ya, we keep a close eye on all my hormonal stuff because of a family history of diabetes. We’ve checked my thyroid and it’s a little on the high side of activity, which should mean I can lose weight. My doctor is really cool and he’s never been on me to lose weight. All my bloodwork comes back good. I just want to lose weight for me.

Maybe we should start an off-season weight-loss support group. Now that we aren’t going to the park and eating cha-cha bowls and garlic fries we can live on carrot sticks and raisin bran.

Well, a few things..
First thing I do is keep watching the rest of the baseball season. Playoffs, World Series and all that.
Lots of books, Ken Burns for nostalgia, and lots of hot stove gatherings. Maybe some wiffle on warm(ish) days.
