Lincecum for Rios -- Remember this Kawakami Gem?

I was surfing the net looking for some Lincecum stats when I came across this gem from last year.

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2007/12/05/lincecum-for-rios-thats-a-trade-the-giants-have-to-and-probably-will-make/

First of all I hate Tim Kawakami. The man is no different than Skip Bayless and will write anything to get a rise out of the people to sell papers. Had the Giants actually done what he suggested, he would be calling for Sabean's head right now.

I was just talking about this yesterday

My roommate and I were talking about how if this trade actually went down, knowing how they both played last year, we would go searching for Brian Sabean with baseball bats

I referenced this article the other day too, when Kawakami was talking about how good Lincecum is. Not a reference to the fact that he wanted Timmy out of here for Alex Rios. No accountability necessary in the media. He would have been the first to jump all over Sabean if he had actually made this trade.

This is what gets me
No accountability necessary in the media.

If a writer can be flat-out wrong time after time and still retain his job, the newspaper has no credibility. Thousands of people would love to have Kawakami’s job — and they’d actually try hard to be accurate out of respect to the readers.

Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

To be fair, it isn’t as if I go back and give mea culpas for every time I’m wrong, which is often.

Yeah, but you write in an open forum where you can be called on anything at any time. Kawa really doesn’t and he writes in a know-it-all manner when he really doesn’t know shit.

He may know nothing, but I doubt it

These columnists would be TOTALLY unreadable if they didn’t stick their necks out.

Take a middle road, or go with the mass opinion? I’ll stop reading. How about you?

We desire opinion — even edgy, sometimes unfounded opinion. That — by the way — is one feature that makes this site terrific.

And if a guy is constantly apologizing for making bum guesses, that would be byeccch. He can nod to the goof or ignore it, but I’d rather he spout out his next outrageous opinion.

Woody, you’ve got to update that sig since LaRoche is gone. You could just replace him with McDonald, if you wanted.

Yea that and I think we’re pretty sure what they’re getting with Kemp and Loney.

If Rios is comparable to Winn now, he’ll always be comparable to Winn, is that what you’re saying? Please. Please!

Rios 2008 OPS+: 111
Winn 2008 OPS+: 107

Advantage: Unpaid guy in his mom’s basement.

At least Judy Steffes was able to correctly identify third base as a problem for the Giants. Kawakami seemed to think left field was a gaping void for the Giants, even with Fred Lewis, Nate Schierholtz, John Bowker, and Randy Winn all capable of playing the position.

oh my

I remember last year my primary reasoning for not wanting to trade Timmy for Rios was that Rios would’ve been the only “big bat” in the lineup. I guess I was too scared that Mr. Soon-to-Be-Cy-Because-He-Had-the-Best-NL-Pitching-Performance-This-Season was fragile or something.

What a fool was I….

One of the first commenters wanted to trade Lincecum, Alfonzo, “Shierholtz,” Lewis, and 3 minor league pitchers for Cabrera and Willis.

It bothers me that people as fucking stupid as that guy

get paid to fuckin write. He’s a total ass and knows nothing about baseball, or football for that matter. Fuck him.

I think it's fair to say that he should be fired for that article

Crow tastes great

I believe I said at one point last year that we ought to at least consider that trade. I was so very very very very wrong. Not so much because I didnt believe in Timmy, but I really overrated Rios. You guys were almost all right, I was so wrong. 55,000 lashes. Please forgive me McCoven!

I throw myself onto the fire

In this case, it was better to be wrong. I’ll even do you one better—I actually said it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if the trade happened. Ask BruteSentiment. He can tell you.

Wouldn't have been the absolute worst...

…after all, they could have thrown in Sandoval to sweeten the deal. That would’ve been worse.

I’ll have to think about that one.

It’s okay to consider the trade, however. Due dilligence and all that, but you really do need to go through the trade completely, then realize it’s not in the best interests of the giants’.

by tyrannoman on Sep 29, 2008 8:39 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

lolin’

Blue Jay fan here, and I don’t want the Jays to make this trade. Absolutely not. But I am curious about one thing. Everyone says "one player isn’t going to help us". We need more than Rios. We need "great hitters, we need super stars". Where are you going to get them. Obviously, not the FA market, you don’t have a big enough budget. From your farm system? All you have down there are pitchers, and you don’t want to trade any pitchers. You want to have 5 top of the line pitchers. So what are you using to improve your team???? You had Cain and Linc last year. How many wins did you get from them? And how many more will you get this year?? You have to give something to get something these days. To improve a team, you have to start with one player, and go on from there.

Question

What’s the Giants record this year if they had made that trade?

Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.

by thehavenot on Sep 29, 2008 2:07 PM PDT   0 recs

Well

Trading for Rios => not signing Rowand. We would have had Rios in RF, Winn in CF, and Lewis in LF. Winn in CF is about as good as Rowand, so we basically just need to replace Rowand’s bat with Rios’s. According to BP’s Batting Runs Above Average, Rios was worth 18 runs more than Rowand. According to StatCorner’s bRAA, the difference is 12. Let’s put it at +15 runs.

Now, I’m not sure whom should I compare Lincecum to, since trading for Rios => not signing Rowand => freeing up money to sign a pitcher. Rowand’s money could have gotten us something like 200 IP of 4.3 (~league average) ERA. Replacing Lincecum’s production with that would have cost us about 50 runs.

50 runs on defense – 15 runs on offense = 35 = ~3.5 wins. Our record would have been something like 68-94.

Or something.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Their record would have been horsecookies

But after the Sabean suicide, Paul DePodesta would have a clear plan for the Giants.
