Olney thinks Giants can get Fielder or Howard for Cain this offseason

Insider content on ESPN.com, I'll just cut/paste the relevant part re: Matt Cain:

"2. As the Giants consider ways to bolster the power in their lineup, GM Brian Sabean can go into the winter knowing that he can probably add a major hammer, if he ever decides to dangle Matt Cain, and two options could be Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder. Each of those sluggers has failed to reach long-term deals with their respective teams, each will see their salary escalate quickly through arbitration, and the Phillies and Brewers would love to add a power arm like Cain. "The Phillies could go out and find somebody to drive in runs in their park in place of Howard," said an AL general manager. "But in that bandbox, they will always have trouble finding pitching. Cain misses bats; he'd be perfect for them." And after this season, the Brewers will lose CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets to free agency, at a time when they have emerging position prospects; they can find somebody to play first but will need an anchor for their rotation, and Cain would serve that purpose."

While I would absolutely hate to lose Matt Cain because he is just an absolute stud, I think that any rational GM would have to consider doing a Cain-Howard or Cain-Fielder deal, especially given the strength of our starting pitching down in the minors.

Any thoughts?

Really?

The Brews/Phils would love not to pay these guys big money in order to get a locked-in Cain at a discount? I’m shocked and appalled.

No-Brainers

I think the chance to get either Prince Fielder or Ryan Howard for Matt Cain is a no-brainer — with three exceptions:

First, heavy first baseman such as these two are have tended to break down in their early 30’s.

Second, if Matt can ever harness his control, he could indeed become most of what we thought he could be.

Third, Matt is under contract cheaply for three more seasons and appears to love the Giants, making it less likely he will leave for free agency. I believe Fielder’s agent is Scott Boras. Not sure about Howard, whose huge strikeout rate makes it hard for him to hit for average.

So perhaps the decision isn’t a no-brainer after all. Cain, Ishikawa and Villalona for Howard and Rollins? Another possibility for both huge pluses and huge minuses.

If the Phillies threw in Cole Hamel though, I’d do the deal. :)

[obligatory comment pointing out that Cain is better, cheaper, easier to sign, and a smaller injury risk than Fielder]

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

so because we need more than one big bat, we shouldn’t get any?? How does this make sense?? Go out and get a Fielder or Howard, it’s a start. By the way, my vote is for Fielder, he’s younger and doesn’t strike out 200 times a season.

As a one for one trade its a stupid move. Besides creating a hole to fill a hole ( for a shorter amount of time) the team would also be trading down the position scarcity. Their as more hard hitting first baseman then solid #2 pitchers in the league.. There are more players that can bat in the hart of the order then #2 pitchers. Its a selling for a dime on the dollar. Ok maybe between 1-2 quarters on the dollar in the case of Fielder.

I agree I would rather have Fielder then Howard.

all this talk about Fielder for Cain is probably ridiculous, because we don’t even know if Melvin is keeping his job after what could be a second straight late season collapse. His team seems to have gotten it together, but if they fail to make the playoffs he could be history, and even if he and Sabean WERE working on some kind of major deal it would be all out the window.

Ryan Howard sOPS+ 117
Prince Fielder sOPS+ 117

Either would become the best hitter on the Giants but they aren’t truly amazing hitters for their position. I liked Howard and Prince better when they were OPS+ing over 150.

If Sabean turns Cain into an overweight 1B who might be in decline (Hi, Mo Vaugh) then I will cry tears.

Mo Vaughn was old, had arthritis and had already gotten his money. Prince Fielder on the other hand is just about Cain’s age and still working towards that first gigantic contract. He has alot of incentive to not eat his way into oblivion. I just can’t see this trade happening anyway. Since the AJ trade, Sabean doesn’t seem to have the stomach for huge deals involving young pitching. It’s alot safer for him to field a crappy team and point to all the kids on the horizon. And from Milwaukee’s point of view, Fielder is already an elite superstar, and Matt Cain, although having elite ability is just a young pitcher who continues to post losing records. Other teams will discount the “tough luck pitching for a bad ballclub” argument because of the incredible success Tim Lincecum has had with the same team.

Ryan Howard doesn’t make a lot of sense though.

I’d do Cain for Fielder + Hardy but how realistic is that?

Prince doesn’t concern me too much about his aging but people forget that Howard got a late start to his MLB career and is already 28-years-old. He’s nearing that age when big guys like Sharksrog noted start to fall apart.

Both have declined some this season, but I haven’t looked at their underlying stats to see whats the deal.

PrOPS has Fielder at .290/.387/.537 for the season, which is a significant step up from his actual numbers. It’s also worth noting that Miller Park isn’t really a homer haven for lefties, just for righties.

I'm no fan of Howard, because of the Ks

but while he’s big, he’s certainly no fatty like Mo Vaughn.

everybody thinks that the Giants can get anybody they want (except Pujols) for Matt Cain. But NO ONE has cited one example of any actual discussions going on. NO ONE has cite anything other than the Giants refuse to even engage in any sort of negotiations re Cain and won’t even entertain offers.

Now, it certainly is worth listening to big offers, but having Cain for 3 more years at an uber-reasonable price is a big help to the financially inept Giants.

The Giants basically have 6 starting pitchers under contract for next year:
SP – Tim Lincecum – $405K
SP – Matt Cain – $2.65MM
SP – Jonathan Sanchez – $400K
SP – Noah Lowry – $4.5MM
SP – Barry Zito – $18.5MM
SP/RP – Kevin Correia – $1.075MM

That amounts to about $27.5M for 6 guys, which is about $4.5M per guy. that’s on the high side, but not that bad. Since Lowry isn’t likely coming back, the team would have to replace Cain with somebody. CC wouldn’t be the answer. Even if he got Gil Meche money ($11M per) that’d still increase the price of the starting rotation by a about $8M, and CC will definitely get more than that, unless there’s major backloading of the deal.

Anyway, no one in the Giants system is ready to be a major league starter that isn’t already one, which means they’d have to get one via trade or free agency (more $). If Howard were the guy, for example, perhaps the Phils would throw in Kyle Kendrick or somebody like that, but it would definitely be a downgrade from Cain. The rotation would be Lincecum, an inconsistent Sanchez and a bunch of crap. And we still wouldn’t win next year.

I suppose you could take your lumps next season and wait for Mad Bum and Alderson to get here in 2010/2011 (assuming they’re sure things), but why not just wait until then to deal with Cain? He’s a FA after 2011. He’d most certainly be a type A FA if he left and in 3 years, the budget will likely be bigger than now. Plus, Posey will be up and Villalona will be close, if not up already.

The bottom line is that the Giants seem to be committed to rebuilding through the draft and international signings over the course of several seasons, and while a trade and free agent signings will happen here or there, a huge trade like this, before the team is ready to compete, doesn’t necessarily fit in with that strategy of building home grown talent and riding out the bad years while letting the kids develop.

Bonds stands alone.

by nostocksjustbonds on Sep 26, 2008 10:37 AM PDT   0 recs

Why would CC not be the answer?

We have very few position players under contract for significant money next year (Winn, Molina, Rowand, Roberts) and I expect at least two of those to be gone this offseason. So what if we have Zito for $18.5M next year? CC is an obvious stud who will definitely be worth whatever we pay him. What’s the problem with tying up $35M in two pitchers if you can afford to pay them and your total payroll will be under $75M? If we trade Cain for Fielder or Fielder and Hardy (as some rumors have suggested) our lineup would look like this:
C – Molina, Sandoval
1B – Fielder, Sandoval, Ishikawa?
2B – Frandsen, Velez, Burriss
SS – Hardy, Burriss, Ochoa
3B – Sandoval, Frandsen, FA
LF – Lewis
CF – Rowand
RF – Winn, Schierholtz
SP – Lincecum, Sabathia, Sanchez, Zito, Lowry/FA/Minors

I think if we can get some middle relief, that team would definitely contend for the NL West.

rather have

CC+Prince or Cain+Tex? toss up. I guess Cain/Tex would be cheaper, though CC+Prince would be more popular among the overweight fans and give us a 4 AND a 5 (every fifth day) hitter

by sam23 on Sep 27, 2008 2:28 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

but we could also have

Cain+Tex+CC if we really wanted. I think we should do that actually, if possible. If CC would come at a discount, which he probably would for us, we could have enough money for Tex to come here too. Or we could just go CC+Cain and no Tex and wait for AnVil to get to the bigs or see if Ishikawa breaks out. Either way, I really want CC. It’s not often one of the best pitchers in baseball really wants to play for your team when you didn’t even offer him anything and I think we should take advantage of that…

by boonitez on Sep 27, 2008 11:43 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i really like CC too

but CC AND Tex? I really dont see how thats possible unless we were able to dump Zito. CC isnt goint to take THAT big of a discount to play here.

Well, if he is going to play in California he will already be turning down a huge contract from the Yankees.

That will be the real test. If it is all about the money, the Yankees are the ticket. If he really wants to be in the bay, he will have to take a pay cut.

Howard declining already?

I haven’t watched Howard much at all but I see that since his MVP season (167 OPS+) he’s posted a 144 OPS+ in 2007 and a 121 in 2008. That’s the difference between, well, an MVP caliber performance, and a pretty good first baseman, and it’s not an encouraging trend line.

If Howard was so great do you really think the Phillies would have a problem giving him an extension? It’s not like they are poor.

I'm already tired of saying this, and it's technically not the offseason yet!

In a situation like the Giants are in, where very good talent is a rare commodity, trading ONE valuable established major leaguer for ONE other valuable established major leaguer (of approximately equal value) DOES NOT improve this team!

Ryan Howard was born to DH

He really should be playing in the AL and only touching grass during interleague play (ala David Ortiz.) Even JT Snow couldn’t turn that guy into an average fielder. I would consider Prince + Hardy for Cain, but there would have to be contract extensions involved and I am still not sure the Brewcrew would be up for that deal

He is a Giant and will always be a Giant if given the opportunity. That sort of loyalty can pay off with lower dollar value contracts. He’s also pretty good and likely to get better.
