Time for some changes
The Giants must make some changes if they want to compete in MLB. First they must make changes to the yard to bring in power hitters. Bring in the damn fences a little for god's sake. I know you can't move the wall in right but 421 to right center is a joke and the left center power alley must be moved in a little.
People want to see a little more power output by this team. Rowand is not the only one grumbling about the yard. If they don't change the fences a little the Giants will always have to overpay for power. I know there are those who don't want to mess with the sacred yard we call AT&T park but if you want a championship it must be done. The small ball era is dead and gone. Power numbers are the present and the future of baseball.

I hate watching games in ballparks where cheap fly balls are HR’s.

The only way I’m moving the fences is if my foot happens to be stuck underneath them in a way that prevents me from getting my foot out without moving the fences.
But seriously, the park suppresses some homeruns, yes, but we’d see a lot more homeruns if we had players who could actually hit them to begin with. Even the Padres have two guys who hit 20+ (one who hit 30+) at their yard. I don’t remember anybody complaining when Bonds/Kent/Sanders/Bell were all hitting 20+.

The yard is a non-issue
It’s a NEUTRAL PARK that favors neither hitters nor pitchers. What it takes away in HRs it gives back with the lack of foul territory, 2Bs & 3Bs.

No.
The park used to be an advantage in 2000-2003, when we had better power hitters than most teams that visited. I believe the Giants have simply assembled a lot of hitters with little or no power. Thus, they cannot get back in games when the other teams get large leads. Visiting teams with real power hitters have no trouble leaving the yard on a regular basis.

I happen to hope there is, at least for the fanpost type thing. For me I look at a new person here as someone who does need to prove himself. If he sticks around he’s usually even good. But my favorite people here either were here before I started, or are people who don’t post fan posts all the time, but comment in them, comment in the gameday threads, and generally learn the blog.
It’s just from me being online so much, for basically 8-9 years now, that usually the newbies who come on and just post one thing are either going to not stay, or post that same type of post several times and then leave. When someone is interested in what other people have to say instead of someone being interested in what they have to say, they add much more to the community.

This is a public forum , not some exclusive socialite venue……or is it?
So they post and move on – what lasting , unspeakable pain does it cause you? Of course then it’ll only serve to support your assumption , but if they bravely post their opinion and you ridicule them for it what are the chances they’ll be masochistic enough to come back for more?

I’m newish, and I don’t post much on gameday threads – why does that make my opinions any less valid than yours? Why should you get to feel superior just because you joined this blog 2 years before me?
This guy got gang banged for writing 3 lines about a subject that (OMG) has already been discussed. Like victor said: What lasting, unspeakable pain did reading that comment cause? Or is it the 4 seconds of your life that you (well not you in this case) wasted on reading it?
This is a blog. Nobody has to prove anything. Anyone can post a FanPost. If it bores you – don’t read it. If it’s a double post or something like that – delete it. It’s pretty simple.

I think you’re both overinterpreting WalrusMan. He said new people have to prove themselves to him. He didn’t say they HAVE to prove themselves against a barrage of ridicule. I just acknowledged that happens.
And you’re definitely twisting his words in trying to figure this against you somehow.
I mean, seriously, if you don’t just just knee-jerk overreact to somebody saying something even remotely negative about new members, you’ll see all he’s saying is that he doesn’t invest himself in a new member until that member has shown that they’re actually interested in being a part of the community. It’s not some proclamation against anybody who has less than 7,000 comments.
For crying out loud, people can really irrationally jump on any comment that even barely suggests that there are new members who don’t contribute anything.

He said that he’d appreciate a short probationary period before you could post a FanShot,, not some strange, unheard of comment limit. The probationary period is really common among SB blogs. Grant chooses not to do it. That’s the only thing.
He did say that he tends to like posters more when they comment regularly. He didn’t even say “when the have lots of comments.” I don’t see what’s so weird about that. He never said he thinks those who haven’t made a lot of comments should.get railed on or have some sort of limited n00b treatment..

I'm not saying that they shouldn't..
But I think that members should by their own conscious just learn the community before jumping into it. For example, if you join, read for a couple days, notice many posts talk about OPS, OPS+, and other “advanced” stats (many I don’t understand, but trust others understand) instead of AVG and HR to talk about a player, then you’ll be most likely not to post a fanpost on “OMG THIS GUYS AVERAGE HIS GOOD” when he’s hitting for a .300 average but only with a .320 OBP and .340 SLG. We can pretty much tell that a .660 OPS is pretty meh in this place. Also they’ll be able to see that fan post that happend 2 days ago discussing the topic that you want to post about, and instead of making your own fanpost you can just add your thoughts to the older fan post.
I’m not against new members to the blog, I’m just someone who waits for the new member to gain respect instead of giving them respect.
For example, a new guy shows up on the job. Do you automatically trust him with the Big Johnson project? Or do you start him as an observer on the Smaller Smith project? You don’t give him a huge important project right off the bat, you’d start him watching other projects, then doing smaller projects until he’s gotten enough knowledge and respect to learn the job.

Don't believe small ball is dead.
You have to have a group of good players be it with power or not to win.
The small ball era is dead and gone. Power numbers are the present and the future of baseball.
Look at the team 2nd to last team in home run totals this year, the Twins, they’re leading homerun hitter, Morneau, has 23, albeit more than any Giant but not a monster total by any means. And yet they’re still only a half game behind in the AL Central. How have they done it? Good Pitching, good defense and timely hitting, not by mashing homers. So your point that this team can’t win without a Homerun bomber in the lineup to me is not a valid one. But I will admit having one would help, but you can still win by playing small ball. Because the last time I checked small ball includes getting hits, which in turn I believe score runs.

The twins
have scored about 70 more runs than you would expect from their OPS. That’s timely hitting alright. And pretty lucky.
Also, their pitching is totally average. Their pitching is basically average+, with a good bullpen. They’re an 85 win team with some clutch hits and a weak division.

Changing the "yard’ is not an option. The issue is not with the yard, it is with the current roster.
When it is all said and done for 2008, I am feeling somewhat optimistic. The Giants drafted well this spring, had a few surprises here and there, and of course Timmy’s very good year on a bad team.

It’s not that it is such a bad park, it’s just really a “white-bread” type of place. Think Jeff Kent’s personality, no real “soul” or character. I have to been to quite a few parks across the country. Many of the “older” parks (Fenway, Wrigley ) have character and quirks that make the place come alive. Pac-Bell has that without all of the smelly alleys and sticky seats.

about how the Giants should tear down ATT and build in its place a huge mountain. Then build a new park on this huge mountain where the air is much thinner. Thinner air would lead to more homeruns thus making baseball more exciting for the fans who don’t understand baseball. Problem solved.
