Winter Ball
Does anyone know which Giants are heading to winter ball? So far Noah Lowry will pitch in Mazatlan, Mx, and Kevin Frandsen, Emmanuel Burris are going to AZ Instructional league. I know other players are going to different countries....?? Oh and does anyone here go and check it out??? I would if i could... ok
Anyway to make it to 75 words am sad that baseball season is almost over... but am excited for 2009....

Lowry had a setback and might not make it to the winter league.
Left-hander Noah Lowry is experiencing discomfort behind his throwing elbow, which has temporarily stopped his comeback efforts, manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday.
Bochy said that Lowry, who will undergo further tests, won’t participate in the early portion of the Mexican Winter League schedule for Mazatlan, as he had planned. Bochy didn’t rule out Lowry’s participation later in the season.

Yeah, most likely. This is why signing pre-arb deals can be good for players.

He’ll be making $4.5M next year and he made $2.25M this year.

If he can’t play next year, the Giants will have paid him more for each of the 2 years he didn’t pitch for them than for the five years he did put together.

what happened to Lowry?
I mean why did he just lose the ability to strike people out all of a sudden? Chanegup get too predicatable? Lost velocity? Poor control got even worse?

Control problems as a side effect of his arm turning to jello.

Lowry’s biggest problem was that he stopped striking people out:
2004: 7.04 K/9, 2.74 BB/9.
2005: 7.55 K/9, 3.34 BB/9.
2006: 4.74 K/9, 3.16 BB/9.
2007: 5.02 K/9, 5.02 BB/9.
He also had control problems in 2007, but it looks to me like the real decline started between 2005 and 2006. That kind of a drop in K’s just isn’t supposed to happen, especially to a 26 y-o. IIRC, Lowry had a pretty bizarre oblique injury in the beginning of 2006. That’s probably a big part of his decline.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

I actually graphed his BB% and K% last year. It’s not pretty.

It’s pretty sad. He really was a good pitcher in 2005 and 2006. When he was 25 he was about as good as Cain is right now.

Actually I meant 2004 and 2005. He was already bad in 2006.

BlahBlah Guiterrez, I mean, Amy Guiterrez, gave a list of those bound for the fall and winter leagues last night on the broadcast. I was too busy telling her to STFU and throwing things at my television to catch it all, however. I thought I heard something about John Bowker going to one of the Caribbean leagues.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

I think it’s cool that they named a town after a Grateful Dead song. Handy location for Romo. The club site lists his home town as Brawley, that’s 25 miles away. Isn’t his dad a water engineer or something? If we get real real bored this winter we could improve wikipedia on these guys.
