Lame if true

JT was cut by Boston in June 2006. If they wanted to give him the retire-as-a-Giant treatment, why not that year? Or , if JT still had ideas that he might be able to sign on somewhere, they could have done it the end of last year. At this point it just looks like a silly stunt. Why not do the same with Mays and get him out on the field too? Maybe they can sign a posthumous contract with Bobby Bonds and he can retire a Giant too.

What a sad ploy to try to increase attendance for the final homestand. Bonds would have made more sense for this, and could have been done months ago to help the Giants have a shot at the division.

I just don’t see what’s wrong with fanservice, I guess.

By and large, fans remember JT very fondly. People are going to get a kick out of this. And JT gets to put it all on one more time, step out on field, and get some sort of ovation.

What’s so sad about it? It’s not making anybody’s lives worse, and for all intents and purposes, the most harm it can cause is putting a nostalgic smile on a few ten thousand people’s faces.

The best part of this is that the article on sfgiants.com declares that “this isn’t just ceremonial”, apparently because he’ll actually go out to 1B and then be yanked before the first pitch. How exactly is that not just ceremonial?

Yeah, I really don’t understand the disgust here. And I usually understand the disgust here. Even if it’s an obvious marketing ploy, it’s not like it’s a devious or evil ploy. It’s a ploy designed very simply around the fact that this is going to give a lot of people genuine joy.

I mean, really, where’s the problem with that?
