Lincecum for Cy Young: Ballot Stuffing
I have a crazy idea but don't the time to deal with it, so I thought I would post this here in case anyone is as crazy (or more so) than I am.
I don't know who are the two NL beat writers who get to vote from each NL city for the Cy Young award, but what if someone puts together a nice Tim LIncecum stats package, find and post the beat writers e-mail addresses, and a number of interested Giants fans reading this would e-mail this stats package to each voter, perhaps we can influence the vote.
The genesis of this scheme is the common refrain I've heard over and over again about Lincecum's chances: he should win BUT the voters might not even be familiar with Lincecum's achievements, particularly the East Coast writers, other than that stats that show up in newspapers, wins, strikeouts. By a number of us sending such information, hopefully one gets through to the writer and he's informed.
Don't know if this would work, but it would sure be a heck of a story for the Internet age.
I would nominate Sharkrog to write up the standard boiler plate letter except that he might be too busy too.

Schulman’s piece in today’s Chron is pretty good.
I’ll do my part by referring to him as “The Cy Hey Kid” until voting is complete.

I have already resigned myself to the fact that Webb is going to win the CYA. The mediots who vote see wins and nothing else.
This will be Schmidt in ’03 all over again.

Heh…true. Seems we have some anti-Giant bias when it comes to this award.

Nothing like '03
In ’03 Gagne had what was arguably the greatest season ever for a closer/reliever. Schmidt had a very good year but nothing historic. This is why Gagne swept the first place votes, IIRC. The robbery was 2000 when Kent won the MVP over Bonds if you want to complain about a year.

It's worth a try
Every single stat with the exception of wins, walks and pitches per start favors Lincecum. With the exception of WHIP, most of them aren’t even close. But I’m not holding out much hope that Timmy will overcome the voters.
I’m very curious what the writers in LA, Colorado and San Diego are going to do.

Please. There is no writer more egotistical that a sportswriter. Barraging them in this manner can only embolden them to go against the your numbers out of big headed spite. The clubs know how to play these people, let them do it.

I feel the need to once again stick up for my choice in profession and say I had a huge ego before I got into sportswriting. In my personal experience, other sportswriters are jerks yes. But for my money there is no writer more full of himself than a screenwriter. And I am experiencing that first hand in the hell that is my fall semester screenwriting class.
Anywho, satyricrash is right, about not pestering the writers in such a manner. If I got such an email or letter I’d get annoyed, frankly speaking. Telling someone why they should vote for whatever is rather invasive and rude.

Totally kosher.
Hey, they’re sports writers, not sports journalist.

I'm not worried about it
Timmy is the frontrunner right now. If he pitches as well the next six days as he has the rest of the year he will finish with 18 or 19 wins and lead the league in ERA and Ks. He has 2 CGs now, too. Webbs only real shot is if the Dbacks catch the Bums AND he is instrumental in this final week. I don’t see this happening.
by positiveuphemism on Sep 23, 2008 1:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Webb has wins and all, but Tim is almost a full point in ERA better than him. You could argue that .2 or even .5 is a negligable amount, but a whole friggin point definitely isn’t. And the K’s don’t hurt too much either. I think Timmy pretty much has this in the bag, unless the DBack make the playoffs, which they won’t. If they do, then we have something to worry about. And even then, Timmy’s 24. He’s got plenty of time to get started on those 20 he’s going to win in his career.

After Today Unfortunately Timmy Can Say Bye Bye Cy
It no longer matters what Lincecum or Webb do in their last starts of the year, Today’s blowup by Timmy guarentees the award for Brandon.

History is made......
I think that this is the first time I find myself in agreement with Rainman.
Timmy is done as far as the Cy Young is concerned. Boy, I’m sure glad that Bochy let him pitch 138 & 132 back to back. Hoo boy.

Last night does not damage Tim’s Cy chances.
Look at Webs lines form Aug 26, 31 & Sept 1. 21 runs in 13 &2/3 IP. Not exactly Cy Young material or showing "clutch " pressure handling skills.. Especially since that’s the same time frame the D Back fell out of first place. Webb May get the Cy Young but seriously if Tim threw a No No or perfect game Webb would still be getting the same voters.

Way I see it if it’s a thinking man’s voter they are very aware those line came in the last month of the season. If they are North East Coast homer or Jenkins Boner type their voting C.C. and not a damn thing will change their mind.

You Are Missing The Point
It is the gap in wins (now five and at best still 4) that has killed Timmy’s chances at a Cy Young. Timmy needed to get within 3 and he can no longer do so.

P.S. Not Saying I Agree
Just saying this is how the voters are going to see it.

I fear GRM is right. Wins are what’s really going to matter to the voters here. And this makes me want to kick them all in their reproductive organs.

I heard Bruce Jenkins say the other day that when he votes for the Hall, he doesn’t even look at the stats. He just uses his gut based on what he happens to remember from x years ago. He said similar, though not identical things, about how Cy Young voting should go, and how it often goes.
Yeah, these guys have highly qualified opinions.

Rainman: I don’t think you agree with it. I apologize if I wrote something that implies you do agree with Only Wins matter.
I am just saying last night does not matter to the "thinkers". To the non thinkers it never mattered because they wouldn’t vote that Tim’s way . I Said pretty much the same thing after Tim’s complete game shut out. The fervent Disbelievers will continue to disbelieve. So last night really didn’t change anything. Only a post season team might of changed those votes.
