Draft Position Update (again)
Seattle 57 98 .368
Washington 58 98 .372
San Diego 61 95 .391
Pittsburgh 65 91 .417
.......................................
Baltimore 67 87 .435
Atlanta 69 87 .442
Kansas City 70 86 .449
San Francisco 70 86 .449
Colorado 71 85 .455
Detroit 71 83 .461
Cincinnati 72 83 .465
.........
Oakland 74 81 .477
With 6-7 games to go for most teams, this is where everyone sits. I draw the line after Pitt, since it is highly unlikely SF would match Pitt's record. It is also highly unlikely that the Giants would match Oakland. Thus we are looking at a range between 5th and 11th.
Baltimore has been playing wretchedly, so the 5th spot also seems out of reach. With the Giants having played well lately, and Lincecum set to make two more starts, it seems likely the Giants will end up between 9 and 11.

Bummer. Let’s let Misch, Palmer, Threets, and Hennessey start the rest of the games – then we’d have a fighting chance.
your 2008 SF Giants: this isn’t totally insane, just really stupid

this stuff is so unimportant. The Giants’ picked tenth in 2006 and got the best player in the draft. They picked tenth again in 2007 and might have pulled it off again, although it’s way too early to tell. This year they picked fifth and once again got the Silver Spikes winner. I finally climbed aboard the “fire Sabean” bandwagon early this year, and now I have stepped back off. They probably don’t keep stats on this, (although Xanthan might have something), and the jury is still way out, but there’s a chance that the Giants picked the best player in the draft three years in a row, despite the fact that they haven’t had great draft position. I don’t know how much Sabean had to do with this, but if he gets fired, there’s a possibility that the people who told him to draft Lincecum, Bumgarner and Posey go with him, and I would hate to see that happen.

Well not quite
David Price is way ahead of MadBum; Price broke into the majors in his first pro season. MadBum might be way younger, but Price is still a better prospect. And also Tim Beckham might be as good as Posey. But I agree with you that our last few first round picks have been really good ones. It’s pretty crazy that our system was bone dry 2 years ago and now it’s in the top 5. And also draft position might matter somewhat in this draft because this year’s draft class looks a little weak outside of Strasberg and that SS guy.

Please review the top 15 of each of the last 10 or so drafts (or go as far back as you like), and note the the first 5 in those years. There is no question that one can find wonderful players later, but picks in the top 5 are consistently successful, and are the safest bets to be something. If you want a crack at the ‘safe’ and ‘high ceiling’ players, the higher the better.
So yes, draft position does matter. However I do not mind the lower draft position the giants are moving toward, since the recent winning has featured young players who will factor in the future: their success is worth it.

I'm not used to seeing Atlanta picking so early
The Braves traditionally favor regional players. Anyone think Donovan Tate?
It would be nice to draft as high as possible, but as we saw this year drafting early ain’t cheap. So perhaps a silver lining in drafting a little later but still within the top dozen is that we still get a good talent at a bit less than we spent this year. Of course we could also let it be known we are willing to shell out the big bucks for someone who drops, but I don’t think as many teams or players are going to take those bluffs anymore.

Compensation picks
If we were to sign a top tier free agent our pick needs to be in the top 10 to be protected does it not? This is why I’d like a top 10 pick, not because I particularly want a top tier free agent, but if we were to get one I would’t be happy about giving up a pick to do so.

yeah just imagine if they’d actually tried to draft people before 2006

Don’t forget that if we finish with the 10th worst record, we’ll actually get the No. 11 pick because the Nats didn’t sign Crow. They get compensation pick 9A or some such, essentially the 10th pick.
