Pablo Sandoval Shut Down!

I have a feeling that the Giants have actually put on their thinking caps and shut down Pablo Sandoval to protect the almighty rookie status so he can get Rookie Of the Year next year.  The guy must also be exhausted, he's destroyed three levels of competition: HighA, San Jose then Double A, Connecticut Defenders, and then the MLB with our beloved SF Giants.  Pablo has had 128 Plate apperances at this level and to qualify for Rookie status, you need to have less than 130.  Personally i think this is a great idea in many respects.

Star-divide

Another thing I wanted to talk about was how Pablo managed to do what he did?  What is it about his swing and approach that makes him so good? How does he strike out so little?  How can he hit just about anything six inches away fromm the zone? What adjustments did he make from last year?

Here's my guess:  Bat speed, batting eye, level swing thorugh the zone, staying back on breaking pitches (which is probably the pitch he like to hit most), and simply the sheer power of his stroke.

What do you guys think?

Is he shut down?

I know he’s out with a quad strain but Kruk and Kuip said he’ll get more ABs this year. I don’t know what Amy G. said in her litle cut away (which I think was about him) but I would tend to agree with Kruk and Kuip.

Didn’t we establish in a gameday thread conversation that ABs in September don’t count against rookie status?

Care of MLB.com
Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

So, unless I’m reading it wrong, September service time doesn’t count against the 45 day limit, but the at bats in September do count.

Also, I’m wondering if the 130 “at bat” limit is a really a 130 “plate appearance” limit. It’s a pretty common mistake, and plate appearances make alot more sense in the official context of determining award eligibility. If so, Pablo has already exhausted his rookie status (he has 137 PA’s).

I believe that Pablo is just hurt and not being shut down for the year. The idea of shutting a player down for the sake of ROY eligibility is absurd. Pablito has obviously figured something out this year and more ML ABs can only help, not hurt. If you shut Pablo down so he can participate in winter league ball completely healthy, then I am all for it. I believe you are right and Pablo is no longer ROY eligible, which means that Pablo is likely out until he is healthy.

He has a sore quad and is available for pinch-hitting, I think.

lol
How do you swing level when you’re swinging at something around your chin? Your shoetops?

No , I’m NOT arguing with success.

After seeing him pull up lame on his pinch hit double tonight, maybe shutting him down isn’t such a bad idea

If the Giants happen to have shut Sandoval down to keep him eligible for ROY status, I would suggest that they are putting way too much stock in individual awards these days. Between that and the overworking of Lincecum for a Cy Young award, I think they are taking it too far. I like individual awards, but only if they are the result of reasonable usage of someone. I do not agree with unwise usage of players for the sole purpose of getting them an award. I get joy from winning games, not hearing that a player won an award a few weeks after the regular season has ended.

It’s like they figure that in the absence of a winning squad, individual awards = ticket sales.

putting way too much stock in individual awards

Brilliant deduction from just two data points, and on that basis predictably wrong.

Aaron Rowand released!

Hey guys, you think we should release Aaron Rowand?

by boonitez on Sep 21, 2008 12:43 AM PDT reply actions

No

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

Move him to the bullpen

Maybe he’ll get pissed off and go to the Dominican Republic, w/o pay of course.

No

But when we’re holding him by his ankles above the shark tank he doesn’t need to know we won’t.

Regrease Rowand? Why?
No I don’t want to know who or how some one applied grease to him in the first place. Lets just walk way form this very slowly and quietly please.

the whole point after u are eliminated from a playoff race is to get more ab’s for your young guys or more innings for your pitchers and develop them, not to shut them down in order to get awards…

according to the Giants’ he’ll be back in the lineup tomorrow. So much for that theory.
