2010 Giants the next 1991 Braves
I have been a fan of the Atlanta Braves since 1966.The good seasons were few and far between before 1991. The past three years I have attended every Augusta Greenjacket home game and have become more interested in the Giants as the players I watch move up the ladder. We have been very fortunate to have had the best minor league full-season record the past three years.
I have been reading the posts at Mccovey Chronicles for over a year and find it very entertaining and educational as far as learning more about the players in SF and at the upper levels. Combining my personal observances here in Augusta and what I read at MC takes me back in time to the 1989 Atlanta Braves. If memory serves me correct, they were an aging team that traded off their big slugger (Dale Murphy)at the end of the year. Their minor league system was loaded with young pitchers and a some potential hitters. Smoltz and Glavine were already in the majors, struggling at times but showing they were the future. In 1991 the pieces all came together. Steve Avery arrived, Glavine became the ace of the team and Smoltz got it together the second half. They had brought in a few free agents to augment the team, most notably Terry Pendleton, who provided leadership along with his rejuvenated bat.(The previous year he hit less thatn .250)
I feel like the Giants are further along than the Braves of 1989.The addition of one or two of the young pitchers coming up,throw in a couple of your hitting prospects and maybe sprinkle in a free-agent or two where needed: All the ingredients are there to get back to the top. I am very impressed with the progress of Villalona. He has impressive power and moves well in the field.Nick Noonan may not be that far away either as he just looks like a major leaguer.Bumgarner has been insane. The past few weeks Barnes has been almost as impressive. I could name a half dozen other players who might be making a name for themselves before long that are playing here in Augusta.Heck,Ryan Rohlinger,Brian Bocock and Emmanuel Burriss were here on the Greenjackets last year. Pablo was here in 2006.
As an outsider looking in,the future looks very bright for the Giants. And the future may not be as far off as you think.

thanks
have you been able to spot any noticeable changes in villalona when he bats to help explain his great past month? for example, better pitch recognition?

Villa
Much better pitch recognition. Making good contact more often. The ball flys off his bat. One game winning HR may have gone 450 feet. We couldnt find the ball as there is a lake nearby. He seems to be a very intense but likable young man. When the Greenjackets won the second half title he was the first to hug the winning pitcher. The difference between April and August is striking. (As in striking the ball, not striking out) The Augusta ballpark is far from a homerun hitters paradise. I do not know exactly, but it seems he has at least 7 Augusta HR’s,17 total.

Yup, he has 9 Augusta HR’s, and 8 on the road.

lyle, I like your musical references real often. Thought that song was Bonnie Raitt, but google corrected me. Emmy Lou is one of the few country acts I know or like. I’m gonna go look for some Robert Earl Keen.

Emmylou is a terrifc duet artist, as well as a solo act. Check out “Only The Heart May Know” by her and Dan Fogelberg.

Or pretty much anything on GP and Grievous Angel, Gram Parsons two solo albums post-Byrds and Flying Burrito Bros., and any of the live recordings and bootlegs from the Fallen Angels tour. (some folks think Gram discovered Emmylou, but it was actually Chris Hillman who saw her and recommended her to Gram, after considering inviting her to join the Burrito Bros to replace Parsons. He did however, really introduce her to the history of country music and was admittedly the greatest musical influence of her life, and possibly the most important emotional one).

Go to the game tonight?
Did that interference call on Neal seem as bad as it sounded?

From behind GJ dugout it looked like a bad call
It appeared that Thomas Neal barely moved into the line of catcher,if at all. At least from my vantage point. You should have seen Angel hustling during the sequence in that inning. He beat out an infield hit, diving into first base. Then,he was going on 3-2 pitch. The throw went into cf as he was sliding into second. He quickly got up,took off for third, and beat throw on close play. He seems to be quite a competitor that is hungry to win.

Concerning Braves Playoff Run
After missing the playoffs the last two years, maybe the excellence of the playoff run can be appreciated by Atlanta fans. It sure is more fun to be competing for the title than playing out the string in September. Also,I believe the knock on playoff futility is a bit overdone. If you figure the odds are 8-1 against you to be World Series Champion AFTER you make the playoffs,it doesnt look as bad. It could have been better but IF they win the next time in the playoffs, they will beat the odds. 15-2 vs 8-1 Unfortunately for the Braves, teams like the Marlins and the Yankees blasted the odds, winning more than their fair share.
