OT: Thoughts on hazing

There has been an awful lot of run on the "playful" side of rookie hazing in the last few days and a lot of it has centered on the Padres.  Living in San Diego, this hasn't been the first time the topic has come up in relation to the team this season.  Former players like Phil Nevin almost gloat about the nature of hazing and recall tales of a certain HOF-worthy reliever setting a rookies clothes on fire in a trash can for turning the radio to a different station.  Given I'm not a very politically correct person, but when I was a senior in high school there was an incident on-campus that involved a freshman baseball player, some sophomores, a baseball bat and some lubricant.  Suffice to say, all these years later I'd expect the tone and nature of hazing to be addressed by Major League Baseball in some way since it is my belief there is a huge trickle down effect of, "Hey isn't that cool...how can we top that?" in a lot of locker rooms throughout the nation, with the intention of malicious intent on younger players.

Every hazing story reminds me that there is a difference between humility and humiliation.  If I have one pet peeve, it's that we support this type of behavior and ask how the next henous hazing incident happens at a school or in a recreational league.  If we clap our hands for one, are we not enabling another?  I don't want to come across as holier than thou, but I guess I have a hang-up concerning this topic.

Hazing is one of those things that’s always been around when you get a group of dudes in a group and send them off to war, play ball, etc. It’s something that’s never going to go away, no-matter how hard you try and regulate it. Now granted, there’s always a bunch of shitheads out there, ruining a good time by taking things over the line. I seem to remember some high school/college girls getting some national publicity for some stunt they pulled on fellow teammates a while back. Can’t for the life of me remember any more of the specifics than that.

I can say this…as a guy that’s been on both ends of the hazing equation more times than you could count (three sport jock in HS, fraternity in college, and a father who was in the fire service..yes it happens there too) I’ve seen just about the whole range of ‘experiments’ …sometime the line is crossed and when that happens, NOBODY gets a rise out of it, that’s a fact. Really, a little bit of common sense goes a real long way here and as long as no lasting physical harm is inflicted on anyone, just about anything could be considered acceptable I would imagine. Bumps and bruises, those will heal up with time…that vicious hangover and all the magic marker on your face from the bitchy sorority girls…that’ll go away eventually…harmless pranks that involve fire, some clothes, and someone having to walk naked from point A to point B…the clothes can easily be replaced and who hasn’t been embarrassed in front of the opposite sex before?

I guess what I’m getting at is that hazing will always be prevalent in situations where the fostering of brother/sisterhood is necessary. MLB, a school district, or anyone else for that matter, shouldn’t have any sort of authority or voice in the matter, so long as you’ve got some reasoning and right-thinking individuals either being hazed or doing the hazing. Now we all know that a few bad apples can spoil the bunch, but it’s unreasonable to assume that any organization could keep things safer than a few people who know what’s right and wrong and are willing to call out their buddies if that mythical line is being crossed.

P.S. It goes without saying that this “mythical line” I speak of is different in every case. Back in the HS sports days, anything more than a bruise or bloody nose was a big no-no. In college, I was told that the fraternity, “Doesn’t believe in hazing”, but I’ll be damned if a pretty girl can do all kinds of stuff to a dude that’s ‘bout ready to blackout from the booze that’s been poured down his gullet. As for the fire department stuff…I’m sure some of that stuff has changed recently with the introduction of women into the profession. Needless to say alot of the stuff I remember seeing as a little kid wouldn’t ever be attempted nowadays.

In the future, the owners will realize that they have not squeezed every last hard earned drop out of fans and start pimping out these rook hazing traditions with “special edition” caps, tee-shirts, and French maid outfits that fans can “show their pride” by wearing at home. You know the Colorado Rockies are chomping at the bit to use Purple Haze.

Hazing, Chinese foot-binding, water-boarding, and “female circumcision” are all attempts by bullies to exert power over other human beings. There is no justification for enlightened people to engage in or tolerate such actions.

There’s a pretty big difference between hazing and raping someone with a baseball bat. Hazing can be fun, sometimes even rewarding, if done correctly.

Crap I basically said what you said below. Forgive me I just woke up.

Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

I'm gonna bite on the "rewarding" aspect ('Splain please?)

because someone FAILed to use flavored lube on the bat.

OT – I roll my Limewire acquisitions as a continuous shuffle , and as I type this I’m getting Rush’s “Free Will” , which is both sweet!…and ironic.

I don’t think he was implying in any way that the baseball bat scenario is rewarding for anybody. He said hazing itself can be rewarding, and also more or less explicitly said that the baseball bat scenario is not hazing.

I was just funnin’ with the bat but I’m genuinely interested in hearing more on his philosophy that hazing can be a rewarding experience – and for whom , the hazer or the hazed?

For example, when I joined a frat one of the hazings I had was great. Four of the actives were going to play a round of golf. They grabbed four of us pledges to be caddies. While we had to carry their clubs around all day, it boiled down to drinking beer and getting to know some new people. We knew that we were the subordinates, but it wasn’t cruel and it wasn’t dangerous.

You might not consider that hazing, and our frat was certainly tame in that regard compared to many others, but I thought it was a good way to maintain hierarchy while still rewarding the pledges.

That last line should read, “while still FEELING rewarding TO the pledges.”

It made you want to be a part of the group, instead of just thinking they’re a bunch of Napoleonic douchebags (of which there were plenty).

I think there’s a big difference between making Pablo Sandoval put on a frilly petticoat and that one guy who died after drinking copious amounts of water and the pushups and all that, as part of a fraternity hazing thing. When it crosses over into dangerous/violent behavior then I have a problem with it.

I never understood it myself. I played sports in high school and college and never experienced any hazing. In college I think people pretty much figured that if you survived the practices, you “belonged.”

I played water polo in HS and I didn’t experience any hazing either. All the other girls on the team just refused to talk to me and then spread rumors about me being a lesbian. But that’s catty female shit, not necessarily hazing.

Question…does it happen as often as with male sports from your perspective?

Reason I ask is because most of the female teams I’ve ever been around seemed to have done it. I assumed it was something that happened with some sort of regularity. Maybe not as much as the boys…but still more common than not?

I played baseball throughout, although i’m not going to play in college and I gotta say, there was never any hazing at all, and i was a sophmore on varsity. All that would happen was me getting shit for being behind on laps or something, which isn’t really hazing and continued throughout high school.

on a side note, i’m a wee bit worried as I’m maybe becoming a pledge next week.

I can’t say either way. My only experience was the HS polo team, and two years on a girls’ club-like softball team when I was a preteen. I didn’t experience hazing in either situation. I would assume it happens more in male sports, or perhaps it’s just not reported in women’s sports. Though I wouldn’t want to mess with other women like that. They’re flat out evil.

Slo below mentions pledging to a fraternity next week. I was looking at academic/service sororities at San Jose State and hoping that they don’t do the asinine hazing crap in those. Yes I’m a geek, but I’m a geek who wants to get paid. Perhaps putting Lamba Theta Alpha on my resume would get me ahead in some places. LTA being the first sorority established for Latinas and still focuses on academic excellence.

I never did the sorority thing when I was in school. Then again back in those dinosaur days the only sorority on campus was the tri-sigs, and they had a reputation I wanted no part of.

by Merope on Sep 20, 2008 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I told my mother I was thinking of LTA and she was all OMG NO YOU’LL BE ON GIRLS ON WILD.

Seriously though I am hoping the academic and service sororities are set apart from the social orgs where they do all that and I can just be in my academic bubble and do my nerdy thing. Because I don’t want to get involved in that, either. Besides I’m already old and I’ve gotten all the insane partying crap out of my system. Now I just have a few drinks and I pass out on the floor. Damn kids.

As SJSU alumni, let me tell you the greek world there is LAME.

And no, I wasn’t some nerdy reject – I was friends with plenty of that crowd.

But the social clickyness of the Greek situation at SJSU always made me laugh.

I didn’t join any groups on campus, and all I had to put on my resume was BSME.

Worked out alright…

The only problem with being talented and having varied interests is not having enough time to do it all. Band, model UN, newspaper, the sorority stuff (if it doesn’t suck)…when TF do I go to class?

You got a good head on your shoulders and from the little bit you’ve said about it, this LTA sounds like a great group to be a part of. There’s a HUGE difference between the ‘social’ Greek fraternity/sorority scene and all of the other ‘academic’ ones when it comes to hazing, the ritual side of things, and the rampant alcoholism as well.

All this being said, LEAVING the fraternity (I was in one of the ‘social’ ones) was the best decision I made in all of my college years. I joined for all the wrong reasons and once I became a borderline alkie, being around a bunch of enablers was the worst thing for me at the time.

Funny how after I left the fraternity the drinks were put down, the grades went up, and I became a better dude because of it. To this day I don’t talk to a single one of those jack-holes.

The whole concept of hazing, and why it’s supposed to be fun or useful or a good idea, has always been extremely baffling to me.

Maybe this is one reason why I’m a nerd, though.
