The Ultimate Matt Cain Trade Proposal

It's been pretty chic around here lately, so I thought I'd give it a try. If everyone hates this post like pretty much all the previous "Trade Matt Cain" posts, then here's a good hijack topic: The best beer in the world comes from (insert opinion here).

Star-divide

"The San Francisco Giants trade pitcher Matt Cain to...."

"....the New York Yankees...."

".....for...."

".....ONE...."

".....BILLION...."

"...DOLLARS."

Awesome, eh?

Unrealistic you say? Well, so are most of the other fanposts.

Maybe my main point is SABEAN SHOULD NOT TRADE CAIN UNLESS HE GETS A BLOW-YOU-OUTTA-THE-WATER-WITH-TWENTY-POUNDS-OF-C4 kind of deal...

And none of us should want anything less than that.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

And your hijack doesn’t work here either because the answer is the Northeast of England. And I’m more than qualified on the subject…just look at my name.

the latest round of rumors has Cain going to Milwaukee for Prince Fielder and JJ Hardy. I’m a big Cain fan, but I really think you have to do that if you’re the Giants. Assuming they find a decent replacement for Cain, a trade like that makes you an instant contender in the NL West, and Fielder and Hardy are 24 and 26 respectively.

Assuming they find a decent replacement for Cain

This is a massive assumption.

Get CC

Bengie, Pablo, Prince, and CC playing for the Giants. If I was funny, I’d make a joke about this, because it has potential.

I’d do that for those two. Have fielder for a year or two and then trade him for the kitchen sink so Anvil can come rake up here.

by Big Daddy J on Sep 19, 2008 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Was this really a round of rumors, though? I thought it was one rumor, and not even quite a rumor at that. More of a “one guy speculates that a trade might be possible sometime in the future.” I can’t even remotely find Gammons’ quote on that (the googles do nothing!), and everywhere else I see it is all like “Gammons said [blah] and might not even have a source.”

I don’t know if this whole rumor thing is as flimsy as it all seems to be to me based on what limited amount I know or could find… but it seems a little flimsy.

Baggarly mentioned this as well in the Merc and he said that it’s a rumor that has been “floating around.” I don’t know where Gammons got it, but I would guess the source of these rumors isn’t very solid. It’s probably just something someone thought up because the Brewers are losing their best two starters to free agency, and the Giants are desperate for a big bat.

I would do that trade in two seconds, and the Brewers would not.

by Grant on Sep 19, 2008 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

That trade singlehandedly makes offering Sabathia a contract a good idea.

It also makes the Giants instant favorites in the NL west.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Sep 19, 2008 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with CC is that he’s going to make more than Zito money. How many 100 million contracts can you have?? Lincecum is eventually going to get that too, and you can only hope that the kids we have now develop into expensive players in the future. The payroll would be astronomical though. You want to keep Fielder?? 100 million. Pablo, AnVil and Posey?? 100 million apiece. I think a good idea here would be to forget about CC and take a run at Sheets. His injury history forces his price way down. He may even take a short term deal to reestablish his top of the line value.

Say what?

You think it should be part of the Giants strategy to go after more starting pitchers? I can’t think of a lower priority for this team.

How?

How would trading Matt Cain for Prince Fielder make the Giants instant favorites in the 2009 NL West? I love the deal, but I doubt it would make them even a .500 team next season without some other complementary moves.

by sharksrog on Sep 20, 2008 11:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

I agree that chances are that the Brewers would not do this deal. If I had to look at it from the “Why would the Brewers do this?” standpoint I would figure that:

1. Escobar- is replacing Hardy for cheap
2. Fielder is unhappy and will require many dollars to stay and can be replaced by Gamel or Braun
3. Brewers need pitching and one more real pitcher may make them competitive. Cain, Gallardo, Parra, Supan and [other guy] would not be a bad rotation.
4. They may be thinking that if this current incarnation of the Brewers cannot make the playoffs this year then they might not ever make it.

Like Grant, I would do this trade in a second but I also see reasons why it might happen.

by camwoody on Sep 19, 2008 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Could you imagine a Winn/Lewis/Hardy/Fielder/Sandoval/Rowand/Molina/Frandsen? And then our rotation would be Lincecum…Sanchez…uh…that one guy…and…uh….

…$130M for Sabathia? I don’t see why not….

and…uh…Zito….

Never mind. I’d probably just prefer to watch Cain.

by Grant on Sep 19, 2008 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That line up looks nice.

I could watch those guys bat.
That rotation needs help but I see it two ways:

Stand pat (which I am fine with) and have two maybe three really good starters on a team that might score runs for them in 2010.

or

Pull this trade off and have three maybe four really good bats and a rotation that might be back on its feet by 2010.

Yeah maybe watching Cain is better.

Brewers

with yet another collapse by the Brewers they may be looking to blow it up a little bit anyway. And seeing as they have young, cheap replacements for Hardy and Fielder I don’t see why they wouldn’t try to trade for someone like Cain. And if they can’t retain CC or Sheets, I could see them making a run at AJ Burnett.

by Hobbes2d on Sep 19, 2008 6:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the problem is that if the Brewers don’t make the playoffs, they probably fire Doug Melvin. And if this trade was ever realistically discussed between Sabean and Melvin, the new GM would have a different idea on how to improve the team.
