Maybe.

But I think it’s pretty safe to say that science proves that the earth is more than 4,000 years old.

Would you disagree with that?

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

by delorean on Sep 19, 2008 11:58 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

can't agree or disagree

Have always hated science, ever since I was a kid, and I definitely don’t know enough to say either way.

A quick Google search landed me on an archealogy site where a writer claimed carbon dating is very difficult and inaccurate when you’re talking about over a couple thousand years. Of course, he could just be talking out of his ass but it seemed like a valid opinion.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

by delorean on Sep 19, 2008 12:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

maybe not < 4,000

but I don’t believe that it’s millions/billions/trillions of years old, as many claim. don’t ask me to substantiate it, because much of it deals with my faith, which I refuse to argue on a baseball blog. Plus, like I said, I don’t know enough about science to make any kind of argument with you.

my problem with your stance

and not just yours, but many like it I see, is that just because you haven’t done enough research into something to verify whether or not it’s true doesn’t mean that it might be true and it might not. Others have done the research, and the near universal conclusion, heavily supported by tons of evidence is that the earth is billions/trillions of years old. Whether you agree with them or not doesn’t really matter to me, but if you’re not going to put even a modicum of effort in to support your position, just avoid bringing it up entirely.

by Viliphied on Sep 19, 2008 12:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The reason I don't support my position is twofold

1) I don’t know enough about science to be involved with a worthwhile debate.

2) People here don’t want to hear about my faith, at least that’s an unspoken rule, at least that’s what I’m aware of.

I didn’t mean to support either position, I was just trying to ask why he held his position. And as it turns out, he was joking, so I’m ready to let this go.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

by SF Pete on Sep 19, 2008 12:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

even most young-earth ‘creation scientists’ don’t think it is 4k, they think it is 6 to 100kish if they give an exact number.

But yes, in the exact sense we don’t ‘know’ how old the earth is. However, the evidence we do have overwhelming suggest it is quite a bit older than that.

Carbon dating does so (even with its limitations and problems)

Even tree rings do, as well as basic consideration of the geological record.

The fossil record is a mess, but even cautious looks at it suggest a considerably longer amount of time.

Now, this doesn’t mean that the extremely large number speculations one encounters are true—think trillions, high billions—(though they haven’t been disproved, either) as such are extremely speculative, but virtually all the evidence coheres to indicate at least multiple hundreds of thousands of years, on up.

science.

again.

If the earth were that young, physics, paleontology, geography, chemistry, anthropology and biology at the very least would all have to have some pretty big flaws in some basic assumptions.

by Viliphied on Sep 19, 2008 12:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm no logic/reason expert

but in what universe is “there would be big flaws in basic assumptions” evidence or proof of something? it’s an implication, yes.

Look, I’m not trying to argue one way or the other. All I asked PacBellBoozer was why he thought she was full of crap.
