can't agree or disagree

Have always hated science, ever since I was a kid, and I definitely don’t know enough to say either way.

A quick Google search landed me on an archealogy site where a writer claimed carbon dating is very difficult and inaccurate when you’re talking about over a couple thousand years. Of course, he could just be talking out of his ass but it seemed like a valid opinion.

maybe not < 4,000

but I don’t believe that it’s millions/billions/trillions of years old, as many claim. don’t ask me to substantiate it, because much of it deals with my faith, which I refuse to argue on a baseball blog. Plus, like I said, I don’t know enough about science to make any kind of argument with you.

by UnleashTheGore on Sep 19, 2008 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

my problem with your stance

and not just yours, but many like it I see, is that just because you haven’t done enough research into something to verify whether or not it’s true doesn’t mean that it might be true and it might not. Others have done the research, and the near universal conclusion, heavily supported by tons of evidence is that the earth is billions/trillions of years old. Whether you agree with them or not doesn’t really matter to me, but if you’re not going to put even a modicum of effort in to support your position, just avoid bringing it up entirely.

by Viliphied on Sep 19, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

The reason I don't support my position is twofold

1) I don’t know enough about science to be involved with a worthwhile debate.

2) People here don’t want to hear about my faith, at least that’s an unspoken rule, at least that’s what I’m aware of.

I didn’t mean to support either position, I was just trying to ask why he held his position. And as it turns out, he was joking, so I’m ready to let this go.

even most young-earth ‘creation scientists’ don’t think it is 4k, they think it is 6 to 100kish if they give an exact number.

But yes, in the exact sense we don’t ‘know’ how old the earth is. However, the evidence we do have overwhelming suggest it is quite a bit older than that.

Carbon dating does so (even with its limitations and problems)

Even tree rings do, as well as basic consideration of the geological record.

The fossil record is a mess, but even cautious looks at it suggest a considerably longer amount of time.

Now, this doesn’t mean that the extremely large number speculations one encounters are true—think trillions, high billions—(though they haven’t been disproved, either) as such are extremely speculative, but virtually all the evidence coheres to indicate at least multiple hundreds of thousands of years, on up.

If the earth were that young, physics, paleontology, geography, chemistry, anthropology and biology at the very least would all have to have some pretty big flaws in some basic assumptions.

…suddenly write off millions of people’s faith seems pretty pretentious to me…

So let’s get philosophical then why don’t we.

Is it possible to believe that dinosaurs roamed the planet more than just a few thousand years ago, AND also live a life based on the Christian faith? Because the minute you tell me that those thoughts are mutually exclusive of each other…well ya…you see where I’m going here?!?

I guess what I’m getting at, is that while I might of made an inappropriate generalization about the religious beliefs of one person, you have also made an inappropriate generalization by assuming that I must either be a man of science or of the cloth, and that I can’t live my life by adopting a bit of them both!

The presidential decision is not the only one on the ballot.

by Lars The Wanderer on Sep 19, 2008 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

The point I was getting at is that it’s incredibly foolish of you to be gifted the right to vote and not do so, no matter your reasoning for it. If you don’t like either of the two major candidates, that’s fine by me…Nobody’s forcing you to choose the lesser of two evils if that’s how you see things. Write in a candidate if you’d like.

Just don’t throw your hands in the air and say that you’re not going to vote at all. Doing so would equate to a bitchslap across the face of all of the patriots who’ve fought hard so you have the right to vote.

by rotorueter on Sep 19, 2008 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

You guys misunderstand me, I will be voitng in my local elections senitor for instance. My decision not to vote for pres is not based on this false ( though photoshopped well to me) photo of the vp candidate. Im not voting for presidant because I dont support either candidate in this race and its a lose lose situation to me. I wont vote for either because I dont support either, but im not gonna turn around after the vote and bitch about who won since i didnt vote. This is purely my opinion and whether you feel the same or not does not matter this is baseball and I apologize for ruining the mood.

OK…on second thought, pick up a book instead…one without pictures in it, preferably. If you can’t spell, you certainly shouldn’t be voting either.

My apologies for typing to fast and not paying attention to what I was and was not spelling correctly. So yes I will vote for SENATOR (again sorry for not fine toothing my reply) but even if I were to write in a someone I feel would do a better job than my appointed choices I am still waisting MY vote in my humble opinion. So before you decied to be all jugemental about what someone wants to do with their vote and talk about it being a slap in the face of people that fight for our freedoms take a minute to realize that it is my vote do with as I please.

Ok Boozer you are right and I do need to exercise my rights as a citizen of the USA and one of those rights is to vote and I plan to. My point\joke about the picture above was that that woman does have chance to be in the vp seat come november, and that is scary to me but in my opinion the alternative is not all that much better. And yes my spelling and grammar can be shotty at best sometimes, but im not a walking dictionary and no one will ever accuse me of being the best writer in the world. But hey the Giants won last night and not only won but kicked the crap out of LA so lets be happy about that (oh and Pablito had a couple hits and rsbi)!

I’d rather we won every single game. I hate watching them lose. I’d hate more watching the bums celebrate on our turf…even though I wouldn’t watch…it’s the knowing.

I live down here and listen to sports talk because I’m a sports fan and I have to drive everywhere and they are obnoxious as hell when it comes to the Giants. I already have to deal w/ them gloating about ManRam all the time. Them winning in SF would be unbearable. I’d just rather get it over with ASAP so I can revel in their playoff ousting.

Rally civil disobidience cat

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

OK, good job, everyone. I’ll see y’all in tomorrow’s rally thread.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

Great thread, with the exception of the bizarre politics/religion threads.

by all means, keep Bengie, but don’t give him a new contract, like he was asking for the other day. And make the lineup good enough so the idiot manager has no reason to bat him fourth.
