POLL: Favorite Nickname of '08

I was kicking this around for the past few days, and with as many good nicknames as have been kicked around this year, why not vote on them? I mainly stuck with more recent names, and I'm sure 7 options isn't nearly enough, but let me know if there is a big one I am missing. I have cracked up over the various nicknames for Velez this season, so I'm not making it a secret which one i'm picking.

EDIT: Big Panda and The Freak added by popular demand.

Who came up with that one? I want to delete the original post, and edit a post from June to put that nickname in. Then the historians will assume I made it up, which would be swell.

I think the first place I saw it was in a merope post, but I can’t be 100% sure.

I think it started evolving from a post on the August 31st game day thread

We also call Pablo “Pablerón” an augmentative suffix in Spanish for big things is “ón” – and Mr Merope likes it ’cause it rhymes with Toblerone.

Don’t forget “The Freak” for Lincecum as well. That’s certainly the nickname that has caught on outside of San Francisco. Some casual Met fan that I know doesn’t even know his name, but she always asks me how The Freak is doing after that SI article. Probably the best and most accurate nickname on the Giants is The Albatross for Barry Zito.

While there are

glimmers of hope regarding Velez, he continues to FAIL OR FLAIL at the most inopportune times.

I find it increasingly difficult to support anything about Velez at this point. He has almost reached the ranks of Blownetiz. Please send him away before he makes my head explode :-)

Nice but painful ’shop.

Eugenio has to blame Lincecum for allowing Upton to hit that ball before I start to hate him. Till then I’ll just blame Bochy for putting him out there and Sabean as well, because I heard his show yesterday and he knew Bochy was going to do this.

Yeah seriously, it was a costly play but its still one play. He’s gotten better and I still want to see him coming off the bench next year. BTW Errant Throwin and Fast Black Abraham Lincoln are the two best nicknames of the year with Juggernate getting an honorable mention.

by BrianBokake on Sep 19, 2008 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not just one play, though. Serious defensive miscues have been a pattern for Velez all season long. I don’t think anybody was surprised that he missed a ball on defense. THAT’S WHAT HE DOES.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Maybe its just me.

There are times were Velez strikes me as very LeMaster – esque. But with less hype. Then there are moments were Zorak comes through and the confusion is delicious.

I voted for Sanchez’s “dirty” and “El Guapo”
I also love Juggernate, though, and am a HUGE fan of the panda related nicknames for pablo (although I’ve seen several versions: big panda, kung fu panda, attack panda)

For Timmy, I don’t like the Freak. Enchanter is ok, and that’s what people seem to use here. I actually kind of liked Seabiscuit, but that seems to have disappeared completely.

I would have voted for “Errant Throw In” though if it had been on the list. In fact you should redo this entire post and add “Errant Throw In” to the poll. It would win in a landslide.
