The Giants held a summit and decided Tim Lincecum will make two more starts instead of one after tonight’s outing against Arizona’s Randy Johnson.
That plan wouldn’t change even if Lincecum fails to win No. 18 tonight, which would end any chance of being the Giants’ first 20-game winner since 1993.
Lincecum will start on regular rest Tuesday and start the season finale against the Dodgers on Sept. 28. Bochy acknowledged the move was motivated in part to end the season on a solid note — something that could make a difference for season-ticket holders on the fence about renewing.
Limcecum is bound to lead the NL in pitches thrown, but Bochy said the Giants wouldn’t be doing this if they had any concerns about his arm. The summit included Bochy, GM Brian Sabean and trainer Dave Groeschner.
Bochy did say he plans to limit Lincecum’s pitch count in light of the career-high 138 he threw in his last start.
In other news, the Giants cleared two spots on the 40-man roster by designating Brian Horwitz and Matt Palmer. Bochy said they could use the space to activate right-hander Merkin Valdez from the 60-day DL, and possibly Kevin Frandsen, too. Noah Lowry was ruled out as a possibility, however.
Merkin has a simulated game planned for tomorrow and will throw in the instructional league opener on the 22nd. He’ll rejoin the club if it goes well.

So that puts Timmay’s limit at 130 pitches then? That is unless we’re stuck in a 0-0 extra innings affair…To hell with his arm, ol Buckethead! Dude should be just fine pitching 16 innings of a 0-0 game.

We don’t know the limit of the pitch count. But it seems 118 pitches was a-okay.
Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.

I really hope that note about ending the season on a high note is incorrect. The notion that a season ticket holder would base their decision of whether to renew on the final game of a 162 game schedule is ridiculous, and the idea that the team should strategize for that contingency is idiotic.
I’m not 100% sure giving Lincecum one more start is a terrible idea, but that’s definitely a terrible reason to do it.

sigh...
I guess we should have seen this coming, but I somehow convinced myself that even the Giants aren’t that fucking stupid.

Wahhh! Wahhh!
What a bunch of cry babies. It is the right decision. It ain’t about season ticket holders (this was Baggs thinking not what Boch said) it is about helping the team believe in themselves more and trying to build momentum for next year. It is also about doing everything possible to help Timmy win the Cy Young.

“doing everything possible to help Timmy win the Cy Young” and “starting Eugenio Velez in left” is like putting your feet on the accelerator and the brakes simultaneously.

Left Field Is Where One Usually Puts The Weakest Defensive Player
It was just bad luck that the he had to try and handle such a tough play. A Ball hit right at you is the hardest to judge as to how far it is going to go. Yes, a better outfielder catches that ball. But it wasn’t the only missed ball hit to the outfield that should have been caught. Rowand should have caught Drew’s double and he too misplayed it by first breaking and and they scrambling back. In Rowand’s case the ball wasn’t even hit right at him it was hit to his right.
Velez was in the lineup for his righthanded bat. All the other outfield choices hit left handed and Boch was trying to give Timmy as much offensive support as possible.

P.S.
I strongly suspect that Schierholtz was still unavailabe and therefore only Roberts and Bowker would have been options and they both are just flat ass bad against lefties.

Yeah but Velez is just flat ass bad.

not really
Roberts and Velez are essentially equal vs. LHP, and ROberts is a far better defender.
Bochy fucked up.

Mr. Giantsrainman, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

My gut feeling is that this is pointless & taking unnecessary risks. Also, i think this move is as likely to hurt his cy-young chances as improve it. If he performs well, then it’s obviously an extra good start, but i doubt that increases his chances. If he performs badly though, that may push him over the edge & cause him to lose votes.
Whilst i was annoyed at hearing this, it’s not the end of the world, it’s not as if he’s starting on short rest, so it’s not a huge issue. The fact that his pitch counts have been too high is much more likely to cause him trouble in my opinion.

/ stamped Agreed
At this point the NL Cy Young is Tim’s to lose. Those that would not vote him the winner pretty much will not do so no matter if he throws a perfect game and no no in those two starts. Are sure we can just leave Boulder Skull in L.A?

Actually It Has Retrurned To Webb Being Favored
In the eyes of the voters Webb’s extra 4 Wins inspite of his extra 3 loses and the fact that he is leading his team in a post season drive are worth more then Timmy’s statistical advantages. Timmy needs to close the Win gap and for the Dodgers to hold on and win the West. Timmy would have little chance to do the first without the extra start.
