OT: Apple killed the Music player.
I HATE the new itunes. I find the layout of songs by album far less intuitive than the previous versions. I also mourn the death of the shuffle feature which I have grown to love. Am I being a reactionary Luddite or does the new itunes truly suck?

I don’t use iTunes other than to move songs onto my Ipod Suffle.
As for a music player / library manager, I love Foobar. Super lightweight and easy to use.

Favorite GYBE album? Also, do you like A Silver Mt. Zion? I’m not into much post-rock because I think the majority of it is pretty boring, but GYBE and A Silver Mt. Zion are some of my favorites.

I should
like lift your skinny fists. But my absolute favorite is the “single” Slow Riot. Moya is just one of my favorite pieces of anything ever ever ever.
Lift your skinny fists is a very close second, but Slow Riot is just sublime. Other than Yanqui UXO, I absoutely adore everything GYBE does. (dead flag blues is a great song off their E.P.)
I’ve never given a Silver Mt. Zion as my long, orchestral indie phase passed pretty quickly. It pretty much went Mogwai, EITS, GYBE and then stopped. That was when i was super turned on to Built to Spill though, so i forgive myself.

Not yet, everything has installed fine. I’ve had problems with my virus scanner, AVG Free, but I mostly think it’s a problem with the newer version of the software and not the OS.

I haven’t upgraded yet.
I have to say, I’ve never understood why people hate iTunes so much. Though I’ve heard that it runs much much slower on PCs than it does on Macs.

I don’t hate it but it takes up a humongous amount of resources. I’ll open the process in the background and it’ll be sucking down 60-80megs of memory, for just a music player it’s crazy.

This
iTunes is a pretty big memory hog. Plus I like the customization other media players offer, where iTunes is pretty limited.
exactly what customization
is there to offer? I really can’t think of anything else I truly want my iTunes to do.

With foobar, I can customize the skin, layout, and other visual components. This probably is of no importance to you, but I like to have some control over the way my programs look.
Actually
that seems rather cool and if i didn’t have a mac, I’d consider using it. The problem with me, mostly, is laziness. Everything about itunes is simple to a sin level and it’s obnoxiously easy for it to link with my ipod and sync without me even telling it to. We’ll see about a possible foobar when i get back home to my desktop.

It’s all right for what I need it to do. When I was in my video editing classes I used iTunes to convert audio files to aiff format so I could dump them into Final Cut Pro. Plus it syncs up my iPod. Otherwise I use regular old Winamp for actually playing music on my lappy. The randomizer sucks on iTunes, which always drove me up the wall.
I haven’t yet upgraded either out of sheer laziness. I guess I made the right call.

you can still have the list view if you want
Shuffle version is still on the new itunes.
when you open itunes go to the view tab and set view as list.
To shuffle go to control tab and click the shuffle option by song and it will shuffle the whole library of music
good luck

Great for art and video editing programs. Cannot be beat for those things. Otherwise I consider them overpriced overhyped boxes of crap.

And if that’s pretty much all you do (ie, your job) than they are the opposite of “overpriced overhyped boxes of crap.”
My point exactly. Whenever I bring up “oh I’m thinking of getting a new laptop” and immediately eight people go HAY MAC. I point out (politely, I’m much nicer about this than I used to be) that I won’t be using it for video editing/art stuff, the same eight people go GET ONE ANYWAY. When I can get something for a lower price that works just fine, I will not GET A MAC ANYWAY just because the fanatic rabid cult told me to.
If I ever delve into video production seriously, I will get a powerful Mac laptop and Final Cut Pro, because FCP is amazing for video editing. It’s not on my list of Things I Must Do Before I Die. More like, Oh If I Ever Had the Money and a Real Reason To Do It list.

I use Macs because it another tool I use to create that provides me with a clearer path to allow me to create and get work done with little to no fuss. No “rabid cult” — I think evangelizing for any corporation is foolish —had to convince me of this, I needed only to use the tool for my own creative purposes. I find that my case is no dissimilar to any number of artists I continue to work with, in the fine and graphic arts, in music creation and production, in animated and live action music video and feature film production, the consensus among those of a creative mind seem to favor the Macintosh platform. I’m not saying that everyone should use Macs because of this, or that one group of users has “more important” work than others to do with their tools, this is just my perspective as an artist. Computer, get out of my way an let me work.
(And this is why I bristle when people refer to Macs as toys. If you’re going to only use them for looking at scantily clad pics of Judy Steffes in a churchyard, then whatever you use makes no difference.)
((I hate talking about this kind of shit. It’s really akin to talking politics nowadays, ain’t it.))
My stupid question about the new iTunes version:
In list view, when you use the Browser, there used to be an option to not show Genre. I can’t find it now. Anyone?
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
The first thing you need to do is quit iTunes. Then open up the Terminal and enter this command line:
defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE
Press return/enter.
The genre list window should be gone when you reload iTunes.
also,
you could click on view, scroll to view options and uncheck the box that says genre.

Maybe I misunderstood. To remove the genre list column in list view you go to the “View Options” menu. If you want to remove the genre browsing window, you’ll need to use the Terminal method.
...misunderstood your question*
If you ever want that window back after removing it, just change the “FALSE” at the end of the command line to “TRUE”.
Also, can I just say that Mac/PC debates are even more tiresome than MATT CAIN SUCKS!!!!! threads AND TRADE ROWAND!!!! threads combined.

Does anybody know of a good instant messaging program (AIM, Yahoo!)? I’m currently using Trillian. It works fine, but I’d like to give something else a try.
I use Pidgin, it’s open source and free. It’s like Trillian in that it can do AIM, Yahoo, MSN. It also uses much less resources than Trillian. In my opinion, Trillian was starting to get really bloated.
