Stretch Drive: Let's Finish Strong!
After winning 8 of their last 10, The Giants record is currently 68-81. With 13 games left, they've already assured themselves of avoiding 100 losses.
If they win just four more games, they'll beat last year's record of 71-91. If they win five more games, they'll avoid 90 losses. These seem well within reach.
Here's a more unbelievable goal that's within reach: If they go 9-4 in these final 13 games, they'll finish 77-85. What's so special about that? It would give them their best record since the 2004 season. Some will argure that that's clearing a low bar and nothing to write home about, but after the dire off-season predictions, I'd consider it an accomplishment that would give the team something to build on in 2009.
In addition, going 9-4 or better could conceivebly put them in 2nd place with the way the D-Backs are playing.
So I say, "To hell with improving our draft pick. Let's enjoy the final four series and root for the kids to finish strong!" If they go 9-4, I know I'll be dancing!

I’m almost literally on the fence.
This li’l run they’ve put together has been awesome to watch, but I don’t think it’s super-significant to post a better records than ‘04. As long as the kids keep playing, and the Giants go 6 and 0 vs. the Dodgers, I’ll be satisfied.

I'm hoping Karma works both ways
By playing honorably and competing until the final week of the season the Giants finish with their best record since 04. It knocks us down to the 11th pick in the draft, but that works to our favor when we take some toolsy high school SS or OF and that guy turns out to be the best player drafted.

It's all a crapshoot in the draft past #5 anyway.
And the return on investment there is so long term that really, I think winning more games now could be more advantageous for the team.
We are assuredly not going to be in the top 5, so who cares. #9 vs #11 or whatever isn’t a really big difference.
The better record we post this season, the more likely borderline players may be willing to play here. It also increases ticket sales and overall profit for the team, which translates into higher salary.
Winning is good. Rooting for your team to lose is really pretty fundamentally wrong, anyways.

Gotta disagree
We aren’t winning the NLWest, nor should we want to at this point in time. Even if we did, we’d lose abysmally in the playoffs, guaranteeing us nothing but a bad draft pick.
We ARE a bad team. We need a good draft pick in order to help fix that problem. I see that as the bottom line.
The Giants should be “DNR”: I don’t expect us to lose on purpose, but I don’t want any heroic measures taken to prolong our 2008 life. Play the kids, don’t do anything stupid like letting Lincecum throw more than 105 pitches (!), get Lewis that foot surgery, give Justin Hedrick a shot in the bullpen, and take whatever good draft pick we inevitably get next year.
Winning now is penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Sorry, if the Giants were in the hunt right now, I’d be pulling for them to win the divisions. People might mock “meaningful games” but it’s always more fun when your team has a chance.
As far as how they’d do in the post-season, sure they’d be underdogs, but I’d still like to see what Tim, Matt and Durt could do to another team in short series. No one expected the Rockies to do much last season and look what happened. That shiznit would be fun as hell.

Although, being less terrible than other terrible teams is not a cool accomplishment. It’s not an accomplishment at all. I really like watching the younger guys play and this late surge of beating bad teams has been fun. It gives the players and fans something to look forward to next season. That doesn’t mean this season didn’t suck.

beating bad teams
Let’s not forget that we pretty much knocked Arizona out of first place.
Over the next 13 games, 10 are against contenders. (AZ and LAD)
6 of those are against the current 1st place team in the division. (LAD)
If we can post a winning record in this upcoming 13 game stretch, I think that is a significant accomplishment.

beating the Dodgers the last weekend of the season won’t be quite so glorious if they’ve already clinched the division and therefore have nothing to play for. I’d love for the D-Backs to still be in the division race then so Torre has to risk tweaking his playoff rotation against us.

I didn't make a prediction for Winn
merely pointed out that he was bad, although I suppose one might misread me into saying Winn (already terrible) was going to get worse. I probably would have guessed he’d get somewhat better (but not as good as he has been). But I didn’t.
And I was not that far off on Molina too – dropped 10 pts. of BA and 60 points of SLG.
I hope I can be excused for not predicting the awesome power of Paul Stanley and Ishikawa…

The image shack code is bloated with fail-full filler. When the image is hosted online, it has its own URL, which will look like http://www.image.jpg (or .bmp or .gif or .png or whatever, depending on the image file). You can see this part existing in the mess of code you’ve been supplied with.
When you put the image shack code in here, delete everything except for the part that says < img src=“http://www.image.jpg” >
That’s the only piece you need, and ideally the only piece they would even give you. Eliminate the spaces to make it work.
Instead they give you a bunch of other crap, like target=“blank” (which is useful sometimes, but you really don’t need it) and alt=bunchofbullshit (which just is supposed to makes it a link that will get image shack inadvertent page hits!).
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I want them to spectacularly fail. CG loses. 4 hour long offense fests that end with Walker giving up a grand slam. Great individual performances that add up to a losing record, but provide great promise for the future (and a good draft pick).
Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.
