I don’t think it is common, but it has been done before. Andrew Miller with the Tigers in 2006 and Ross Detwiler with the Nationals last year are two examples that come to mind. I also read somewhere that Jim Bowden said that he offered the same deal to Aaron Crow this year, but of course, they never agreed on a contract.
