Overall I think this guy knows what he's doing. I haven't before seen the Giants hit consistently like this. I mean the Giants have really hit this year, although rookie mistakes (bad baserunning *Ishikawa*) and failure to get that one crucial hit has stopped them from scoring more often, I have to believe that Carney Lansford has done his job this year, for sure. I'd vote him best coach on the team, hands down.

I like Flannery because he makes me laugh with the way he waves runners in, but I dont know about how good of a coach he is....still wayy too many baserunning mistakes. Wotus has been steady with his work on the IF defense, I guess I might be taking his work a bit for granted.

It is funny to me how we can mention bad rookie base running in ’08 and not say Velez. Though I had to admit there is pleny of blame in that department to go arround.

It’s also funny how the team is 24-18 in Aug & Sept. You know the time frame they actauly started playing the kids.

To be fair...

…they played some of “the kids” quite a bit earlier in the season (Velez, Bocock, Burriss, and Bowker). Velez is looking much better since his return, but he was terrible early on. Bocock was nowhere near ready, Burriss picked it up toward the end before his injury, and Bowker started hot and slumped.

Sandoval, Ishikawa, and Schierholtz have all done well since their callups but you’ve also got to give credit to the hot streaks from Bengie Molina (OPS .825 since 8/1) and Randy Winn (.992 since 8/1).

Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

Ok. Lets be fair.

Bocock did not have killer spring to earn his way on to the squad and Skiped 3 levels of pro ball. If one wants to claim playing him was youth movement one has to acknowledge it setting up the youth movement to fail

Burris. See Bocock. Yet some how Burriss did not sink despite all teh odds.

Bowker. Skipped AAA and then if playing a possition he almost never played in the minors. Again stack everything so the young guy fails.

Velez is about the only one of those 4 tht have the oppurtunities to get the training that might give hima chance to succeed in the MLB. Problem was he was abtucher with the glove and made a lot of dumb errors. Which was his reputation .

Well..

I have to admit that I was biased by the recent game where everyone forgave him for hitting a homer after getting to third twice with less than two outs and having opportunities to score, but not taking advantage of those opportunities. Velez has had his moments too.

but you can’t blame him for bringing up kids that weren’t ready for the level of competition…

which is why i’d give him credit, at least partial, for burriss’ adjustments.

To make bricks you need straw. No straw it does not matter how much adobe, mud, or semi solid crap you have.

Yet it does appear in the second half he might have a couple bricks shaped. so might that not argue for the first half being “class” and the second half some of the results of “class” being implemented? I am not claiming this is the truth of that matter but I have seen nothing that disproves this scenario.

I’ve seen a lot worse as far as third base coach decisions go (I’m looking at you, Sonny and Wendall!) and I like that Flannery is agressive.

I have no problem when a 3rd base coach presses the issue and puts it on the defense to field the ball cleanly, make a perfect throw, catch and tag. Off the top of my head, I can’t remember more than a couple of times that guys were easy outs at home.

I love Flannery’s enthusiam. I’ll never get sick of seeing him run 2/3 of the way down the baseline with the runner as he’s yelling them home. It might be theatrical, but if yelling at a guy can help him bench press and extra 20 pounds, why wouldn’t it help him run a little harder?

It’s called making the other team make the play.

Throwing the ball into home from the outfield is actually pretty hard. The advantage is definitely to the runner.

I am all for pushing that until results show that it’s a bad idea.

And this year, it has been overwhelmingly successful.

But it is still difficult to get a runner out at the plate. In most cases, the throw has to be pretty perfect – and they often are not.

Any idea where I can find those statistics? Runner scoring from 1st or 2nd success rate?

I guarantee it is extremely high.

And to see if it is worth it, one only has to compare the % success of that runner scoring Vs. the chance of getting another hit in the inning.
