Jackie Chiles..

The actor may never have happened. When they taped the episode featuring the non-fat yogart and the mayor race in New York, one version used the episode you see now. The other episode featured the man who played Jackie Chiles as the “mayors spokesman.” If he played that part he wouldn’t have come back for Jackie.

What is wrong with it and what is a better way?

If velocity is dropping, that is an indicator you can see from watching.
If he is losing command, that is another indicator.
If he is missing up in the strike zone, that is a third.

He was doing none of those three. Well, he was starting to lose command in the ninth….but that could also have been his trying to strike every single batter out.

by positiveuphemism on Sep 13, 2008 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, you're right

from sitting on your couch watching the guy on TV you can tell if he’s tiring.

Throwing 130+ pitches at 90+ MPH is not good for your arm. Why do you need me to explain this any deeper? It is never a good idea. You can nitpick if 100 or 110 is bad, but 130 is considerably more than 100. This is how you fuck up a young pitcher’s arm, and it’s not even for a playoff push. It’s completely meaningless

You taking your chances =/= data.

There hasn’t been any correlation b/t pitch types and injury made.

There's some logical evidence behind it..

Your fastball you throw it as you can. Your offspeed stuff you actually put more effort into it so you have to use more energy to propel them and more energy to stop your arm.

That's a whole different conversation

I personally can’t walk through a forest and then say that God doesn’t exist. Sounds like BS.

BUT we’re talking about baseball. And this discussion is old and tiresome and neither side ever concedes.

by bondslegend on Sep 13, 2008 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

so pretty much every book on teaching baseball that says not to let young people throw breaking pitches because they’re harder on the elbow/shoulder are just making shit up?

by Viliphied on Sep 13, 2008 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

No, that's not what I'm saying

What I’m saying is that the people who have done the studies, most notably the USS MAriner guys, have found no correlation b/t pitch type and injury incidence.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

by delorean on Sep 13, 2008 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

i'd have to see their data

but I’m confused as to what that even means.

There are so many different types of injuries, and so many different ways of throwing pitches, and it’s often hard to pinpoint exactly what caused the injury.

(note: I’m not saying slider/curve pitchers are more likely to get injured, I’m just saying that those particular pitches are harder on the arm)

by Viliphied on Sep 13, 2008 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't find the post right now but

I don’t get what you don’t get. The data doesn;t support any theory that the type of pitch thrown is any predictor of injury.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

I don’t know who is correct, but it is fairly easy to find reputable sources arguing that breaking pitches are harder on a pitcher’s arm.

I do not think that's accurate

you’re going to tell me that throwing 95+ about 110 times in 2.5-3 hours is better than throwing a curveball? I don’t buy it.

I wrote this this past week and I think it still stands.

If you want to defend the pitch count by stating reasons for trying to win the Cy Young Award or trying to get Linecum his first career game, I won’t stop you, but I’ll have a hard time agreeing with you. I’ve been waiting for the Giants to ease up on Lincecum for most of the year and it hasn’t happened. I much favor the long term outlook of keeping Lincecum healthy over the immediate short term rewards of a first career CG or a Cy Young Award, which even though Linecum is the best pitcher in the NL this year, he isn’t a lock to win the award.

In the Chron recap, Bochy was quoted as saying:

"He’s a human being, not a toy," Bochy said. "We can’t keep running him out there."

ROTOWORLOL--- Manager Fail

Tim Lincecum’s first career complete game was a 138-pitch shutout of the Padres on Saturday.
Lincecum is an incredible pitcher. We’re really hoping that’s still the case in a few years, but we’re becoming more skeptical every time Bud Black sends him back out for that one extra inning. Does anyone really think the NL’s ERA leader needs a confidence boost at this point? Why on earth send him back out to pitch the ninth in a 7-0 game when he’s already thrown 118 pitches? He just threw 127 pitches on Monday. He had an 132-pitch outing on Aug. 27 (and followed it up with one of his worst starts of the year). Lincecum gave up two hits in the ninth tonight, bringing the Padres’ total for the night up to four. He ended up striking out 12. It was an outstanding performance. However, it wouldn’t have been any less impressive had he left after eight.
