OT: Favorite Resturants
Well, as we are about to enter the long, dark winter of the baseball soul, we must turn to fine drink and meals to sustain us through the cold, baseball-less winter.
I thought I would throw this one out before it turns into a hijack. What is your favorite resturant and why? My two favorites are:
1) Folie Deuce - Arcata, CA - Highlights include and incredible salami, brie, and apracot jam pizza, and a roqfort steak (filet with a roqfort and cream sauce). Laid back atmosphere, great food, and good people. Good wine list as well.
2) Farallon - San Francisco, CA - Great wine menu, fantastic service, and a bold pairing menu. Loved the crab gumbo with Chimay ale, and my wife still raves about the blood orange martini she had there.

There’s a Mi Pueblo up here in Oak Harbor, WA. It’s so-so. It used to be the hot spot for after hours happyfundrinkytime until someone put an actual club in this small, Navy town.
Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.

LoCoco’s on Piedmont Ave. in the East Bay… I love because the pizza is great and because I’ve been going there since I was like 5.
Boulevard in SF- I love the building, location, and, of course, the food has always been great when I’ve gone there.
Some taco truck in Oakland… I forget the street it’s on and I don’t think it has a name. The Tacos al Pastor are so good that you can eat them until you feel ill and then you still want to eat more.
Too many others to name, so I’ll just go with those for now.

I’m a broke-ass college student so my dining out fare is cheap stuff most of the time. I can’t say I go to any of the hip trendy SF eateries. Sadface. I usually just go with Chipotle or if it’s late and I’m hungry, El Pollo Loco.
There are a few hidden gems around the East Bay if you’re looking for inexpensive, yummy food. La Plaza in Pittsburg has great Mexican food, simple stuff like combo plates and that, as well as a few Cuban-inspired recipes. The arroz con pollo is superb. They also have a great Sunday brunch. Tao San Jin also in Pittsburg is very good Chinese food, especially the salt and pepper fish, the hot and sour soup, and the fried asparagus. The Mediterranean in Concord is suprisingly good Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food, plus you get a ton of it for a good price. I’m partial to the chicken kabab wrap served on lavash. Saigon Bistro in Concord is good for cheap, quick Vietnamese food. I go there quite often and they all know me in there. The seafood noodle soup is so good om nom nom.
Don’t laugh at me for saying Sushi Boat on Saratoga Ave in San Jose is good. It is. The bento there is loaded with tasty food and the sushi menu has a good lineup. The difference between this place and other inexpensive Japanese places is Sushi Boat’s use of unsweetened rice in their sushi and rolls. It really makes the food better. Sachi in San Ramon had pretty good food, although their sushi was subpar. I liked the chicken katsu and udon better anyway, and the prices were great. On the Bridge in Japantown in SF has excellent eggplant dishes, but damned if I’ll ever eat there again. They taxed the everloving snot out of us at lunch the last time I was there; health care tax, dine in tax, even a tax for the takeout container. wtf
Another great hidden SF place was a place rotoreuter and I found while wandering around for food, in the Mission. I believe it was called The Yucatan, on Valencia. They served just regional Yucatan cuisine; lots of soups like pozole. Nothing beats good pozole.
Plus Zachary’s in Berkeley has the best pizza on the planet. But I’m sure lots of us know that one.
While in Detroit last week I had a late lunch with a friend at Small Plates, an eatery featured on Food Network often. Now that was some good eatin’. It’s a place that serves tapas-like dishes, enough to share with everyone. We got the fried calimari with a spicy dipping sauce and the fish tacos. Both were spicy as hell but very delicious. The fish was very good, surprisingly good for someone like me who’s very choosy about fish. The calimari was really meaty and robust, not rubbery and chewy like a lot of calimari can be. Small Plates is near Comerica Park if you’re ever in the area, and they stay open late.

Oh also, Pork Store on Haight in the city. They’re open for breakfast and lunch only, and there’s usually a line to get in. It’s your typical diner type place, but the food is amazing. I do the AIDS Walk with a friend every year and it’s our tradition to go to Pork Store after the walk to scarf down brunch. Last year I had this amazing scrambled egg dish with fresh pesto, sundried tomatoes, broccoli, pine nuts, and cheese. They have the best hash browns I’ve ever eaten in my life there, too. Crispy and delicious.
Flames in the South Bay has spectacular cake and pie. It’s a coffee shop with pretty okay food but the bakery is unbelievable. They do an Oreo cake that is to die for; chocolate cake with fresh whipped cream frosting, cream and Oreo stuff in the middle, and crumbled up cookie things on top. The black forest cake there is similiarly amazing.

The food there is simply amazing. I’m surprised folks on these interwebz know about it.

I was in Cleveland last year, and they had pretty poor ballpark food and drink, but Yankee Stadium this summer was a huge disappointment. OK dogs, bad beer, and little variety. It makes me realize how much I take AT&T and even the Oakland Coliseum for granted.

Seriously. The food at Comerica Park was so-so. My friend (lifelong Brewers fan and he says the food at Miller Park is fantastic) had a brat and said it was bleh. The only thing they had aside from dogs and that was Little Ceasar’s pizza which is just no. We were glad we ate at Small Plates beforehand.

True story
A former friend (Red Sox fan, that explains everything) was flabbergasted when I told her I had fried calimari at the ballgame a few years back. She said OMFG I CANT BELIEVE YOU HAVE SUCH SNOBBY THINGS THERE. She literally took issue with me for not wanting a dog and a beer at the game. What the heck is wrong with enjoying some delicious squid? Dag yo. Haters.

Eh...
I don’t think those things should be served at the ballpark. Perhaps have a food court that is always open (probably would make more money as well) that is accessable on one side by passers-by and on the otherside by the ballpark goers. And as soon as the game starts, it’s only baseball stuff.

My family always goes to Kamikaze in San Rafael for Sushi. Jesse Foppert used to go there!
The Buckeye Roadhouse is a family favorite, we usually go there for most birthdays. Lemon pudding ftw (though I got the S’More pie last time I went and it was great too, though I don’t know why where were almonds in it.)
We’ve actually started going out less in favor of getting stuff at Bryan’s Fine Foods at the Town Center in Corte Madera to make at home instead. We don’t do it too often, but they have some really fantastic stuff there, especially the Korean marinated skirt steak. Om nom nom nom.
Everyone in Mill Valley gets their Mexican food at Grilly’s but I’ve always thought it was kind of overrated. I love Taqueria El Balazo on Haight Street.
Here in Boston, I love all Legal Seafoods and The Daily Catch in the North End is fantastic.

Legal Seafoods sells clam chowder on cold days at Fenway. God, it was 35 degrees in April and that chowdah was like warm ambrosia.
There’s a place in the North End called Limoncello. Best seafood risotto in town.
But the best meal for the dollar goes to Fire & Ice in Harvard Square. In between classes, I hopped the Green to get to the Red, ate, then head back. I only had a span of 1 1/2 hours to do all that. I was very surprised someone opened a chain in Livermore a couple of summers.ago

I’ve got a Charlie card, but I hate all B-lines! Takes so long to get to central Boston and it always gets ridiculously crowded around BU. I always just walk to the Reservoir stop on the D-line (it takes like 10 minutes). It gets crowded on gamedays, but it empties out at the Fenway stop.
Thanks for the tip on the restaurant though, I’ll definitely have to check that out.

My favorites
My favorites include:
- Moshi Moshi, down 3rd Street from the ballpark (head south). It’s a small place with great sushi, and Mits the owner is straight up awesome. The staff is always fantastic, too.
- The Citrus Club on Haight, around Cole. It’s a noodle house. I recommend getting the Garlic Beef and Shittake Mushroom bowl (so f’ing good), and wash it down with an Orange Unfiltered Sake Martini. Honestly, you’ll thank me later for this recommendation.
- Ploy II, also on Haight, just down from the Citrus Club. Awesome Thai restaurant.
- Truly Mediterranean, over at 16th and Valencia. Get yourself a lamb Shawerma. Again, you’ll thank me later. I cannot stress this enough… Get the lamb shawerma.
- Cafe Gratitude. I have to recommend the family restaurant. Go get your vegan on. Located at 21st and Harrison, and 9th and Irving in San Francisco, plus the one in Berkeley on the street I can’t remember the name of, one in Marin somewheres, plus another one opening up in another north bay town I can’t remember the name of offhand (I’m not that involved in the restaurant, but I still love the food!). Get the enchilada plate.
- For a pizza recommendation, I’m seconding Baron’s rec of Zachary’s. Awe, wait for it… Some.

Going to have to set aside some time next time in the Bay to get there.
Everyone should save up a little bit of cash money (ok a decent amount, but not french laundry level) and take themselves to Gary Danko’s once. Incredible food, service, and very good value.

You know
I’ve never been to Chili’s. I’ve been to Applebee’s and Red Robin. I imagine that Chili’s is just about along those lines. I imagine this for Ruby Tuesday’s as well. Is that right or is it better than those places?
As for Claim Jumper, the food is pretty good (not gourmet or anything, obviously) and you can get a lot of it. It’s good enough that I enjoy having lunch the next day from my meal the previous night.

Yeah, Chili’s is very similar to those places. I hate Applebee’s because everything I’ve had there sucks. I don’t eat at Red Robin anymore because my digestive tract rebelled against me the last time I had dinner there and the memory turns my stomach every time I think of it. I don’t know of any Ruby Tuesday around here, so I’ve never been.
I like Chili’s for a quick cheap bite. It’s all loaded with sodium but like I said, the black bean burger is just really friggin good.

Applebees..
The Lime chicken is VERY good, that’s what I usually get there. That’s not the exact name, but it’s a chicken breat marinated in lime, on top of other “mexicany” stuff (rice and tortilla strips) that are also limey. Fortunately I like lime.

I don’t know why, but literally every time I’ve been forced to eat at an Applebee’s (literally from the Bay Area to upstate NY) the service has been horrid. Worse than McDonalds bad. I don’t get how they maintain that kind of consistency across an entire continent.

Here in the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, we have a lot of really good Korean and Ethiopian/Eritrean food. I recommend Sahn Maru for Korean – it’s on Telegraph Ave., just north of the MacArthur BART station. For Ethiopian/Eritrean, I like Cafe Eritrea, also on Telegraph, also just north of MacArthur. Oh, and we also have a good barbecue take-out place in the neighborhood – The Brick Pig House. It’s on Shattuck Avenue, around 60th Street. I wouldn’t have thought of it as a favorite restaurant, but since barbecue was mentioned above…
Also in the neighborhood, we have Genova Delicatessen, an excellent Italian deli that’s been a North Oakland institution since forever, and Bakesale Betty’s, a newer place that does great strawberry shortcake, scones, pie, and fried chicken sandwiches.
I really love Cha Am, a Thai restaurant, in the gourmet ghetto section of North Berkeley. Also around that area, Chez Panise is great for a special occasion. Not the most original recommendation, I know, but there’s a reason why it’s so acclaimed!
For pizza, both Zachary’s and Cheese Board Pizza are amazing.

There’s a place called The Crab Pot on the Seattle waterfront. They give you a bib, dump a bunch of sea food on the table, and you eat it with your hands and pop open crab with a mallet. Pretty cool.
There was a place in Seattle called the Mediterranean kitchen. It was Lebanese and other East Med food. Delish. They had this amazing Med-style dressing that made an amazing marinade. I went to eat there last month and there was another restaurant in it’s place… I cried. Haven’t been able to find out if it moved. :(
In Imperial Beach (south of Coronado) there is a little Mexican place called …Albeto’s. Total hole in the wall. Hidden gem. Reminded me what I missed about California – delicious Mexican food. I brought some burritos back with me on a plane to Washington for my roommates.
But my favorite restaurant in the world I actually have no idea of the name. We call it PATS, for Place Across The Street, referring to it’s location across from a little base that we sometimes stay at on Crete. It’s another hole in the wall… but it’s the best Greek food I’ve ever had. I could eat there for the rest of my life. Best souvlaki and gyro’s ever. And wash it down with an ice-cold Mythos… ahhhhhhh. Heaven. I will visit Crete again just to eat there.

While I enjoy this restaurant (especially the La Habra location) only recommend a few items on the menu. The blue corn enchiladas is another excellent choice. I keep remembering good places to eat
Zeman Kan on University Ave in Palo Alto has great food. It’s standard Middle Eastern/Mediterranean stuff like falafel and lamb dishes, plus they have an extensive veg menu. I had this thing with baked cauliflower and eggplant and rice with salad and veggies on the side there. It was a lunch special for $10 and it came with pita bread and a salad. Great stuff, plus the guys who work there are HOT.

Two things I miss from Chicago
The first neighborhood we lived in in Chicago (Uptown) was right near the Vietnamese community, and there were TONS of great, cheap restaurants. There are a number of Vietnamese restaurants in the East Bay – more than the last time I lived here – but I haven’t found one I love yet.
The second neighborhood where we lived in Chicago (the border of East Rogers Park and Edgewater), there was a small Somali community nearby. We fell in love with one of the Somali restaurants nearby – it was VERY authentic, or I assume it was as it catered almot exclusively to Somali cab drivers. Every time we went there, I was the only white person, and my wife was usually the only woman. They had great spiced rice, goat, chicken, and other goodness.
I tried checking on Yelp to see if there were any Somali restaurants in or around Oakland, but there were no results. Sad.
We do have a Cameroonian restaurant that’s really good, though! Called A Taste of Africa. It’s up near the border of Oakland and Berkeley, a few blocks south of the Berkeley Bowl on Shattuck.
So, um, I like food. Have you noticed!?

The best place to go if you're in Chicago?
Google “White Fence Farm,” and go there! It’s the craziest place! It’s like stepping into a time machine and setting it for the 1985, specifically for a weird diner experience. They’re touted as being the best chicken place to eat, which my wife, our friends and I all found to be just okay. But it’s worth it just for the extremely surreal experience.

Woung Luang Psai Cuisine in Concord. Loads of curry dishes with fantastic presentation. A friend got the pineapple curry and it actually arrived in a hollowed out pineapple. I love Indian food. I liked Ajanta, though I haven’t been there in 10 years. There’s also a hole-in-the-wall place called Breads of India in Berkeley near Dwight Way and Sacramento that was very good.
On upper Grand Avenue in Oakland there’s a Korean barbecue place called, I think, Jong Ga, that’s nondescript-looking from the outside (and the interior is nothing fabulous, either), that I like. I find those Korean hot fish stews overpowering but irresistable.

and it was a while ago, but I remember really liking it.
Of course, living in North Berkeley, I always go to Khana Peena which is across the street from Ajanta. Not as fancy as Ajanta, not as gourmet, bigger menu, more typical Indian food, but I find it very good (and cheaper).

One thing I have noticed about my liking restaurants
I’m not that picky when it comes to food. If the food is reasonably good, then I’m okay. What sets places apart is how much of a value it is (how much food one gets and how much one pays for it) and/or the experience. Experience usually coincides with family outings. Therefore, I tend to like places that my family goes to together.
Claim Jumper would fall under both of those categories. That’s probably why it’s my favorite restaurant. But others that come to mind upon further reflection are:
Amigos in Sonoma. Good Mexican place but the real draw for me is you get a lot of food. Plus, it was my friends’ and my favorite place to eat at in Sonoma when I was a teenager still dating my future-wife when she lived there.
The Dead Fish in Crockett. The family goes there every so often. It’s quite good. We get…dang it, I can’t remember what it’s called (a tomato based stew with sea food in it [the crab one is especially good] served in a tureen, family style). Good view of the Carquinez straight, good food and it’s a place our family goes. Sounds good to me.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
by thehavenot on Sep 11, 2008 10:33 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I’d back that up. I’m really not at all picky about what I eat, so long as it’s good. Most places I find are just a matter of opinion, so there’s very rarely a restaurant I’d recommend wholeheartedly. The places I’d listed above are just those because I’ve always found the food to be excellent, and I’ve never heard anyone complain about any of them (except now for delorean and you badmouthing the family business!).

The thing I've noticed about restaurants
is that I can rarely recommend a restaurant per se, but individual dishes. Its rare for me to got a a restaurant and find more than two or three things on the menu that I like (particular at fancy pants restaurants, who’s going to drop $30 on a dish that they’re less than 100% sold on?).

It’s not a restaurant, but in South Berkeley, there’s a Thai Buddhist temple that does a Thai brunch/lunch every Sunday as a fundraiser. It is OMG SO GOOD. They have great curries, Thai ice tea, Pad Thai, fried chicken, summer rolls, and all sorts of other goodness. When my wife and I go there with our 2-year old, we spend about $20 and get a TON of food for that money – enough to stuff ourselves and bring home leftovers.
If you’re in the East Bay, you MUST GO. And if you do, tell me. I might have to tag along.

I am a bit spoiled
For some reason there seems to be quite a few very nice eateries in my little town. Most are way too expensive for what they offer, but invariably the food is quality. My current favorite is The Peasant and the Pear in downtown Danville. Another pretty good place and much less formal than the above (with a ton of great beers which is always a bonus to a lush like me) is Pete’s Brass Rail.
On the overrated list would be Bridges. it hasn’t been a good place to eat for about 4 years.

Best burger in the Central Valley
Fat Jack’s in Clovis, on Shaw between Willow and Peach. Been going there with varying degrees of regularity for about 15 years. One of those 50’s-type places, where they serve you in your car and play music from the 50’s, except they really don’t do the whole 50’s thing that much anymore. But the burgers rule. Their western-style one, with the BBQ sauce and the onion rings, holy crap, it’s to die for.
There was also a nice little soul food-type place tucked away in the corner of a nearby liquor store. They sold this huge combo BBQ plate – four different meats with two sides. Mmmmmm. Went there yesterday and it was gone. Me no happy.
Damn. Is it lunchtime yet?

I’ve had the pleasure of living in San Francisco and New York City in my short life. The only difference between SF and NYC that I’ve noticed is the pizza. As soon as I’m in NY, the first place I go to is a small pizzeria in Brooklyn called Luigi’s. A Brooklyn slice is heaven.
In San Francisco I’m really fond of Tomasso’s in North Beach. Also, my girlfriend and I are huge believers in Brunch. By and far, the best place in San Francisco is Zazie’s on Cole St. It is so much better than MaMa’s and the wait is not ridiculous.

I learned, over my years there, that if you go to a Mexican restaurant and they warn you the plate is hot, and it’s half-covered with watery refried beans, RUN AWAY. The food will be terrible.

When I was in NYC a couple weeks ago we tried going to Grimaldi’s but the line was too long. Also, Danny DeVito was standing right next to the line, a few feet away from us, talking on a cell phone. Then he walked past the waiting diners and right in the place. Must be nice being a celebrity.

Pizza...
When you get it up here it’s cut weird, they make it into squares instead of the pie cut. But the pizza is still round so you get little triangles of just crust and then you have squares of no crust. They do it wrong.

Favorite Restaurants on Shuffle Play/Random
Shan Dong in Oakland’s Chinatown. Go for the handmade dumplings, the hand-cut noodles, and the Lotus Chicken. It’s my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area.
Libby’s in Philo (up in Anderson Valley). OMG the best carnitas on the planet, and amazingly fresh salsa as well. They also do a KILLER cheeseburger that will make atheists reconsider whether there might be a God after all, and whether she takes corporeal form as a short Mexican lady named Libby.
Interstate BBQ in Memphis, TN. Their pulled pork sandwich made me cry tears of joy. Can you tell I enjoy pork?
Peter Luger. Old school steakhouse in Williamsburg part of Brooklyn. I just ate there again a couple weeks ago and it was amazing. Worth the high cost.
Lastly, although I’ve only been there once and that was nine years ago, there’s a Polish restaurant in Chicago called the Red Apple that did this outrageously delicious all-you-can-eat buffet that cost me $4.95 plus tax and tip. It’s probably 7 or 8 bucks now but I still remember the meal like it was yesterday. Plus our waitress was gorgeous, for what it’s worth.

Get the bacon appetizer… huge slabs of thick-cut bacon (seriously, about 1/2 inch thick) that you can stick under your lip like tobacco and wait for it to melt slowly away.
One of the crusty old waiters told me that the one day all year when you can just walk off the street and get a table is Super Bowl Sunday, when every man in town is watching football instead of trying to get on those steaks.

Xanthan – is there still a Thai restaurant in Harrisonburg? I’ve never visited, but one opened when my wife was going to JMU, and she’s often gone on about how great it was. Maybe because it was pretty much the only Asian restaurant in Harrisonburg when she was there, but were she a McCoven, I’m sure she’d recommend it. I’ll have to ask her what the name is.

If you want to brave the not-so-great neighborhood: Guadalajara on International Blvd. It’s a stone’s throw from Fruitvale BART and they do it right. They have live mariachi music on Friday and Saturday nights. Good food, good service, good atmosphere.

The one on B St? Near the fire station? It used to be great back when I was in college. We went there about a year ago, and it was horrid. Both the cheese and the salsa were of the nasty, fake, canned variety. What a huge disappointment.

The same thing happened with my favorite sushi restaurant, Isobune (on College Avenue in Oakland). It used to be great – good fish, good rolls, HUGE menu, including items like jellyfish that I’ve never seen anywhere else. Then one time we went and the fish was very iffy, the service sucked, and several items we tried to order weren’t available. We hope it was just a bad day, but when we went back, it was just as bad.
Recently it changed ownership and it has a new name now. I haven’t bee able to bring myself to try it, though.

Bay Area Food Nostalgia
I’ve been in NYC for nigh on 20 years now, but my fave from back when I lived in the Bay Area and could eat ANYTHING without gaining weight was definitely FLINT’S BBQ in Oakland. You just can’t get that kind of BBQ in NYC, and believe me, I’ve tried them all. The Thai food sucks in New York, too. My favorite Thai place was called Your Place, on University in Berkeley. Homey and amazing.

But when I lived in NYC, there was a GREAT Vietnamese place – it used to be called Vietnam, then changed its name to Doyer Vietnamese Restaurant. It’s on Doyer Street in Chinatown, which is a little one-block street off of the Bowery.

by tyrannoman on Sep 11, 2008 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Virgil’s tastes okay, but really just okay. The place that tries the hardest (and comes kinda close) is Blue Smoke (a Danny Meyer restaurant) — they even built some ridiculous Large Hadron Collider-sized air-scrubber so they could build a real fire pit inside. Both places do better with the Carolina-style BBQ than with the Texas-style (I think) they had at Flint’s.

Places I eat
Taiwan on Clement has the best dumplings ever. I usually get a plate of pot stickers and steamed pork dumplings to go along with a beef soup noodle bowl. Perfection. Another place with pretty good dumplings is San Tung on Irving. It has these fantastic dry wet (it’s hard to explain…) fried chicken wings that is its signature dish. It’s usually crazy packed, so it’s recommended getting there a little bit before meal time.
If it’s dim sum you want, there are a couple places I go to on Clement. I only know the Chinese names for them, so that won’t be very helpful to you all, but Clement is where I’d recommend going. I prefer it over Chinatown places because it’s less crowded and the food quality is better. Also Chinatown is on the other side of the city for me, so those places are closer anyway.
On Balboa there’s Americana, which is a Vietnamese and Italian place. Yeah… It’s not a fusion place. They serve Vietnamese and Italian food, so you can have pho with a side of chicken parmegiana. There are tons of pho places around SF, but I usually stick to the ones in the Sunset or RIchmond districts.

Ichiraku on Geary gives you lots of food for relatively low prices. It’s not really authentic Japanese food (it’s owned by Chinese folks and the rolls are made by a couple of Latino guys), but it’s still pretty good.

It’s best to just order your dim sum because the stuff I want never comes around. Thousand Layer cake FTW.

In Sacramento our favorite “company” Mexican restaurant is Tres Hermanas 2416 K St for more casual dining La Favorita is good – we go to the one on Stockton near Fruitridge in the Kmart parking lot.
In that same area is a Pho restaurant – can’t remember the name, but it’s in the strip mall a wee bit south of the Kmart, north of the WaMu.
For Thai we like Thai Basil 2431 J Street.
Chicago Fire – also on J- or UNO’s in Antioch is where we go for pizza.
and Willie’s [5050 Arden Way] is currently the favorite burger joint.
oh and Leatherby’s on Arden for malts and ice cream – but never for the “real food”

I share your sentiments about Leatherby’s and Thai Basil.
I’ll have to try Willie’s.
I like Chicago Fire, but don’t feel like it deserves mention on the same page as Zachary’s.
Have you tried Garibaldi’s on Howe and Alta Arden? Currently my favorite Mexican place.

Horchata, I’m not so sure about. But let me put it this way. You can get a face or tongue taco, and the 7 seas soup comes with things that most white people don’t want to look at, much less eat.
There’s an avocado shrimp ceviche tostada that’s killer, and you can order buckets of Corona!

Eat Through the Valley to the Foothills
Starting in Davis, CA -
The Mustard Seed: a little pricey but worth it. Order anything with fish or duck.
Fuzio: The Firecracker Pork Fusilli and handmade raviolis are excellent.
Noodle Express: generic name for a really good chinese restaurant. Does a very authentic “Fish-flavored pork”.
Moving over to Sacramento-
Moxie: similar to the Mustard seed in price and quality. Best mashed potatoes in the world.
The Fox and Goose: Great sunday breakfast. The eggs benedict with rarebit sauce is awesome. They mix a good bloody mary, too.
Oz Korean Barbeque: Is what it says, and is really good.
Xin Guangzhou: Good dim sum place, with a good seafood menu for dinner. I like the braised trout with eggplant.
Guy Who Sells Tamales at the 16th and P Farmer’s Market: $1.50 for a tamale that embarrasses the polenta at every fancy restaurant I’ve ever been to.
Then up the hill and south to little Sonora-
The Diamondback: Makes great burgers, fantastic salads and a really awesome grilled eggplant. The deserts there are pretty good, especially Sherri’s cheesecake.

In Auburn :Mongolian BBQ in old downtown. All you can squish into one bowl for one low flat rate. Yummy.
In Grass Valley: Diego’s Chilean food. Everything is outstanding. Also, Pine St Cafe for Brunch.

Mission district
We live in the mission, so there’s not alot of reason to leave the hood
for anything except baseball…so here goes:
Range—best in the area. Seasonal American. Fresh simple, consistent. Great service, nice wine list.
Maverick—Small, loud, fun. Great for groups at the big table. Kevin Youkilis’s big brother Scott is the the chef/part-owner. American food done with regional emphesis.
Limon—Peruvian. Great ceviche, wine, fish, meat. Peruvian potatoes in wild colors. Temporaily closed for fire damage caused by a crackhead sparkin the upstairs apt.
They also have a rotissere outlet on S Van Ness (@ 21st?) which also rocks.
BarBambino—Great Italian wine and food. Was just named 2nd best wine bar in US by Bon Appetit magazine according to Chris the owner. Open late so you can dine there after a night game—which we do at least once a homestand.
Barreta—Also great Italian, food served till 1:00AM nightly. Full bar. Nice designer pizzas and great risotto.
Delfina—More great Italian food and wine. Also have a pizzeria next door.
Tartine Bakery—Best bakery in SF…possibly anywhere.
Conduit—Relative newcomer. Great pastas, creative trios of meats.
Chez Spencer—Classic french in the hood.
Foriegn Cinema (brunch)—Dinner is only OK. Beautiful space.
Universal Cafe—Great lunch, brunch, underrated for dinner.
Cheap Eats: El Toro taqueria, Puerto Allegro sitdown mexican (pitchers of margaritas), El Taqueria (already mentioned in this thread).
In case you havent guessed we eat out a lot.
Other hoods: Spruce, Danko, La Folie, Swans Oyster Bar, Quince. Acme Chop House (it is convenient to the park)

Southern Oregon: Sammy’s Cowboy Bistro looks like a porn shack, and it’s next to a less-than-tidy trailer park, but it’s some gourmet-ass vittles.
Portland: The executive chef at Mint stayed in our guest room for a year while he was going to culinary school, so I feel partly responsible for its good food.
Burlingame: Gabriel & Daniel’s Mexican Grill happens to be randomly stuck at a driving range. WTF? But it’s so, so good. And Hot Wok Bistro is randomly stuck in the middle of a residential Burlingame neighborhood, and it’s one of the better Chinese-American places around. I’m waiting for a good Italian place to show up in the middle of a park fountain.

Your “porn shack” remark reminds me of when I lived in Amherst, MA for a year. The only Chinese grocery in the area is right across the river from Northampton, and shares a building with a porn store. We used to shop there a lot, and I remember always feeling slightly dirty waiting for traffic to clear so we could pull out some of our groceries, hold them up, and call out, “I AM NOT A PERVERT I BOUGHT HOISIN SAUCE!”
Mem-ories.

Sushi Sho in North Berkeley/Albany. The real deal as far as Sushi goes. Traditional style, great fish, and easily one of the better places I have been to outside of Japan. But you’re going to pay, and don’t ask stupid questions.
Pizza: Pizziola: temescal, Zachary’s, Gioia; Berkeley; Arinell and Za’s in SF. If stuck further East, Melo’s is pretty good.
Thai Osha: Pleasant Hill. Unassuming place and location, but excellent and authentic thai food (unlike the chinese-thai stuff you mostly see).

New place to try in San Francisco...
My dad is partner in a restaurant that is opening next week in San Francisco. It’s called “La Mar Cevicheria Peruana”, or La Mar for short, and will feature Peruvian cuisine. The chef is one of Peru’s most famous, Gaston Acurio.
It is located at Pier 1 1/2, and features a large cevice bar and ouside dining on the water. It’s going to be pretty cool, you guys should check it out if you get the chance (from what I’ve heard, it’s not on the pricy side). I’m still trying to talk him into a MCC discount.
Oh, and my fav places?

Alright...
I’m sure you guys are all dying to hear about all the great restaurants in my town of Marathon, WI aren’t you. But I won’t tell you, because there’s only McD’s, Subway, and bars to eat here. But here were my favorites from California.
Blue Sky- Chinese food, good service, great food. Right near downtown Campbell also, used to go here about once a month, either sit down or take out. Rec’s: Chinese chicken salad, Mandarin beef (I think it was that, it’s their orange beef style).
Sno-White Drive In- Soft Serve Ice Cream. Oakdale, CA, on the NS portion of Hwy 120, the West side of the road. After a long day of hiking in Yosemite my dad and I would always stop here to get a cone of soft serve, just the thing to finish the day. I guess this could be said about the Tuolumne Meadows Grill too.
And that’s about it I guess. For cheap food I’d always go to Burrito Factory, could get a huge burrito for a buck or so.

I miss the Bay
But:
Sushi: Sushi House in Alameda. They were originally just one storefront in that stupid mall by the water. Then they expanded next door because they were so busy. What happened? They got busier. Now they are in the parking lot in what used to be a Lyon’s. This is now a gigantic sushi place. They are awesome, too…that’s why they have expanded so much. Also, the wait is now stupidly long. Not as good as they used to be, but what do you expect for a place that is like 10x bigger than it used to be.
Mexican: El Toro at 17th and Valencia. You either know how awesome they are or you haven’t been yet.
Chinese: It’s San Francisco, there is good Chinese everywhere.
Late night: It’s Tops, on Duboce and Market. They are open from 10pm > 3am for the bar crowd and in the mornings for breakfast. Good food.
Burgers: Burger Joint, 19th and Valencia.
Sanwiches: That place right next to West Portal Station. I forget the name…something about subs.
Italian: I like Mona Lisa in North Beach, but you really can’t go wrong.
Socal Version:
Sushi – Sushi Gesshin. Hachi is a great, gregarious, engaging sushi chef. The sushi is top notch and his special rolls are wonderful. This is probably the thing about Orange County that I will miss the most once I leave.
Sandwiches: Big Belly Deli: Newport Beach. It’s on PCH right at the NB/HB border. I knew the place would be good the first time I went and saw the photographs all over the walls. People go on vacation and borrow a sign from BBD that says “I’d rather be at the big belly deli” then they get a picture and it gets put on the wall. There is even one from Pacbell Park…they got the quote on the scoreboard. Oh yeah, awesome huge sandwiches at good prices.
Yay.

2 places worth mentioning
one nice place:
Espetus: A Brazilian BBQ place in San Francisco (Market and Gough). It is an all you can eat place where they bring you endless servings of deliciously grilled meat (chicken, beef, lamb, shrimp, sausages, etc.) I ate so much that I threw up (no joke)
and a chain fast food kind of place:
Wing Stop: If you like wings (and I consider myself a connoisseur) these are absolutely the best wings I have ever had. One went in near the house I grew up in Modesto about 5 years ago and I tried it and was blown away. Since then I have sung its praises to anybody who would listen and challenged everybody to show me a place with better wings. The number of locations has exploded the last few years and now there is one in the Hegenberger Complex near the Oakland Airport, one in Hayward, Alameda, San Jose, and a new one coming next to the Redwood City CalTrain station. Incredible wings.
