Post Game Fun Chatter!
For the next hour, I will not think about how happy the Dodgers must be. For the next hour, I will only think about how sweet it is to play spoiler against the Diamondbacks.
And what's with walking Rowand semi-intentionally? Do the Diamondbacks need someone in the front office to pony up for MLB.tv?

Games left:
6 against the bums
4 dbacks
4 SD
3 Rox
If we win out, we will be 82-80. That would probably win the division seeing that we’d have given the dodgers 6 losses on the way.

Let's look at it irrationally
4 against the Padres. We can beat them. They suck.
4 against the Dbacks. We just rolled them…we can do it again.
3 against the Rox. Hm…this could be a problem but fuck it, they suck, too.
6 against the bums. It is part of our very history to ruin their postseason plans. This is a way to do it.
Timmy and Cain will start like 7, maybe 8 of these games. That’s almost half and that doesn’t really make sense but go with it. We should win all of those.
Zito seems to have become a decent pitcher again. He can win out, too!
This can happen folks. 22 in a row to close out the year then demolish everyone with Tim and Matt and 2008 WS champions! Woohoo! The rebuild worked!

9 games in the loss column
Is what we need to make up on the bums. 6 wins against them leaves 3…so we would have to be 3 or 4 games better in the remaining 11 games.

Positives
1.) Effective pinch runner who will steal if you don’t respect him
2.) Can play 2b, OF, and probably 3b if they let him
3.) XBH power + speed that will command respect from opposing pitchers (can’t pump him fastballs, he can make you pay).
4.) Enough speed to rush infielders and cause errors / other mistakes.
5.) Switch hitter
I think that is a guy most teams would like to have on the bench.

From groug's link:
BenÃtez started 2007 well, converting all of his first seven save opportunities.4 However, in May, BenÃtez picked up two blown saves and three losses, including a blown save and a loss against his former team, the Mets, where he committed two balks. 5 After the game BenÃtez commented, “I didn’t do my job”, contrasting with his previous game where he picked up the loss yet claimed, “I did my job.” MLB.com writer Chris Haft reported that this added “little to the family atmosphere” at the Giants ballclub. 6 BenÃtez had once before said, “I did my job,” even when tallying a blown save, during a Giants loss to the Nationals in 2006. 7
Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

An interesting twist
Unless the team just completely rolls over, we are probably going to win close to 73 games. If we get to 73, we don’t lose 90. Think about that? This team that we expected to lose over 100 games may end up losing less than 90.

Say Sheirholtz and Sandoval manage to produce @ Winn and Molina levels in 2010. I think we would all be very happy with that.
And that would merely mean that the team maintains it’s current situation.

…around here there were a number of folks saying the Rays were putting together a good team. I know because I remember scoffing at them and saying I’d believe it when I saw it.
Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

Many sabr types actually
predicted the DRays would contend, due to the large amount of young talent that they have accumulated via sucking for years.

Yeah
But they had been predicting such for three years, at least.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.

If you predict something for long enough
and it eventually happens, you can say “See! I told youz”
Not that there aren’t a lot of good data available from SABR, but as a pre-season predictor? Not so much. A lot of that is based on who was on a roster last season and most of the time, fails to take account of the players that might be called up during the season.
In fact, a very good example of the above is the Giants. The hometown 9 were supposed to score less than 400 runs and lose 120 games. Well….not so much.

I don’t think they ever actually predicted the Rays to be an 85+ win team until this year, actually.

I had been seeing contributors from many different sabermetrically inclined websites predict good things for the DRays. Usually it was simply, “The Rays could be really good this year.”
I’m not knocking them for it. TB had so much talent in the minors that it was only a matter of when, not if. But to come out and praise them for this prediction is a little off, I think.

If you disagree with 2010
when do you feel is realistic?
by positiveuphemism on Sep 10, 2008 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I, for one, am pretty confident
that the Giants could be competitive by 2020.

I think they can manage one winning season between now and then.
by chilibean_3 on Sep 10, 2008 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I feel 2010 is realistic
But not necessarily probable. It is just as likely that this team is a 75 win team in 2010 as it is a 90 win team (or even an 85 win team).

Caincecum should be awesome by 2010
And who knows who else will develop. I think there is a good chance that we could have a legitimate 3rd ace by that point. In fact, in 2010 we could have nothing worse than a 3rd starter.
With league average offense, and there is no reason to think we can’t be average in two years, that is a playoff team.
by positiveuphemism on Sep 10, 2008 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think there are plenty of reasons to think we could be worse than average in two years
Like I said, we are losing two of our best offensive players. The players we have to replace them are, at this point, question marks.

I see what you are saying
I just can’t envision us not getting better. It seems unfathomable to me that we would still suck on offense in two years.
by positiveuphemism on Sep 10, 2008 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, short of signing a big FA
It is entirely possible. Posey will be good, but it’s not likely we just drafted the next Arod or Bonds.
We will do well to repalce the loss of Molina and Winn, and hope for something to happen at third.

Also, if Winn could return a change of scenery AAA player, we could be in business with some luck

That is what it comes down to
The Giants being competitive (not just shitty NL west competitive) in 2010 will take luck.

it is very very hard
to not suck on offense when you don’t have at least one bona-fide stud. Preferably 2.
I am talking like OPS 1000 stud-stud, not like Randy win “possibly above average for his position” stud.

Yeah but
those two offensive players (Winn and Molina) are slightly above league average. Their loss will be far easier to offset with comparable or better performance than even one Bonds caliber player.
Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

And while Caincecum may be awesome
They also may not. I find it hard to imagine Lincecum getting any awesomer than he has been this year, and pretty easy to imagine him regressing.
Cain will probably continue to be Cain, which means in 2010 I think the most likely situation is more of the same.
We will probably have Bumgarner midseason however, so that might help.

I think Timmy will get better. I think he will get to Pedro 1999-2000 levels and possibly surpass them.

And what makes you think this? There is zero evidence to support this, as much as I love Tim.

He's a student of the game, for one
He takes care of his body in a way that we haven’t seen and appears to be a better way to do it. Over time it might change but at this point, physically, he is way ahead of the game.
This is his second year in the league and the hitters already think he is the best pitcher out there and he is still struggling with his control and command a lot of the time. Wait till he gets he walks down with the other “elite” pitchers.
That Marichal thing was interesting. Apparently Tim is now going to see how different release points will work. If he can learn to effectively throw his pitches from a second or even a third release point, it will make things that much harder for the hitter.
The whole Koufax thing. I get the sense, which is not evidence, that his goal is to be as good or better than Koufax. He’s not there yet and probably has to get better to do it.

Doesn’t necessarily make them better.

realistically, Timmy will be like any other quasi-ace: 3+ years of low 3, high 2’s ERA with 14-18 wins

quasi-ace?
What does that mean?
by positiveuphemism on Sep 10, 2008 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
my term for any pitcher, true ace or not, who has a season like Lincecum’s. A lot of pitcher are great for 3 or so years then drop off the map. recent examples would be Zito and Schmidt. there are those who remain aces for long periods of time, such as Pedro.

The case for CC
I’ve seen people try to make posts about this potential signing but none have really generated good discussion.
I’ve been thinking about it a lot and have come to the conclusion that he would be a bad signing for a couple reasons:
He will likely want more than 3 years and I don’t trust his health more than that. Also, after 3 years his salary could get in the way of Lincecum/Cain.
He also could just be hitting his stride and will pitch at a high level for another six of seven years. He wants to come here, which is nice. I’d take him, of course.
Is he likely to stay healthy? Keep his numbers up?

I really don’t trust any pitcher on a deal of more than 6 guaranteed years and CC would certainly get that. Given his body type, I’d be even more wary of giving that kind of years/money.
