TRADE ROWAND
as the season winds down, it's pretty clear who has become the least valuable outfielder on this team (dave roberts aside).
Winn is having a career year hitting over .310 and so far stealing 25 bags. Lewis is having a good year, posting a better average, slugging percentage, and on base percentage than Rowand. Let's not forget Lewis' 21 stolen bases, next to Rowand's 2.
There seems to be a consensus that Schierholtz is the real deal. Is it Winn that's in his way, clogging up right field? Or is it Rowand, with his mediocre defensive play, lack of 5th hitter power, no speed, no arm and exorbanant salary, who is preventing this team from progressing? It's about time somebody recognize this, because is a .280 season with 15 hrs really worth it? The Giants have better guys for the job. Randy can play a better center field that Rowand in my opinion. I get that Aaron's a "gamer" but are you going to tell me that he plays harder than Randy Winn? Randy deserves to be back next year, and I think Lewis and Schierholtz have earned starting spots as well. Rowand's mediocre, and nothing more. Time to deal him, or just cut him and eat his salary, it's what's best for the team. He has no potential that he hasn't already realized.

In the U.S. federal court decision in the case, known as Bright Tunes Music v. Harrisongs Music,1 Harrison was found to have unintentionally copied the earlier song. He was ordered to surrender the majority of royalties from “My Sweet Lord” and partial royalties from All Things Must Pass. Former manager Allen Klein, who earlier had supported Harrison’s case, became the owner of Bright Tunes, after they parted ways. In the long run this worked against Klein, but it resulted in the case continuing for years in court.

We had to sing “Yellow Submarine” in chorus or choir or whatever the 5th grade (1983) singing class was called. During the chorus, the teacher would “help” us by shouting “AGAIN!” each time we belted out the line “We all live in a yellow submarine.” So much so, in fact, that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to hear this song and not chant “AGAIN” during the chorus.
I have a friend who absolutely hates Yellow Submarine. Every time she gets into my car I always have it on nice and loud. It was funny until she started kicking my ass for it.

George's guitar solos...
Were always very melodic and riffy. Never really the biting string picking you hear in a guitar solo but just the higher volume riffs.

But not by McCartney's choice really...
I’m sure Paul wanted a great guitar song on all the songs above and “took over” for George. George had been playing the guitar solo on Weeps and couldn’t get what he wanted, and he invited Clapton.

Also..
Ringo definitely not a weak link. If anything I think musically John is the weak link, only creatively Ringo is a weak link.
I heard somewhere that in their entire recording career, only 4 or 5 times did a take break down because of a Ringo error. That’s amazing, considering I’d screw up all the time if I were a drummer. Sure he wasn’t the most technical drummer, but he is the most consistent guy out there ever.

Thats true. Which leads to Ringo being the most overrated and underrated drummer of all time. Quite a distinction.

by BrianBokake on Sep 11, 2008 12:19 AM PDT up reply actions
It's hard to reimagine this from today
But one of George Martin’s innovations at the very beginning was to crank up the level of Ringo’s drums in the main mix much much higher than standard mixes of the day, which creates a lot of the sense of excitement in their early sound. John Bonham later claimed that the sound of Ringo’s drums in those early records was his major inspiration in creating his extraordinary sound.
Actually, has anybody else read Geof Emerick’s “Here, There, and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Beatles”? It’s a treasure trove.
Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

It’s not always appropriate, especially when someone takes the time to make a real post, especially of a subject that has not been fanposted yet.
Also OP: Rowand is not getting traded. If he had a great year, he’d be tradable, but after such a huge drop-off, it won’t happen. Who would want to pay him 12 million a year for four years for what he has given us this year?
by positiveuphemism on Sep 10, 2008 2:10 PM PDT reply actions
Sometimes they’re funny..
Anyway.. even if trading Rowand were possible, it’s a pretty short-sighted view to want to trade him right now. Sure, Schierholtz is currently blocked by Winn and Winn is currently better than Rowand, but I think most people agree that over the next few years they’ll probably be comparable, with a definite edge to Rowand in terms of intangibles (yes, they exist). I personally think he’s a great presence, especially among so many young guys that we’ll be having. Furthermore, Winn’s contract expires after next year. It’s MUCH easier to trade a guy with one year left on his contract than a guy with like four years (?). It’s also difficult to say who would be our 3rd OF after Winn leaves. Schierholtz, Lewis, and some random guy doesn’t seem like a great OF to me.

We didn’t sign Rowand to a two year contract..
I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..
Rowand has been horrible, but yeah, trading him right now, when he’s undoubtedly at the nadir of his value (horrible second half – he’s not this bad – plus 4 years left on his contract) would probably be a bad idea. Getting rid of someone just to get rid of them never seems to turn out very well.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Agreed, Rowand isn’t going anywhere, and it wouldn’t make sense for us to trade him anyway. Also, the Randy Winn is better than Rowand thought, is pure “what have you done lately” logic, and just based on this current disappointing season (which hasn’t actually been so terrible). A lot of people wanted us to dump Winn after his 2006 season as well, but he’s done well since.
Rowand was better offensively than Winn in 3 of the last 4 years (with Winn being better during his huge 2005) & so saying Winn’s going to be better offensively is arguable. Defensively, Rowand is generally better than Winn, metrics disagree on him, but he’s generally an above average defender in CF. Winn Is generally rated a good defender in RF & an ok one in CF. Age-wise Rowand is also 3 years younger than Winn & a better bet long-term.
Proud owner of the most boring Username! Alex Hinshaw: Now showing in a bullpen near you!
I would’ve taken this more seriously except for the part about cutting him and eating his salary. Yeah, let’s pay $48M so another team, maybe a division rival, can have 4 years of a league-average (or better if he rebounds) CF essentially for free. That doesn’t even start to make sense.
Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.

excellent comment Grant
would you consider posting this on the homepage (front page?) for all to see?
your 2008 SF Giants: this isn’t totally insane, just really stupid
I think hijacks are just all the new rage right now. It’s not the first time we’ve gone though a hijack boom.
This, too, shall pass.
I think things just always go in bursts around here. A while ago there was a period where we got a lot of complaints that too many FanPosts were being made. Bhaakon said something like “the last fanpost on the main page was made about 3 days ago, that seems right to me.” And then the next day there was boom and the last fanpost on the list had been made about 3 hours ago, and five of the active ones were repeats, and it went like that for a week or so.
A few days ago, one of the top fanposts had been made over a day prior.
Eventually, we’ll have another blitz, and then it will quiet down.
People will get their fill of hijacking or of participating in hijacks. Then, one day a few months from now it’ll all happen again.
I do think it’s pretty unfortunate that a post about a subject we’ve never seen before got hijacked within one comment, but in a week or two the hijack fad will be over.

There's a reason
I do think it’s pretty unfortunate that a post about a subject we’ve never seen before got hijacked within one comment
I suppose it’s unfortunate, and maybe a bit rude. But on the other hand, the reason no one has brought up the idea of trading Rowand is that it’s a stupid idea. He’s not tradeable. Maybe you could get a third-tier prospect if you ate half his salary, but what would be the point?
It was a stupid signing, true, but get used to watching him, because he’s going to be here for the next four years.
Err
Well it was less stupid than signing Andruw Jones.

Anyways, anyone remember the guy who does a lot of songs like this? I know he was on Greg Kihn’s morning show quite a bit a while back, 3-4 years ago.
P.S. Is Greg Kihn still on the radio?

Barry Zito, 2nd half revelation: Forgot about his contract and the fact that he will make over $10M a year for the next few years no matter what. Hits stopped coming and strikeouts started piling up.
Aaron Rowand, 2nd half revelation: Remembered his contract and the fact that he will make over $10M a year for the next few years no matter what. Hits stopped coming and strikeouts started piling up.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Rowand was the wrong move at the wrong time. We already had an overpaid CF with questionable power. Rowand’ll be due to move to a corner OF spot by the end of his contract, while he’ll (hopefully) still be hitting like a CF. I don’t know what we can get for him coming off a year where his HR’s decreased by 40% and his “gold glove” defense looked average, at best. Sabean and Bochy think too highly of his gamerness to deal him, anyway.
Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.

I've always thought the Beatles were overrated
You know who makes some good tunes? A little band called Rush.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
Never in my life
Did I think I’d live to see the day someone called The Beatles overrated, only to follow up that statement by saying that RUSH makes good tunes.

I've come to accept it..
To the non-believers. I have an acquaintance, I won’t say friend because I don’t know her very well, who on one trip when I was driving and had my CDs she said “No Beatles, I can’t stand them!” and then about a month later was dragging everyone to see Across the Universe. “Such a great musical!” I hated it.

2 songs I liked...
Joe Cocker’s cover of Come Together and Because. Those were the only two songs I thought stayed in the same mindset of the song. I guess if you want to count the guy playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the guitar as an instrumental then I’ll count it as 3.

I think the Beatles are overrated, yes.

I do think it’s fair to say they’re overrated (if you don’t think they’re the best band of all time, which is a fair thing to say, then yes, they’re overrated. I might even think they’re overrated). I’ll never understand not liking them at all though.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Thinking the Beatles are overrated is okay. Thinking Rush is a good band is perfectly acceptable.
But saying the two things in one post, as a sort of compare and contrast is never acceptable, in my never-so-humble opinion.
You know… Unless you’re Canadian or something!

Well, that's half right
The Beatles are overrated. Good, even great, at least at times. But greatest ever, as many seem to think? Crazy. In particular, their later, all-studio albums like Abbey Road and Let It Be contain considerable amounts of dreck. “The Long and Winding Road”? Yeesh.
If given the chance to see any band/performer live in its prime, the Beatles wouldn’t even be in my top 10. Stones, Hendrix, James Brown, etc…
That said, Rush sucks.
Let it Be yes...
Abbey Road? One of their greatest albums.

Yeah, that's one.
Octopus’s Garden would be another.
That whole medley thing is… OK, I guess.
My view is that the Beatles were at their best when they emphasized their considerable skills as songwriters (hence my belief that Revolver is their best). When they got into the whole “Studio Magic” thing, well, it was innovative, I suppose, but in my opinion the songs suffered.
I don’t hate those later albums, just wouldn’t normally choose them unless I wanted to hear “Here Comes the Sun” for some reason or something.
dude
go back and listen to Lennon’s later works with the beatles. So laced with heroin angst and desperation you can almost smell it. Don’t let me Down, She’s So Heavy, Come Together.

Actually,
I disagree with the “overrated” label, but I am in complete agreement with taliesin’s view of the later Beatle’s albums. I was jr. high school when “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was debuted. It may sound like simplistic pop now, but at the time it was a revelation. Compared to what was being played on the radio this marked a sea change in rock ‘n’ roll. IMO they reached their peak in the albums Revolver and Rubber Soul. I began to lose interest in them when they started issuing bloated and pounderous songs like “Come Together”. The magic was gone by then. There were still good songs mixed in, but by and large I felt then, and I still feel now, that they had lost their way.

Also...
Live? In their prime the Beatles weren’t playing live, because you couldn’t recreate the sounds they were doing in the studio live. You could have a pre-recorded track, but then perhaps there would be only Ringo playing live.
And no Zeppelin or Rush in your top 10? Pathetic!

How is my adopted son almost twice as old as I am? Nevermind...Go Omar! Warm the Bench!
Zeppelin would be in my top 10
Rush, however? No. Even if all I cared about was drums, in which case I’d go with the Police.
As to the Beatles live… in my mind their peak was Revolver, some might say Sgt. Pepper’s. Certainly the vast majority of the songs on those albums (“Day in the Life” and perhaps “Tomorrow Never Knows” the only exceptions that come quickly to mind) could have been played live. They’re great songs, and if given the opportunity to see the Beatles ca. 1966, hell yeah I’d want to see it. But compared to Hendrix in 1968 or Zeppelin in 1972? Not close.
I guess at the time...
They didn’t want to lug around a whole orchestra to play their songs in concert. Most, if not all of the songs Revolver and past had orchetral pieces in it, which is why the music couldn’t be played.

We were the high bidders for Rowand. This year, he’s shown why other teams didn’t want him as much. Trading is out.
But also, he is too good and too likely to rebound to just outright cut. We’re stuck with him. There’s worse players to be stuck with (see: Zito, Barry), but I don’t see any way Rowand’s not on the Giants next year.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
Frankly, I'm pretty okay with Zito right now
I mean, he’s probably worth 7-8m a year, not 18 or whatever the fuck – but he could be a lot worse.
He, more often than not, gives us a chance to win, and I actually expect him to get better as opposed to decline.
He’s a 4th-5th starter, and ever team needs those.

I know Zito's pitching well right now
But he was pitching well at the end of last year too, and it led to absolutely nothing for the first few months of this year. And considering that we’re about to hit the part of his contract when it gets really crazy moneywise, I don’t remotely trust him enough to say I’d rather have him and his contract than Rowand and his.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
My solution for 2009
Start next year with Tim, Matt, Sanchez, Lowry(hopefully) and Correia. Zito starts theseason in long relief.
If Lowry returns to form, deal him for a hitter at mid-season. Zito can come in and have his usual strong 2nd half. If Lowry falters in the first half, Zito can come in and have his usual strong 2nd half.
Zooperstars, they quack me up!
Zito and George W. Bush
This offseason, if I see one person on here say, “Barry Zito’s second half makes me think he can do it again over the course of a full season,” I will be forced to respond with:
There’s a little saying in Tennessee. I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says fool me once… Shame on… Shame on YOU… You fool me can’t get fooled again!

Um, Zito is valued at around 400k right now. League minimum.
That’s compared to his performance, so no, no team would pay Zito $7-8M on the free agent market right now.

And we have been seeing a string of crappy offensive teams ( for various reasons) in his last 6-8 weeks. It makes me a bit skeptical if he is more much then a #4 in the next couple years. But if he can soak up 200 innings ..eh why not.

Its remarkable how few silly contracts longer then 3 years to position players once outside of the NL West.
Purely hypnotically of coarse but …
RedSox for Lugo ( 18 MM for ‘09 & 2010 wiht a 9 MM vetesting option depending on P.A.’s) based swap once he is off the DL?
M’s for Johjima (09- 2012 for 24 MM age 33-36 seasons of a Catcher) based swap ?
Indians for a Hafner ( 09-2012 for 57MM )?
Angels in a Tori hunter (09-2012 for 71.5 MM) or Sarge Jr. ‘09 -2011 for 33MM?
If the Yanks think Cano has flamed out might make the list. ( 25 MM for 09-2011. Club option of 14MM (2MM buy out) for 2012. 15 MM club option, same buy out, 2012. But I hardly think it qualifies as a silly contract considering last 2 years.
Anyone have any other candidates?

Bad Message
Trading a free agent a year after signing him likely sends a bad message to potential future free agents. Trading a player after a down year usually doesn’t get much in return.
