Amy G
Amy G is the worst. How long until someone in the orginization has to point out to the dizzy bird that Pablo only knows about 4 phrases in barely audible english. She sits there and repeatedly asks him the same questions over and over, gets the same response, then asks him something that he just doesn't have the ability to answer. It's not just with Pablo, I mean, she flat out sucks period, but when interviewing a guy who doesn't speak the same language, maybe change the approach a bit. She makes me sick.
Sorry, hijack away...

Well, when I talked to her last week at Omar’s event, I took her as a real snob. I can see the correlation between your view on her scooping Pablo’s English and my interaction with her. I don’t see the reason why she’s so snooty, she’s not all that any way.

Conisdering what the G in Amy G stands for, would it be too much to ask that in a game dominated by Spanish-speaking players, that we have a sideline reporter that can converse in Spanish, asking questions and relaying the responses to the fans in English. Although that wouldn’t even help Amy G because even if she did know Spanish, she still doesn’t know baseball and I think that’s the reason we’re all here bashing her. I understand the need for a pretty face but is it too much to ask that she understands the game she’s covering. I swear by the end of the season she’s going to talk about how many “points” the Giants have scored.

I’m also pretty sad about the lack of Spanish-speaking reporters/writers out there. My next goal is to begin Spanish courses so I can speak to these guys directly. I gotta learn enough by April 2009 to talk to Angel Villalona when he joins the SJ Giants!

I remember being really pissed off because Lisa Winston(?) only interviewed American players in the Futures Game. 30 million Americans speak Spanish – it shouldn’t be hard to get a translator, not to mention an actual reporter who speaks Spanish.

Yeah Lisa does not speak Spanish. She said she actually got Sergio Romo to translate for her in the AFL last year. He was happy to oblige.
We discussed the lack of minorities in journalism in my journalism class last night. Newsrooms and news staffs are still ridiculously white. Just thinking real quick like I can only think of one minority on the Sporting Green staff; Janny Hu, the Warriors’ beat writer. The rest are whites.
I admit I F’ed up by not embracing my initial Spanish language abilities, but I’m going to correct that after this semester is over. It’s the least I can do, to reach out to half the baseball playing population out there.

I agree about the lack of minorities in journalism, but even if you don’t have a Spanish speaking reporter, why can’t you just get a translator?

If/when I interview Angel Villalona next year, I will request a translator or ask if I can bring one with. It’s all about getting the story any way you can (within ethical reason). I don’t understand why one wouldn’t see it as such.

My brother got an earful of it this weekend. Even he agrees she needs to do one of two things: get smarter or get hotter. She’s not pretty enough to be so dumb. Plus bitch stole my glasses! She needs to get her own schtick. I’ve been wearing the librarian glasses for six years now.
Though I can’t really fault her for not getting much out of an interviewee. One recent interview I did was not so grate aktully because the guy just spoke in cliches. There’s not a lot you can do if the guy speaking to you gives you so little to work with.

I could go into my thesis-length argument on how women like Amy G ruin it for the rest of us, the smart, sharp, informed women in sports media, and how the sideline reporter position itself ruins it for all of us, but I’m really mellow from my vacation and feeling less misanthropic than usual. Plus it’s a bunch of politcs and feminist rhetoric that most people don’t care about anyway. You asking the question of why we’re upset about Amy Guiterrez points that out pretty clearly. Don’t take it as me being angry with you for it, because I am not angry with you.

I suppose I’ll start with the scourge that is the sideline reporter position. Men are employed as blabbermouths on the sidelines too. But when you take women as a whole in sports media, the highest concentration of jobs filled by members of the Double X Chromosome Club are in the sideline reporter milieu. It’s the bottom of the food chain with the inanity and general superfluous nature of the job. Nobody likes them. Nobody wants to listen to them. It’s a drag and everyone knows it.
So my problem with the position and the high number of women working as sideline reporters can be summarized via a quote from an episode of The Boondocks: “Is this it? Is this what I got all those ass whoopin’s for?!” In the episode Martin Luther King Jr. did not die, and he woke up in a post 9/11 world observing his culture and his people gone completely to shit, beside himself by the horrid nightmare he has to face, and I feel the same way when I look at other women in sports media working in the dregs. Is that truly it? This is the best we can do?
We should be striving for more, striving for better things. Lesley Visser was the first woman to broadcast in the booth on a Monday Night Football broadcast. Susan Slusser of the SF Chronicle is a member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. These are the positions we should be filling. These opportunities are the ones given to us when the first women dealt with scads of sexism, abuse, and other indignities in the 1970s and 1980s for just doing their jobs. They went through hell because they loved the trade, and they gave future generations of sports-loving, gifted ladies a chance to become even better than they were just by standing up and saying, “I’m here, now answer my goddamn questions and keep your penis out of this.”
And we thank those women by reporting on inane bullshit and smiling like vapid twats on camera. Congratulations!
I mean, maybe I’m a mutant because I’m the Type A personality from hell and I must be better than everyone at everything and my ego is humongous thus I have too much ambition for my own good, but come on. We can be better than the cards we are dealt. It will always be difficult for women in the business. But nothing worth having comes easy.

All of this
Basically, I think a lot of places still have the same things Susan Fornoff faced trying to cover the A’s 20 years ago. Professional sports is male dominated and often very sexist toward women.
Some have done a great job of breaking down some of the barriers, Susan Slusser among them, but when TV stations go for the bimbos that look good and don’t really know a whole lot, it just makes it harder for the people who really do know all the small things to break in without being looked at like some blight just because they have a pair of boobs.

I don’t disagree with anything you say, although I think you might be off base in thinking of her job in journalistic terms. IMO, it’s more of a “media personality” job than sportswriter. I’d say her job is more in common with Renel than Baggs.
My point was that the personal attacks people throw at her are kinda lame.
I see her job as pretty thankless; you’re either talking to players/coaches who don’t want to talk to you, in the stands with fans who just want to mug for the camera, or shilling for some business interest like “Build A Bear”…all while trying to look like it’s fun. I don’t think Amy G is particularly great, but I have a tough time imagining anyone doing much with that role.

I don’t think that it’s off base to think of the job in journalistic terms. I think the job itself is clearly outside those lines, but in terms of a career arc, I think it’s a legitimate problem that women in sports media and journalism are being pushed to these liminal areas almost as a requisite step in the process that so visibly doesn’t exist for men.

I’d like to see more women striving to be the Andy Baggarly type in this scenario. My rant up there was born from the anger I feel that I am cast in the Baggarly mold and I see almost no other female around me going for it or doing it. I’m angry that too many women accept the shitty “sports media personality” job and don’t even try for more or better.
But I will level with you on the personal attacks front. Sometimes I feel like I should knock it off and just call a truce with her and her type, because we’re all the same and we should stick together like some garbled rhetoric from Thelma and Louise. See, I have a heart…sometimes.

Just showing a passion for the game would be a great start. Amy G strikes me as someone who couldn’t tell you the difference between a tailing fastball and a cutter.
