OT: Olympics 2008
Because watching that Opening Ceremony is about 10002939x less painful than watching Barry Zito pitch. Because discussing the Olympic team is much less depressing than discussing the atrocity that we see almost every day. I know the ceremony was probably a big piece of Chinese propaganda, but I have to say, it was quite impressive.
That amount of manpower put into bringing glory to a country and an event is really something that you don't really see anymore these days. I remember studying Art History in High School and wondering why no one really makes monuments for the sake of glory anymore. Everything we build has a practical purpose--an event this big, all to amaze and impress, was refreshing in a way (though my modern, practical sensibilities cringe at the "waste").
That's not the reason I'm writing this FanPost, though--it's so that we can discuss the games in general. Honestly, I haven't done my research and I don't know who or what to look out for. All I know is that there's a 40-something year old woman who has about 5x the muscle mass that I do. So, I'm asking you sports fans, what are you looking out for these Olympics? Redemption for the U.S. basketball team? Medals for the Chinese? NATE SCHIERHOLTZ?!

I love the Olympics. Every year I throw myself into it. I’m really looking forward to the judo and boxing competitions. I know jack shit about both sports but I plan on getting into both for sportswriting next year at university. And of course I can’t wait for baseball.
My love for the Games is simple. We’ll always live in a chaotic, tumultous, fucked up world. Politics will always be there to cast shadows on our lives. But for two weeks every two years, we can put it all aside and just play games. We can see the best athletes in the world compete. It takes a lot to organize a world of chaos into a series of games. That is a pretty moving thing.

The flagbearers last night weren’t all competing athletes in this year’s Games. They probably chose Pacquiao because of his enormous significance to his nation. A good call if you ask me.

Olympic boxing scoring
They score actual punches. That’s why the gloves are multi-colored, because punches must be landed with the front of the glove to be scored.

The Olympics have never been apolitical as much as we’d like to believe otherwise. Jesse Owens’ sprints had a great deal of symbolic impact and the same will be true of whatever hero emerges from these Games
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."

I mean more in terms of just getting together for two weeks. Not being so far apart. Owens in 1936, the Black Power Salute in 1968, and on a smaller scale, when hockey added women’s teams in 1998 and when boxing will allow women to compete in 2012. Those are big political moments as well, but I see those as the good ones.
Of course there are the bad ones too. Munich in 1972 was a terrible thing. I never will say the Olympics are perfect. But it’s where sport comes first. Maybe I put too much stock in the sacred nature of that because sports got me through the darkest times in my life.

Quick question
Boxing and Judo eh? Have you the stomach or desire to write about MMA by any chance? If you can get past the obvious differences between it and both boxing and the martial arts, it’s a wonderfully technical sport where it pays to be well rounded and competent in boxing, grappling, and jujitsu. Only reason I bring it up is because there’s a great blog on this very network that’s one of the best places out there for MMA info. Oh, and because this is a regional hot-spot for the stuff. Stockton, Sac-town, and San Jose all have reputable gyms with champions training at them every day of the week.
Be sure to check out http://www.bloodyelbow.com/ when you’ve got a chance. The main dude over there runs a really tight ship over there and he’s always updating the site with new content.

Well I got that the first name there is Darvish Yu but the others I can’t get. My Japanese is woefully rudimentary. Though I’m pretty sure one of those names is Tanaka Masahiro. They have a great team and they’re my favorite for the gold. Cuba is always strong and I expect Korea to make a strong showing. Also: don’t count out Taiwan. Yea fuck you IOC, it’s Taiwan, not Chinese Taipei.

The other names are Fujikawa Kyuji (Hanshin Tigers closer), Uehara Koji (Yomiuri Giants ace), Yano Akihiro (Hanshin Tigers catcher) and Nishioka Tsuyoshi (Chiba Lotte Marines shortstop).
Tanaka Masahiro is a very talented pitcher and a bright spot on a truly terrible team, much like Tim Lincecum is for our Giants.

Yep, Uehara is a veteran presence on the team. Sabean is creaming his jeans at the idea. Ha ha. I saw Uehara pitch in the WBC and I was very impressed.
I just LOVE Darvish. For a hundred reasons. I love that he can throw hard, something that was a favorite point of contention for people who pooh-pooh Japanese baseball. And I love that he’s not the only one who has velocity. I especially love that he’s part of this new wave of mixed-race Japanese sports stars. I read something about how at Koshien they have Japanese-Filipinos, Japanese-Brazilians, Zainichi, et al competing in the tournament. Being a mixed ethnicity myself I just get a kick out of the possibilities out there.

We may be seeing some of those players in the near future. I know of one in the minors of an MLB team. The Braves signed 1B Ryohei Shimabukuro in 2006 out of high school in Osaka. He’s currently playing rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League. His father is Japanese and his mother is Argentine. If I recall correctly, his mother met his father in Argentina when he was staying at her family’s home as part of a homestay program. I remember it being a big deal and all over the news in Osaka.

Actually.....
F*ck The IOC is appropriate. Baseball and Softball are out of the “Games” until at least 2016. There will have to be a vote to reinstate them. This was the first time the IOC eliminated any sports from the Summer Games in 69 years. It was done with a “secret vote” of the the IOC during a Singapore meeting in 2005. Why are they out ? You’d have to ask the IOC President Jacques Rogge.
I would guess that part of reason is because US Womens team has outscored their opponets 51-1 since play began in 1996. There have also been complaints from Cuba regarding the Status of MLB players in the games.

Why shouldn’t snowboarding and BMX be in the Olympics? Compared to rubbish like dressage.
Because they weren’t in the ancient olympics? A whole shitton of modern sports weren’t in the ancient olympics. Because they weren’t in Pierre Coubertin’s Olympics? Should we go back to the days of strict amateurism? Should we only allow trust fund babies to win olympics gold medals?

What's next?
Women’s boxing, hopefully. Women being allowed to compete in every event that men can compete.
Unlike the good old days, when for their “safety”, and to “protect their health”, the IOC banned them from a whole host of events, like weightlifting, middle to long distance running, pole vaulting, just to name a few.
And also whatever sport humans over the world want to compete in, including yes, paintball, as opposed to sports like dressage, where only a limited elite few can participate in.

I think it’s mostly the rule of thumb that sports blog + politics =/= good.
But also I think it’s worth respecting that Natto is extremely culturally aware, fairly culturally sensitive, and probably knows better than most of us how any conversation that starts with the words “China sucks” is probably not going to include either the most intelligent or the least offensive things that have ever been said.
We really do need to leave it alone, and we really do need to refrain from being instigatory about it.

I hate getting ready to watch some event, and then I hear somewhere else that it was twelve hrs ago and they tell you who won.

I’m currently in beijing for the olympics and I’ve been there once in the past(in 2005), I honestly wish that some facets of the US were run more like China, such as the transportation and miniscule crime rate in Urban areas. However I could do without the partially censored TV stations, bad air, and pedestrians having to yield to cars and bikes

I’ve been torn about the games being in China and I’m normally not all that into pageantry, but the opening ceremonies were an amazing site to behold. As Costas said, it was beyond superlatives.
My favorite things were the light up drums, the people walking around the big globe, the ocean sequence, the huge LED scroll on the floor and the little 9-year-old earthquake hero.
The lighting of the torch was cool, but nothing will top the flaming arrow.

It was beautifully orchestrated. I just can’t believe the precision with the lit up drums, the naval sequence, and the countdown with the kanji and the western numbers. Plus as someone said above, that little boy: gamer.
I could do without Bob Costas though.

Another Olympic thought
Am I the only one who prefers the events where the Olympics is the pinnacle of the sport? I find myself not really caring about things like tennis, baseball, boxing and basketball.
I prefer the spotlight to be on things that most people only care about four years like volleyball, gymnastics, track and field and swimming.
One other thought: Am I the only one who was wondering during the “parade of nations” whether every female athlete in these games is a mega-babe or if the camerapeople were just really good and focusing on the ones that were. Dear lord, I’ve never seen so many beautiful women in one place.

Female Athletes
I think it’s a combination of eagle-eyed camera people and really good looking athletes. Sometimes great athletes can be horrendous looking (Carlos Tevez, anybody?), but for some reason the genetics worked out just fine for these olympics. Also, they showed the flag-bearer for almost all of the countries, so they probably wanted a decent-looking person to represent their country to the rest of the world.

I love baseball and softball (why else would I be on this site), but I can understand why the Olympics doesn’t want those sports in the Olympics. Softball is pretty much a free gold for the US. Baseball does not feature the best players in the world, and the disparities in talent among some of the countries are so great that there is a mercy rule (10+ runs after 7 innings).
Perhaps if MLB somehow allowed its players into the Olympics, baseball could see a worldwide boom akin to the NBA’s eruption over the past sixteen years. With a whole bunch of marketable young stars coming up – Lincecum, D. Wright, Jose Reyes, half of the Devil Rays, etc – the MLB might be wise to try and open themselves up to the world else the NBA monopolize the world market.
And don’t hate on badminton. I’ve never touched a racket outside of PE, but men’s doubles is probably the most action-packed event of the Olympics (if you don’t believe me, youtube the final at Athens).

Early morning thought process
Taking softball out of the Games because one team dominates is a stupid reason. If anything it’s a challenge to other countries, to say, “hey come beat us.”
And like I said upthread I thought the IOC took baseball out because of the PED stuff in the States and the Olympics are imposing tougher and tougher doping policies. That would make sense, since the players selected for the event are still subject to MLB testing rules and subsequent penalties for testing positive.
Then the IOC would take softball out to wrap up the neat little package because almost all men’s events have corresponding women’s events in the Games now (except for women’s ski jumping, for some reason that’s just TOO DANGEROUS OMG FOR WIMMINS), and surely we can’t have a standalone women’s event! Synchronized swimming? Wait where are you taking me…is that chloroform?
The whole thing is just poorly thought out. That the IOC make the decision in an under the table way just makes it more shady too.

No
The decision to cut baseball from the Games was made in 2005, when minor leaguers were still getting busted for using, before the Mitchell Report (which solved nothing), before MLB removed the finger from its collective nose and made a move to show they gave a damn about PED use and testing in the sport. The standards for testing and punishments weren’t strict enough to stand up to the standards of the Games. That display wasn’t enough for the IOC to consider the sport in its Games, thus they dropped it.
That’s my theory, anyway.
