Lincecum and Rush
So, if you didn't know, there is an epic Rush debate going on in the McCovey Chronicles Prospect Night Thread. As I was listening to Tom Sawyer at my desk twidling my thumbs due to the slowness of the day, I decided to rewrite the song about Timmy. It couldn't just sit in that thread, I had to post it.
A modern-day warrior
who throws 95,
Today’s starting pitcher,
Mean mean pride.
Though he looks as if he nine,
He’ll get you swinging every time.
His windup, mechanics so fine,
Might as well just grab some pine.
Lin-ce-cum
You know this kids got the pedigree
Been working on his stuff since he was three.
Modern day legend, he’s no myth
You just cant hit him, catch the drift?
His curve is, his curve is,
sharp and it buckles knees,
come on, have another try….
Todays Nolan Ryan,
He throws strikes on you,
And the zone he invades
He waves “bye bye” to you.
No, his arm is never spent
so Barbieri likes to vent,
To be the greatest, his one intent,
He'll blow the mustache off Jeff Kent,
Go Tim-my
Yea his ERA is under three
Best pitcher alive, we’d all agree.
Gets Martin, Pujols and Holiday,
Lookin' like children, come and play.
The league is, the league is,
on its respective knees,
Go ahead, Connor Jackson, cry…
Exit the warrior,
better hire a lawyer
He throws strikes on you,
leaves with 13 K’s,
He gets right through, recievin’ Cy Young’s like bouquets.
Slow Day at work... and I'm pretty proud of that.

umm

yeah i heard about unforgiven III. I’ll wait until Death Magnetic comes out before I make my decision, but it feels like they’ve just mailed things in at this point and are just trying to milk every dollar possible.
That being said, ...AJFA and MOP is some of the best compilation of music I have ever heard.

IMO, MOP was the last listenable album. KEA and RTL were also great, but in different ways. Maybe you had to be there… ;-)

+1 for S&M
But I’m a whore for orchestral music anyway. The bassoon solo at the beginning of Battery is head explodingly awesome.

That movie

So apparently when I saw therm at the Mason Jar in Phowenix in the early Eighties I saw the pre – Metallica Newsted?
I’ve never unwrapped my vinyl KEA but AJFA got a lot of rotation. My girlfriend at the time used to get annoyed when I vocally imitated Hammett’s intro to “Shortest Straw”.
There’s a book called “Johnny Got His Gun”. It’s written from the point of view of a WW1 soldier who…well , I’ll give you “One” guess…heavy reading.

we could delve into why prog-rock is soulless music but its a lot easier to spurt out rush sucks. To me, Getty Lee is as brutal and grating as a lead singer could be. Its a matter of taste but i can’t imagine my brain firing in a way where rush would even be palatable.

Good Giants reference...
But their mainstreams songs all sound strikingly similar to me. I dont hate the artists, but I’m over the RHCP all up on my radio biz.
Funny note: I was going out with this really strikingly gorgeous girl, we were driving home for dinner after our third date, things were going great. Snow came up on the radio, and I made a giant “uuuuuuuughhhhh”, reminiscent of a Castillo GIDP. She said “what, you dont like the Chili Peppers?” And I gave the, “Well, they definitely aren’t my favorite”
Turns out she had been to like the last 5 RHCP concerts in the area, including a trip to PHI and NY to see them play on consecutive nights. Lets just say I dropped her off on the porch, and she never called me again. FU RHCP!

RHCP
I don’t listen to them much, because the radio pretty much plays them to death, but to me it’s amazing that a band that’s been around for about 25 years is still selling records like crazy to teenage kids. How many bands have stayed so successful for so long??

Radiohead, The Doors and Pink Floyd are all pretty good when you’re on a lot of drugs. Radiohead is the only one that stands up decently while sober.

I think
it’s a function of your age. The older you are, the more music (and eras of music) you’ve been exposed to, the better able you are to hear influences from the past.
No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.
I don’t think that holds, especially when you consider a lot of the various drone and ‘noise’ albums that have been produced this decade. You could say that for some Black Metal albums (surprisingly enough), and some funeral doom and neo-psych (particularly out of Japan and Finland).
As for the drone music, sure one can refer to the Taj Mahal Travelers, and their use of ancient eastern music-but three is certainly work of this decade is significantly different, if not entirely new. Nothing is entirely new, but thats a false standard to hold.
Very nice job
I saw Rush live for both the “Power Windows” and “Roll the Bones” tours, so there will be no hate from me. Just love.
No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.
you either like them or hate them
with rush there is not in between. rush fans are very defensive, trust me i am as big a rush fan as there is. where else can you find a band that has been together for over 30 years, every album has gone at least gold (i think only second to like the beatles or elvis or somebody like that) and most have gone platinum. but they are an acquired taste. rush is not your typical sellout band, meaning they don’t write songs just to sell albums. they are as appreciative to their fans as a band gets. they continue to strive to write better and better songs. they don’t write stuff for radio or MTV. you won’t find them on your local alternative rock station. they put out a new album and you wouldn’t even know it. but they continue to rock for 3 hrs every show!!!! neil still is one of the greatest drummers of all time, that is not arguable. i am not saying he is the best, but he is top 5 and that is saying something considering the company he would keep.
geddy’s voice is, again, you love or hate it. personally, i like the screaming. today everybody wants to sing deep and raspy. hell even our lead singer has that. its ok, but geddy is in a world of his own. alex is one of the most underrated guitarists. his music writing is underestimated and under appreciative. if you don’t like the opening to the spirit of radio (which got me hooked) then nothing will please you.
bottom line is you won’t get an argument to be a rush fan. if aren’t by now, then you won’t be. but to say they just flat out “suck” then to me you just like “popular” music. i can respect anybody for writing music. it is difficult. and today music, like sports, is such a business that, again like sports, the business gets in the way of the pure enjoyment of the sport or the song. that fact that somebody has written a beautiful piece of music gets lost because it is not “radio worthy” or it won’t sell CDs or MP3s. to me that is sad. music and sports should be for fun, not money. save the money for the oil companies.

what they said i mean....
i need to work on thinking before i post haha
Rafael Rodriguez: Pretty young!
actually
I am completely lukewarm on them. I think they are good considering the attention they’ve gathered though the years, and a decent late prog band, but blow out of the water by some of the late sixties, early seventies european prog, and some krautrock (though it isn’t fair to compare them to a krautrock band). They are good, but not particularly brilliant or creative; just solid.
that is, ‘blown out of the water’.
(you are right though, that were someone to say they flat out suck and mean it, they are probably a top 40 fan).
because this is the direct opposite of Rush and nothing on top 40 radio can qualify as such
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."
They have all that technical ability, but to my ears, they make music that is profoundly dull and boring. All the technical ability in the world does not automatically make a band great or even good. I believe I gave Rush a very fair chance. I wanted to like them, I felt like I should like them, but there was nothing about them that ever managed to appealed to me. I strongly dislike listening to their music. They bore the hell out of me. Therefore, to me, they flat out suck.
It’s my personal opinion and I understand that there are many of those who would disagree with me. I was never presenting my opinion as fact or anything (come on, Rush fans just get so defensive, it’s fun to rile them up a bit).
And I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that if you don’t think Rush is any good, you must only listen to Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers or whatever other crap is permeating the airwaves these days. There’s a wide variety of music out there, it’s not a choice between RUSH or Top 40. I don’t think I listen to anything that could be qualified as top 40. I even used to listen to a LOT of prog, but try as I might, Rush never came close to appealing to me at the same level as King Crimson or what have you. (I don’t like prog much anymore though.)
That said, I think Geddy is pretty cool for being all into baseball and shit. And YYZ is a pretty cool song.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I’m more or less with you, though I think you are using ‘flat out suck’ indiscriminately. I’m also more or less in the same boat, as I tend to find them boring, and the interesting moments usually don’t justify the whole for me. But I can see what they are trying to do, and in part they pull it off-moments again- and they can clearly play—all of which keeps me from saying they are bad or worse.
My problem is with the ‘They bore the hell out of me. therefore to me they flat out suck. The ‘to me’ makes the statement go in two different directions: you can either elide the ‘to me’ and take the statement as an aesthetic judgment (which, on most accounts, is about the object, not you); or focus on the ‘two me’, which reduces to preference. Ultimately, the distinction is collapsed, and preference is presented as aesthetic judgment—which is an opinion of fact (the object).
This is where it isn’t ridiculous to suggest that if one thinks they suck, they are likely a top 40 person: suck is in this case an aesthetic judgment of the object. The musicianship is good, there is an idea to it-and it isn’t foolish-, and they are trying to do something interesting (whether or not they succeed), they are somewhat creative (relative to much that is out there, though by an absolute measure they aren’t much so). If these and similar things are are contested, it is likely by a top 40 fan.
That is what I was getting on about, at least.
I think you’re being too formalistic here (structuralistic? whatever the hell the one is where things fall into neat categories).
You make the very convenient distinction that preference = aesthetic judgement, but this isn’t really true at all except in the most base sort of way. The problem is that preference IS an aesthetic judgement, but it is NOT aesthetic judgement itself.
A square is a rectangle, for instance, but a square does not represent the totality of rectangles.
Your deconstruction is flawed on this level, in my opinion. You see a square (jponry’s individual preference), and you interpret it as the concept of the rectangle itself (the whole of her aesthetic capacity). In reality, as I see it, there is a square (jponry’s individual preference), and it exists as a single actualization of the concept of the rectangle (a single judgement derived from the whole of jponry’s aesthetic capacity), when in fact there are countless unique ways for the concept of the rectangle to be actualized, many of which are not squares.
Analogy over.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
by howtheyscored on Aug 9, 2008 3:32 AM PDT up reply actions
Neither Formalist, or Structuralist,
actually, you misread me as I am saying something similar else (the distinction I made in is service of distinguishing the act, and that which is acted upon.
And the attempted analogy based on the relation of a square and a rectangle doesn’t apply. The distinction I made has nothing to do with jponry’s particular taste, in minutiae, or at the level of the whole. Rather, the distinction I made is purely a matter of reference: I j think jpornry is unintentionally collapsing a valid distinction (that between what one ‘likes’-which is typically tied to preference rather than a qualitative hierarchy-which an aesthetic judgment such as ‘what it seen to be good’ is. Of course the two can coincide, but they do not have to: I think the pixies are a ‘good’ bad, however I do not like them, and do not enjoy their music.
ack, I really need to proofread.
should start:
Neither Formalist (usually an art term) nor Structuralist (typically a mid 20th century element of French philosophy),
Actually, you misread me, as I am saying something similar to your second paragraph, and the distinction I am making is something else entirely.
Yeah, after I wrote it I meat to erase the first line because I knew it meant nothing, but I forgot to.

Freaking ROCKED, dude. You can make a rectangle out of a polygon with two sides of 2 and two sides of 1, too. Peart!
I mean seriously, dude, LOL OVERANALYZING MY HATRED OF RUSH.

Great Work Angel
I think that was the most boring thing I’ve partially read in my life.
But I applaud your manlove for the enchanter.

Rush is banned from Giants baseball
Don’t blame me, Herges ruined it for everyone.

Why not the intro to Working Man?

Okay.
Here are the rules of this site:
Rush is optional. I like them, but I understand why some don’t.
Radiohead is not optional. You love them.
Red Hot Chili Peppers absolutely suck. Anthony Kiedis is a tone-deaf gibbon. Frusciante and Flea can come up with interesting things, but the vocals ruin it all.
Metallica: Kill ‘em All – A, Ride the Lightning- A, Master of Puppets – A++, ...And Justice For All – A, Black Album – B-, everything else- F-
Flotsam and Jetsam: Meh. But Newstead also played with Voivod, which is super cool. I have Angel Rat in my car right now.
Please conform your musical tastes to mine, or you risk total bannination. Thank you.
Your musical tastes are very white. :)
I have set Dave Roberts free; if he comes back, it was meant to be.
See Grant, I told you a token Ice Cube reference wouldn’t improve your street cred.

Nah. I’m pretty well-rounded. I was just referencing the bands mentioned in this thread. I grew up listening to Too Short, Ice-T, and N.W.A., and I’m still pretty big into hip hop.
From Abba to Zappa, and all points in between.

I gets rec'd again?
Yay. I’m starting to feel like an actual part of this blog. Thanks.
I have to say, you writers on McC have gotten me through alot of things, When my Grandpa (who was a Seal BTW) passed away, I really had no one to talk with about the Giants (My dad is a huuuuge fan (he named me after Matt Nokes and my brother after Robbie Thompson) but he’s too busy to really discuss Giants nuances). I miss him (Gpa), and you all really help fill the void. I still have his Seal’s jersey too, it survived the moth balls…. maybe I’ll wear it to the McC night next saturday at the SJ Giants game.
So in closing, thanks.

Having a grandpa who’s an ex-Seal is cool. That would be chick magnetism.
Admitting your a Rush fanboy, that’s an old standby geek admission. That would be chick repellent. Trust me – I know.

Geddy Lee can't sing anymore
Unless he was really, really suffering from a virus or something, when he was on the Colbert Report he had no kind of range at all. Toast.
However, Neil Peart still has many, many drums and is part octopus.

What Rush Means to Me
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should.
what a retarded statement
that basically sums up all Top 40 music. most acts these days don’t write their own music. hell american idol has made gagillions of dollars to prove that fact. i challenge anybody to pick up a bass and play it like geddy lee. or sit behind the neil’s drumkit and not make a mistake for a HR show. for a three-piece band they are as loud as any other three-piece. i realize loud does not equal good or great, but you can still hear every snare, high-hat, tom, bass line, guitar riff, you name it. of course geddy doesn’t sing the best anymore, he’s been doing it for over 30YEARS. but mick jagger has proven that you don’t have to be a great singer to be successful. the stones are one of the most overrated, overplayed bands in history. just listen to the song “shattered”. saying shattered for 4mins a good song this does not make.
and those who don’t like geddy in the early days sure loved robert plant of zeppelin. both high-pitched singers, one loved by everybody, the other mocked. also, to others who have posted, my statement about only liking Top 40 hits, was based solely around no appreciation for the art that is writing music. i may not like bands, but i respect the hell out of anybody. try to put a good vocal harmony to a bass doing one thing, the guitar doing something else and neil’s eccentric drumming. then put some lyrics behind it that mean something. whether it is about an ayn rand book, tragedies in your life that are tough to deal with, and for the most part stay away from the obvious political references. its not easy.
if you don’t like their music, i am ok with that, but to not have any major radio play, be from canada and have been in the top 10 of total albums sold WORLDWIDE and do it over a 30year span, that is freaking impressive. don’t like the music, but respect the band.

i'm not a fan
at least not of anything they’ve done in 30 years. I just think it’s funny that you berate someone above for insulting Rush, then you do the exact same thing to the Stones.

Wow, that was awesome!
Fuck going onto blogs just to declare a band to be shitty. That was an absolutely awesome satire. Well done!
I was worried for a second you meant Limbaugh and I might have to test my Timmah fandom to the very limit.
