AA: Connecticut defeated Portland 7-2
(finishing game suspended on July 23rd)
Connecticut: SS Kyle Haines: 2 for 3, BB, SF, CS
Connecticut: 1B Adam Witter: 0 for 2, 2 BB, HBP, SO, E
Connecticut: RHP Brooks McNiven: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--1 WP
Connecticut: LHP Paul Oseguera: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 K
Connecticut: LHP Jason Waddell: 2.0 IP, 4 K
Haines was one of five Defenders with two hits each, but he and Witter, who had not hits, were the only Defenders to reach base three times.
McNiven started the game, and approximately two weeks later Oseguera came in relief with the bases loaded. McNiven is no longer on the Defenders' roster as he is in China for the Canadian Olympic team. Oseguera stranded all three runners and pitched much better than in his previous two appearances, during which he allowed 7 ER, although officially this appearance counts as happening a couple games before his other two most recent appearances. Waddell struck out four of the six batters he faced for his first save.
AA: Connecticut tied with Portland 0-0, suspended in 4th inning
(with the game scheduled to be resumed this evening)
Connecticut: CF Antoan Richardson: 1 for 1, SB
Connecticut: RHP Joe Martinez: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Richardson had singled in his only plate appearance and stolen his 28th base.
Martinez was very effective in this start, allowing just three singles. He had an 8/2 GO/FO line.
A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 4-2
San Jose: SS Sharlon Schoop: 2 for 4, HR, GiDP
San Jose: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
San Jose: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 1.0+ IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB
San Jose: RHP Danny Otero: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 K
Visalia: RHP Dallas Buck: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR, 1 HB, 2 WP
Schoop, the lone Giant with two hits, raised his AVG above .250 and connected for his 6th HR.
Pucetas maintained his spotless W-L record, improving to 9-0. He also raised his K/BB ratio above 4.00. Joaquin pitched a scoreless 8th inning, before failing to retire either batter he faced in the 9th inning. Otero allowed both of those inherited runners to score as he allowed three hits, but he was still credited with his 9th save. The D'backs' Buck made his return to the Cal League following Tommy John surgery a year ago.
A-: Augusta defeated Greensboro 10-5
(after leading 10-0 after eight innings)
Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 5, HR, 2B, 2 SO, E
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 2 for 5, 2B, SO
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 2 for 3, 2 2B
Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 4 for 5, 2 2B
Greensboro: 3B Matt Dominguez: 2 for 4, 2B
Augusta: RHP T.J. Brewer: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Noonan, Neal and Baker each had two XBHs for the GreenJackets, including Noonan's 6th HR. Villalona had one of the GreenJackets' other three XBHs, and Neal and Villalona both have 22 doubles now this season. Baker's four hits paced the GreenJackets' fourteen-hit attack. Dominguez, whom the Marlins selected 12th overall a year ago, also had two hits, raising the 19-year-old's season line to .285/.346/.419 through 253 AB.
Brewer continues to pitch very effectively, having allowed just 5 ER in 40.1 IP over his last eight appearances (six starts). During that time, his peripheral stats are 26 H, 11 BB and 32 K. Clark, who has made seventeen starts this year, made his second relief appearance of the year, with his other relief appearance coming back in April. This may be a move to accommodate the GreenJackets' six-man rotation where one of the starters is used out of the bullpen after an off-day.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Boise 7-5 (11 innings)
Salem-Keizer: 1B-3B Mike Loberg: 3 for 6, 2 SO, GiDP, E
Salem-Keizer: 2B Jose Flores: 3 for 4, 2 BB, PO
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.0 IP, 1 H
Loberg had his streak of four straight games with a HR snapped, but he extended his streak of multi-hit games to four. This is the first I remember him playing a position other than first base defensively. He and Flores, who reached base five times, accounted for nearly half of the Volcanoes' thirteen hits as they raised their respective AVGs to .323 and .278.
Loree had his least effective start of the year (over ten starts), at least in terms of earned runs, with 4 ER being a new season high that raised his ERA to 2.47. Quirarte had his string of three straight appearances with multiple strikeouts snapped but he still earned his 9th save with a perfect 11th inning.
A-: Giants defeated A's 3-0 (5 innings)
(game completed early due to rain)
Scottsdale: LF Ben Woodbury: 2 for 3, 2B, SB
Scottsdale: RF Ryan Mantle: 2 for 2, SF
Scottsdale: RHP Jorge Bucardo: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K--2 WP
With two hits each, Woodbury and Mantle had as many hits as the rest of the team combined, raising their respective AVGs to .360 and .324.
Bucardo allowed a fair number of baserunners (OBP against close to .350 in this start), but he pitched five shutout innings in the first complete game of his pro career. He also set a career high with 7 K.
DSL: Giants defeated Yankees #1 19-4
Dominincan: 2B Julio Izturis: 3 for 7, HR
Dominican: DH Sundrendy Windster: 2 for 6, HR
Dominican: RHP Edward Concepcion: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K--1 HB, 2 WP
Windster (19.5 y.o.) connected for his league-leading 9th HR, while Izturis (17.11 y.o.) connected for his 1st pro HR. The speedy Izturis is still without a triple in his pro career, although he has 55 SB in 107 games. Concepcion (19.10 y.o.) had one of less effective starts, raising his ERA to an even 4.00, but he still improved his W-L record to 7-1 after a dozen starts.

Good to see Pucetas have a nice start, he might be my current favorite finesse pitcher in the Giants system. I would have probably ranked him behind Snyder and Tanner before this season started. I’d have to think about that again.
I wonder if Joe Martinez will make it to Fresno this year? Or maybe even as a call up? His GB tendencies are nice.

At the beginning of the year, I really liked Oseguera. But with his injury I might be leaning toward Pucetas. I’m glad to see the Snyder hype dying down a bit around here. I’m rooting for him to succeed, but he sure was getting a lot of noise for an pitcher in the the mid 80s dominating in the lower minors.

That should be

Crazy line for Loberg!
Also, how on earth does Sharlon Schoop have 6 bombs? Are they letting him use an aluminum bat?

Schoop
He’s bulked up quite a bit over the past couple of years.

Yep
He gave me a AZL card from 3 yrs ago and he looked like a very skinny 12 year old. He came to the house last year and got a good chuckle looking at it again.

that's awesome!
If you ever get a chance, Rich, i’d love to hear about how you got involved with “fostering” ballplayers, and any associated stories. I’m curious about how all that works.
thanks!

If anybody has been paying attention to the Royals prospects...
Mike Moustakas is on an absolute tear of epic montser proportions.
I want.
Would Sanchez be enough to land the Greek God? I’m thinking no, but possibly the addition of another prospect not named Bumgarner, Alderson, Villalona, RafRod, Noonan, Posey or Gillaspie.

I don’t think the Royals are really interested in trading him at this point.

I'd agree with that...
I just see 3B as a position of glaring need… Moustakos is awesome, Royals need ALOT to be competitive… I guess I might have stretched a little to far though.

Gillaspie Update
not sure if anyone saw this yesterday:
I hadn’t heard specifically, but it looks like he signed a 2008 contract (for slot $) and will be in Arizona next week to start his pro career and could move up before the season ends.
Wednesday’s signing of Gillaspie (for a reported $975,000), who was selected 37th overall, gives the third baseman time to begin his career in the Arizona rookie league this week and join one of the Giants’ other minor-league affiliates shortly thereafter.
Also, on the other signings, Sabean had some fortuitous words for the process.
Bobby Evans, director of player personnel and the Giants’ chief negotiator, wouldn’t characterize contract talks with Posey’s representatives other than to say they’re “ongoing,” but general manager Brian Sabean said a resolution could “possibly” come down to the Aug. 15 deadline. It’s the second year the deadline has been in effect. Previously, players had to be signed before the first day of college or return to the draft the following year. Either way, signing deep into the summer delays a player’s introduction to pro ball.
“I wish the deadline were sooner,” Sabean said. “These kids are wasting a whole season. It wasn’t that long ago that guys didn’t go past the All-Star break (before signing). It’s ridiculous.”
It sounds as if Sabes is a little frustrated by the process.

Hurrah re: Gillaspie.

Maybe that’s what’s holding up the negotiations. An agreement on the sister clause has yet to be reached.

The sister clause
Always gotta look out for that one in any friend’s contract.
Thou shalt not __ my sister, while generally implicit, can really take the fun out of things.

You can pretty much have that be anything...
And it would be true.
My sister was once sunbathing in our back yard, and I had a friend over. Couldn’t get him away from the windows. Needless to say, the sister clause kicked in, and I was legally entitled to kick him in the nutz.

Is true. I have two brothers, ages 21 and 13, and the 21 year old still threatens “I’ll kick his ass” any time I mention a male admirer. I sort of want to date a girl now just to see what he does.
