McCovey Chronicles Prospect Night

AngelintheInfield had a great idea for a gathering of people from our fine blog. Next Saturday, August 16, the San Jose Giants host the Stockton Ports. Angel says he will be there (I assume you are a he, please correct me if wrong), as will I. Marcello also mentioned something about going.

It's a great chance to get together for a night of good Giants baseball, good food at Turkey Mike's BBQ, and good people. Tickets are cheap too, so bring the fam. Bring A's fans too as their Stockton club has some good prospects.

This post is where we organize the meetup. First pitch is at 6:05pm. Post with your intentions to attend, questions, carpooling/transit suggestions if needed, and anything else pertaining to the event.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

First!

I’m pretty sure me and the lady are in. We can conceivably carry two extra people (three if they’re really small!) in the Scion xB.

Will confirm both things by EOD.

How about Fresno North?

So as not to create any more confusion than is necessary, after the Giants/Ports game has passed we should start making plans for Labor Day weekend at the Rivercats [vs the Grizzlies]. Friday night is probably best for that too, since for most people it’s a 3 day weekend.

No San Jose Giants for me, we’re hosting a M&G for an IRC group that weekend.

I’m bummed that I can’t attend the Labor Day gathering. I fly out of SFO at 10am that Friday for my female BFF’s wedding.

I know right? From the wedding in Tampa I depart for Detroit to visit my father’s family for about a week. We’re going to a Tigers game (!) but they face the Angels only days I am there. Gross.

Is the ballpark Caltrain-accessible? We probably won’t be able to make it anyway – it’s a little late with a 2-year old – but if so we can at least consider it…

From the SJ Giants website:

Public Transportation:

From Santa Clara Light Rail Station:
Take the 73 Bus Southbound towards Branham/Snow.

From Tamien Light Rail Station:
25 Bus Eastbound towards Alum Rock Light Rail Station, Exit at Story/Senter Road, Stadium is three blocks South along Senter Road.

and according to Caltrain.com there’s a stop at Tamien.

So it looks like you’d have to transfer. ?

As far as I know, it’s not. I’d offer to give you guys a ride but I need to be there way early because I’m interviewing Darren Ford that day.

And the song without lyrics, YYZ

is the pinnacle of absolute rocktitude. Its amazing how little credit Rush gets for having some of the most talented musicians of their time. You could make a case that Geddy Lee (Bass) and Neil Pert (Drums) were in the top 10 for their respective instruments all time.

Fav Rush Songs
1. Tom Sawyer
2. YYZ
3. The Trees (jponry is the Oak to our Maples)
4. Working Man

I’m partial to Limelight myself. But those are very fine selections. One thing that drew me to Rush (aside from my mother playing their music constantly when I was wee) was the top quality of their musicianship. It’s all just very clean guitars and drums. I appreciate that in a rock band.

All great songs, but I tend to listen to their more recent stuff a lot more. “YYZ” is completely awesome, but check out “Malignant Narcissism” off their last album. (Neil uses a four-piece drum set on that, or something equally un-Neil-like. And yet he still sounds like ten guys. Oh, and the song lasts just over two minutes. Yes, Rush did a two-minute song.)

“The Trees” is a great fable, but “The Way The Wind Blows” completely blows it away, and for extra measure is followed by Lifeson’s most passionate and beautiful playing ever, on “Hope,” which is just him and an acoustic guitar. (Yes, Rush does acoustic songs now and again—but if you stopped listening after “Moving Pictures,” you wouldn’t know that.)

“Working Man” is still completely awesome, of course, and nothing tops “Tom Sawyer,” but if you wanna hear Rush do an old-fashioned proggy masterpiece in five minutes, listen to “Far Cry,” again from their latest album, “Snakes and Arrows.”

Aaaaaanyway….

Thanks, Walrus. Glad to hear someone else out there is digging it.

I probably came across as a dick in my posts the other day, and I didn’t mean to. Music is a very personal choice, and there’s ultimately no right or wrong. It’s fun to razz the other guy’s band, as long as you do it with tongue in cheek and don’t take it too seriously. Love is blind, as they say, and that applies to music as much as anything else.

You can’t hold people accountable for the stuff they did in the 70’s… it was a crazy time, requiring side burns, copious ankle room and plenty of synthetic fiber.
Reading Ayn Rand was actually a quasi-radical statement of intellectual rebellion at a time when youth culture demanded at least tacit acceptance of Marxist cant. I grew up with a guy whose rebellion against the new politically correct paradigm led him down a path where he now hosts a horrible late night (theoretically) humorous show on Fox news.

by Johnny Disaster on Aug 8, 2008 7:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

But people who do it now are just douchebags, right?

by groug on Aug 10, 2008 5:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

To clarify: Ayn Rand was a douchebag, as was Karl Marx.

by Johnny Disaster on Aug 15, 2008 9:11 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

um actually no

there was a period in time that neil was (and may still be) an ayn rand fan. but those were some of the earlier days. songs like anthem and 2112 (which is a 20 minute epic and should be turned into a broadway musical) were based around ayn rand. but as the 70s went on, they moved away from the longer songs and neils writing started to change as well. obviously the hits like tom sawyer and the spirit of radio, but listen to songs like heresy (off of roll the bones) which is about the fall of communism and nobody’s hero, which is a beautifully wrtten masterpiece about everyday people not getting their deserved credit. then there are songs like the pass and bravado.

neil writes a lot of stuff based on his emotions at the time. during the early 70s he was into ayn rand, but the album vapor trails is clearly based around the passing of his wife and daughter and the healing process and road he took.

i could go on for days about rush as i am as big a fan as anyone. also, i am a novice song writer myself and the complexities that they show in their song writing take a back seat to nobody. each one is an accomplished musician, and for the most part, they each play different parts and structures and make it all come together to fit. that is extremely hard to do. as opposed to a based rhythm section and a standard 4/4 beat.

rush is an aquired taste. 2112 is probably my favorite album, but they have underrated albums such as power windows, counterparts and fly by night. their first album i give them a pass on because neil wasn’t involved with the band until after that album was recorded. like i said, i could go on for days….

Ok though... I just rewrote Tom Sawyer

About Lincecum… you should like it now…

A modern-day warrior
who throws 95,
Today’s starting pitcher,
Mean mean pride.

Though he looks as if he nine,
He’ll get you swinging every time.
His windup, mechanics so fine,
Might as well just grab some pine.
Lin-ce-cum

You know this kids got the pedigree
Been working on his stuff since he was three.
Modern day legend, he’s no the myth
You just cant hit him, catch the drift?

His curve is, his curve is,
sharp and it buckles knees,
come on, have another try….

Todays Nolan Ryan,
He throws strikes on you,
And the zone he invades
He waves "bye bye" to you.

No, his arm is never spent
so Barbieri likes to vent,
To be the greatest, his one intent,
and he absolutely owns Jeff Kent,
Go Tim-my

Yea his ERA is under three
Best pitcher alive, we’d all agree.
Gets Martin, Pujols and Holiday,
Lookin’ like children, come and play.

The league is, the league is,
on its respective knees,
Go ahead, Connor Jackson, cry…

Exit the warrior,
better hire a lawyer
He throws strikes on you,
leaves with 13 K’s,
He gets right through, recievin’ Cy Young’s like bouquets.

Slow Day at work… and I’m pretty proud of that.
