Around SBN: Doug Flutie's Hail Mary, And Why College Sports Matter

minor lines, 8/6/08

AAA: Fresno lost to Nashville 8-3

Fresno: 1B Travis Ishikawa: 2 for 4, HR, 2B
Nashville: 1B Chris Woodward: 4 for 5, 2 2B

Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 6.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Fresno: RHP Roberto Novoa: 1.1 IP, 1 H
Fresno: RHP Victor Santos: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB

After two homerless games, Ishikawa went deep again.  His 6th HR in his last eight games was also his 22nd HR of the season. The Brewers' Woodward had his second four-hit game of the series.

Misch, who allowed just one run through five innings, threw 110 pitches (72 strikes) in one of his longest starts of the year.  Novoa, who had a 4.73 ERA in 35 relief appearances for the Nationals' triple-A affiliate this year, made his debut in the Giants' organization.  On two day's rest, the struggling Santos made his first relief appearance of the season after 23 starts.

AA: Connecticut lost to Trenton 3-1

Connecticut: LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1 for 3, BB, 2 SO
Connecticut: 2B David Maroul: 2 for 3, 2B, 2 E
Trenton: CF Austin Jackson: 2 for 4

Connecticut: LHP Ben Snyder: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K--2 PO
Connecticut: RHP Kevlim Pichardo: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2, R, 1 ER, 1 K--1 HB
Trenton: RHP George Kontos: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

EME and Maroul were the only two Defenders to reach base twice, improving their OBPs to .392 and .269.  Maroul and the Yankees' top prospect Jackson were the game's only two players with multiple hits.

Snyder's eighth start for the Defenders' was his best yet, but his ERA remains over 7.00 .  He faced just four batters over the minimum as he erased three baserunners (2 PO, 1 GiDP).  Pichardo allowed a couple 8th inning runs.  Kontos has made two very good starts since the Yankees nearly traded him to the Pirates.  Over his last two starts, he has 5 H, 3 BB, 0 ER and 18 K in 15.0 IP.

A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 4-2

San Jose: SS Matt Downs: 2 for 4, 2B, SB, E
San Jose: RF Mike McBryde: 2 for 4, HR, 3B

San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 WP
San Jose: LHP Joe Paterson: 1.2 IP, 2 K

McBryde homered for the second consecutive night to help improve his season line to .291/.370/.388 through 340 AB.  McBryde's XBH/H ratio remains just below 20%, though.  He and Downs, who played shortstop, were the two Giants with multiple-hit lines.

Tanner allowed less than 2 ER in a start for the first time in two months, improving his ERA to 4.20 and evening his W-L record at 7-7.  After 1.2 perfect IP last night, Paterson has peripheral stats of 22 H, 13 BB, 1 HR and 32 K in 28.2 IP since his promotion to the Cal League in May.

A: Augusta had a scheduled off-day
(Their only remaining scheduled off-day is August 26th.)
(They currently have a two-game lead, but only one game in the loss column, for the second half division title.)

ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Boise 16-6

Salem-Keizer: 1B Mike Loberg: 4 for 6, HR, SB
Salem-Keizer: 3B Michael Ambort: 3 for 4, HR, 2B, BB, SO
Boise: SS Ryan Flaherty: 2 for 5, HR, 2 E

Salem-Keizer: RHP Orlando Yntema: 5.0 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Salem-Keizer: RHP Brian Irving: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K--1 HB

Loberg and Ambort had big games, each reaching base four times, combining for nearly half of the Volcanoes' fifteen hits, and each going deep, for their 8th and 5th HRs, respectively.  Ambort, who has spent most of his pro career as a catcher, played third base defensively.  Flaherty, the Cubs' supplemental first round selection thsi year, had his fourth straight multi-hit game, raising his line to .316/.409/.544 through his first 114 pro AB.

Making his seventh start of the year, Yntema had perhaps his least effective start.  His ERA is 6.62 since his demotion to the NWL.  Irving, the Giants' 17th round selection, faced just two batters over the minimum in three scoreless innings of relief.

R: Giants defeated Rangers 10-2

Scottsdale: CF Wendell Fairley: 1 for 3, 2B, 3 BB, SO, SB
Scottsdale: 1B C.J. Ziegler: 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB, GiDP, E

Scottsdale: RHP Javier Hernandez: 5.0+ IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Scottsdale: RHP Steve Palazzolo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K
Scottsdale: LHP Ryan Verdugo: 1.0 IP, 1 H

With three walks each, Fairley and Ziegler each reached base four times, improving their respective OBPs to .364 and .394.

Hernandez has pitched better over his last four starts, during which he has allowed 8 ER, after he allowed 12 ER over his first four starts.  Palazzolo made his first rehab appearance, including stranding both of the runners he inherited from Hernandez.  Verdugo made his pro debut with a scoreless 8th inning.

DSL: Giants defeated Cubs #2 9-3

Dominican: 1B Victor Santana: 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SO
Dominican: RHP Miguel Ferrer: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K--1 WP, 1 PO

Santana (19.9 y.o.) reached base four times, improving his season line to .249/.357/.390 through 177 AB, which is similar to the .247/.373/.359 line had had a year ago in 223 AB.  Ferrer (18.0 y.o.) seems to be getting better and better.  Perhaps his best start yet came the day before his 18th birthday.  It was his fith straight start allowing exactly 1 ER, and it was his first of nine starts without issuing a walk.  On this downside, his strikeout rate remains on the low side, with a K/IP ratio below 0.67.

TI this year

Different approach at the plate from previous years or confidence overhaul? Maybe a bit of both?

Hard to say

BABIP is only .305, so he hasn’t been insanely lucky. He is just hitting everything, and hitting it hard.

His LD% isn’t even that ridiculous (20%). He’s just hitting the ball a lot. His balls in play are going for hits/outs about what you would expect, so it really just seems to be that he is just putting the ball in play more often. Also, his power is way up so that would suggest that when he is hitting it, he is hitting it well. (liners to the wall instead of liners through the infield)

More aggressive, perhaps?

Whatever works

He’s making good contact with the ball by the looks of it.

It’s hard not to pull for TI with all that he’s gone through so far. See you in a few weeks!

Ah HA! I found the answer

Ishi article from the Fresno Bee:

Ishikawa’s improved mental approach, he said, was born late in the 2006 season when he opened his life to religion.

“I no longer let the little things get to me, living and dying with at-bats,” he said. “I’d always been dedicated to baseball, but I started dedicating myself to God. Before, I had put it all on my shoulders.”

Yeah, but that’s not what he’s saying, at least in this quote. We all need something to help us take the long view, keep an even keel, etc etc. If Christianity is what does it for him, who can argue with that? (With the BvCE caveat below, however.)

I’m more interested in the stuff about his injuries. I don’t remember hearing about that. I’m not sure I buy that a wrist injury could bump up a player’s strikeout rate so much, but maybe a cascade of injuries could undermine his whole game.

by Evan on Aug 7, 2008 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well....

Keep in mind that the Yankees clubs from 1996-2001 (4 WS) had quite a few Christians on it. If I remember right from Buster Olney’s “Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty,” Paul O’Neil, Mo Rivera, Pettite, and a couple other players and staff were all involved in a Bible study.

Now, this doesn’t mean that there WS championships were divine intervention. It is also possible that the important link was Paul O’Neil since he was also on the 1990 Reds club that one the WS as well.

by Squire_Boone on Aug 7, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is probably also pertinent to mention

That a good majority of the teams that DIDN’T win the world series those years ALSO probably had many devout Christians on them.

I guess they just weren’t praying right, or something.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Aug 7, 2008 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, true...

I would have to agree. If I remember right, I think the Giants had quite a few at one point in the 70’s.

Either way, like I said, it could be that Paul O’Neil was the real key to those WS championships. AND, if this is true, then Sabean should sign him right now!

the early game is a makeup from one suspended by rain or tornado or something. Maybe Copeland’s name is on the lineup card from the earlier version? And now Mooney or somebody is impersonating him?
If Cope appears in a Fresno lineup later today, that will be a clue.

by aGIANTfan on Aug 7, 2008 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Happens all the time in the minors. It wasn’t a makeup game, it was the continuation of a postponement. Copeland actually did appear in the game and had two ABs before it was shut down and postponed. Yesterday they picked up the game where it was left off (they also apparently switched the home and away teams—i guess CT isn’t going to Portland again this year) so Copeland’s two ABs are officially a part of the game even though he’s no longer on the roster.

If you look carefully, you’ll notice that stats are all screwed up in the box scores of games like these as well. Pablo Sandoval is listed in the game box as having a .342 BA. He doesn’t it’s down in the .310s, but his 2 for 5 would have given him a .342 BA at the time of the original game date. Similarly, the other day Nick Noonan hit his 5th HR of the season in a game that ended up being post-poned to later in the season. The next day he hit his 5th HR of the season in a game that was officially completed. It will be interesting to see, when the delayed game is completed what they’ll call that HR, his 5th (post-dating the ones that came later)? Or his 7th?

I can’t put my finger on a specific example, but I’m pretty sure that it’s been known to happen that minor leagers who were traded mid-season have actually appeared for both teams in postponed games. That seems like it shouldn’t be legal, but I’m pretty sure it does happen.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
