Lincecum...

We all know he IS "The Franchise"....but it is almost ridiculous now. The Giants as a team have 48 wins.  12 of these now belong directly (not even mentioning the indirect no-decision wins) to noone else but Mister Timothy "Franchise" Lincecum.  I mean how much value can you put on AT LEAST 25% of the winning percentage of the whole team?  Sure Matty and Durty have pitched well at times and been "Cained", and Timmeh has gotten pretty good support the whole year, but how much more reason do you have to have to sign this kid long term THIS OFFSEASON!?!?  Talk about freakin no-brainers.  Ok, rant off, as you were.

I think I read that Timmy’s agent wants to take him through arbitration one year at a time. I’m sure the Giants have tried to sign him long-term (like Cain and Lowry) but he’s not interested. Financially, that’s probably a good idea for him because he’ll be on the free agent market earlier, but there’s always the injury risk.

I’d love them to sign him to a ridiculously long contract like Longoria, but right now, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.

I think we should all just get some real about Lincecum and admit that he might not be directly responsible for 100% of the Giants wins.

It is pretty insane

To think that, a pitcher, who comprises 20% of the teams starting rotation, has been the pitcher of record in 25% of the team’s wins.

FUCKING MIND BLOWING.

Matt Cain, 15%
Sanchez, 17%
Zito, 13%
Correia, 4%
Misch, hahahahha

Also, this is just another example of how Matt Cain is the 3rd best starter…. AT ABSOFUCKINGLOOTLY BEST!

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

You stop laughing at Pat Misch!

by xanthan on Aug 6, 2008 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Matt not that

Matt Cain has clearly been the Giants’ second-best, not third-best starter this season. His 1.26 ERA over the past 30 days is the best in the NL, and his ERA is only something like 3.13 since he had the worst start of his career on April 18th.

The last three and a half months might be the best stretch of that length in Matt’s major league career.

1973

The third year I followed the Giants was 1973. Ron “Bear” Bryant managed to pull an awesome year out of his ass and won 24 games, 27% of the Giants’ 88 win total.

Was he better than Linc? Should he have been signed long-term? Probably not, but he was all there was to be enthusiastic about that year.

Bryant’s actually one of those guys who was born at the wrong time. Had he been playing today, the bizarre injury he suffered in the winter of ‘74 (he flew off the slide in his back yard pool and landed ribs first into the side of the pool) probably wouldn’t have ended his career. The difference in sports medicine and understanding of rehab, etc. is as dramatic as the difference in any technological field over those 30 years. Don’t sell Bryant short, he could have been a very very good pitcher.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Evan on Aug 7, 2008 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions

There’s no guarantee Lincecum wants to sign an extended deal. Russell Martin is doing the same thing in LA, he won’t sign an extension, he’d rather take it year to year.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 6, 2008 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

Fun with VORP

Lincecum’s runs over replacement player. 42.2

The cumulative total of Giant’s hitters value over replacement hitter 37.7

To those not familiar with VORP, imagine two teams. The Timmy team is composed of Tim Lincecum, 13 Jose Castillos and 11 Pat Misch’s.

The Giants team is composed of 12 Pat Misch’s to pitch. Bengie, Bowker, Durham, Omar, Lewis, Winn, Durham, and the other hitters.

Over the course of a full season the Timmy team will win more games than the Giant’s team. Probably about six more games, in fact.

So considering that the payroll for the Giant’s hitters is about sixty million, then Tim Lincecum really shouldn’t settle for anything less than sixty-five million a year.

As a matter of fact there are currently 33 players in baseball worth more money than all of the Giant’s hitters put together. I don’t know why but I find this whole idea a little disturbing.

Probably not fair

You’re probably not being fair to Matt Cain and Brian Wilson with the Castillo/Misch remark.

by sharksrog on Aug 6, 2008 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Castillo / Misch

I was just using them as examples of familiar players that are basically replacement value. Matt Cain and Brian Wilson are both studs.

No Cy of Relief

The Giants’ relievers have blown six of Tim’s wins. They can’t be expected to hold onto every lead, but if they had protected three of those six, Tim would have 15 wins instead of 12. With the huge emphasis put on wins by the Cy Young Award voters, he would likely be the leading candidate (or at least the co-leader with Brandon Webb and Brandon’s 16 victories) instead of merely being in the top three.

But today may have been the most workmanlike performance of Tim’s career. Clearly he didn’t have his best stuff, yet he limited the opposition to only 11 bases on hits and walks in his season high-equaling eight innings. That he was able to strike out the side in the final inning was rather remarkable, too.

Anyone else love the pitches Tim threw to Brian McCann in Brian’s last at bat. Got ahead of him with the fastball, then mixed up five changes and curves. Each and every one of the six pitches was the one I would have called for Tim—including the one on which he shook off Bengie.

Tim had to know McCann might be the last batter he would face, regardless of the outcome. Yet he had the guts to throw the change up on 3-2, resulting in his eighth strikeout.

It’s kind of nice when the eighth inning is your best.

Y’know I too thought I would grow weary of the constant TIM IS SO GRATE stuff with Rog here but actually listening to him talk about the guy…it’s enlightening. Of course I’m one who loves to cram my brain full of baseball stuff anyway, so I’ll listen to anything as long as it has to do with the little white ball with 108 red stitches.

Are you saying this TIM IS GRATE stuff is greating on you? :)

by sharksrog on Aug 8, 2008 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's be fair now

Let’s be fair now. After Tim’s first start in June I sounded a slight alarm about him. It took a little while, but he did fade a bit for a month or so.

I also have criticized him for not throwing enough first-pitch strikes and for allowing the leadoff hitter in innings to get on base FAR too often.

Yes, I love Tim like I love my own son. But as with my own son (who got a promotion today, by the way. See that 8/8/08 thing IS lucky. :), I also know his flaws better than most.

It’s just that with Tim, despite his flaws, there is just SO MUCH to like!

by sharksrog on Aug 8, 2008 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely enjoyed it, but I can’t say the same for the Braves’ fan sitting next to me. I leaned over and whispered in his ear, “you’ll get used to it”. His expression was one of surrender.

by timmeh on Aug 9, 2008 3:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Can anyone confirm this?

This is from yesterday’s Yahoo! Giants team report:

“Another full inning most likely would have pushed [Lincecum] beyond 130, which is a little much for the guy who already leads the league in pitches.”

Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.
