Sergio Romo Designated for Assignment
According to Andrew Baggarly here, the Giants designated Sergio Romo for assignment by accident. Or something. I'm sure this will all get straightened out, but in the meantime it's perfectly acceptable to jump to conclusions and start freaking out.

I've said it before and I'll say it again
I really hate this team Sabean.
That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!
WTF. So he talked to his family when they were wearing Dodgers gear at Dodgers stadium last week – that’s no excuse to just cut the kid!
Wait… that’s not what it going on? * bangs head against table repeatedly *

I'm guessing this will work itself out to a reasonable conclusion
but if not… Jesus Christ what a ridiculous fuck up
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 6, 2008 11:03 AM PDT reply actions
Even if it works itself out, and I hope it does, this is inexcusable.
I’ve said this before, but what the FUCK does Sabean (or Bochy, for that matter) have to do to get fired, anyway!?
Hmm, thinking….Sabean has been GM since 1997. Bob Quinn, GM from 1993-1997, retired at the end of his run. Felipe Alou’s contract was allowed to expire – same with Dusty Baker. I think that was the case with Roger Craig, too.
Perhaps the Giants organization just doesn’t believe in firing managers or GMs. Accidentally DFAing good young relievers, yes. Firing inept morons, no.
they really should have fired Dusty Baker right after the World Series, simply not being able to agree to a new contract was such a pussy move!

I will laugh (read: sob) if the Giants lose Romo because they don’t understand how the rules work and because they wanted to call up 40-year-old Yabu.
n/m his career WHIP, K/9, etc.
Nothing to see here, move right along
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
Makes sense to me...
It was the same rationale for getting rid of that epic choker Joe Nathan
That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!
No
That actually had some basis in at least partially rational thought, and did not demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the rules.
Perhaps Sabean has mad cow disease, and his brain has turned to swiss cheese?
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
meanwhile....
Tyler Walker continues his quest to stop kill lincecums cy young chances.
Even better is they waited an extra day or two to bring Yabu back so they could figure out what to do.
As for Sadler…meh.
Last of the Ninth - Photography Site / jamesvenes.com - Blog
They sent down Matos too (and called up Sadler), so like… I don’t even know. There was absolutely ZERO reason to be sending Romo down. This is absolutely inexcusable, especially if we lose him.

update from baggarly:
I’m told that Romo was still on revocable trade waivers when the Giants optioned him, which is not allowed. Therefore, he was designated for assignment. I’m told that trade waivers supercede in this case…so it’s a bit tangled. Will the Giants lose Romo, an arm they value, for nothing? I’ll find out.

Adoptive father of howtheyscored. The beatings will begin momentarily.
whoa, he ok'ed it?
i’m kinda surprised.
Does this mean I’m famous??
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Just to make this entire topic relatively moot...
from Baggarly’s blog:
A little explanation on Romo: The Giants probably put him on revocable waivers because a potential trade partner was interested in him. Or they wanted t ogauge the general the level of interest. No matter the reason, you cannot option someone when they are on revocable waivers. (I’m up on most roster rules, but that’s a new one for me.)
Anyway, and this is the important part, the Giants insist the oversight will not result in losing Romo to another club. When you designate a player, you take them off your 40-man roster and have 10 days to waive, release or outright him. Before those 10 days are up, the Giants will revoke Romo off waivers be able to option him at that point. He’ll remain on the 40-man roster. Romo said he expects to join Fresno in Salt Lake on Friday.
Oh well
It was still a fun overreaction thread.

it doesnt matter that it can be fixed
it shows that the fo is totally incompetent and the “youth movement” is an absolute joke
this should not be excused
I don't follow you
If it turns out they knew what they were doing, it’s not a question of fixing a mistake but playing out a transition they engineered to simultaneously pursue trades and juggle the roster. And I don’t see how this is necessarily a repudiation of the youth movement. It may be they expect to give Romo and Matos more work in higher leverage situations at Fresno.

ya...it just coincidentally happened right after both had a bad outing
and part of a youth movement is allowing kids to have a bad outing or two…or three…im sick of the sabean apologists
the guy doesnt know what he is doing
from the Giants website
“The club couldn’t option Romo directly to Fresno because he’d been put on revocable trade waivers, but he’s expected to join the Grizzlies on Friday at Salt Lake. “
