AAA: Fresno lost Nashville 5-4 (10 inning)
(with the game tied 3-3 from the 3rd through the 9th inning)
Fresno: 1B Travis Ishikawa: 2 for 4, BB, SO, CS
Fresno: 3B Scott McClain: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO, E
Fresno: SS-LF Justin Leone: 2 for 5, 2 2B, 2 SO
Fresno: RF Ben Copeland: 0 for 5, 2 SO
Nashville: CF Tony Gwynn: 2 for 4, 3B, BB
Fresno: LHP Steve Hammond: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Fresno: RHP Dan Griffin: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
In the 10th inning, McClain connected for his 23rd HR. Ishikawa and Leone each had two hits, raising their respective AVGs to .300 and .240. Copeland had an oh-fer in his triple-A debut. The Brewers' Gwynn had a solid game, but is still have a disappointing season hitting just .278/.338/.321 in 277 AB in the PCL.
Hammond had a quality start against his former teammates. Threets allowed a couple baserunners but still faced just the minimum five batters in 1.2 IP (CS and GiDP to erase the two baserunners). He had a 4/0 GO/FO line. Griffin pitched a scoreless 9th inning in his upper minors debut but then failed to retire either batter he faced in the 10th inning, both of whom scored after he left the game.
AA: Connecticut defeated Trenton 6-2
Connecticut: C Pablo Sandoval: 2 for 3, BB, IBB
Connecticut: CF-LF Carlos Sosa: 2 for 3, BB, PO
Connecticut: RHP Dave McKae: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K--1 HB
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Sandoval and Sosa each reached base three times, improving their OBPs to .353 and .316.
McKae, who bounced between the rotation and bullpen in June and July with six starts among eleven appearances, had a very effective start, improving his ERA to 4.21. Hedrick struck out two of three batters he faced. He has 9 K in his last 4.1 IP.
A+: San Jose lost to Visalia 6-3
San Jose: RF Mike McBryde: 1 for 3, HR, BB
San Jose: LHP Jesse English: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K--2 HR--1 HB
McBryde, one of five Giants to reach base twice twice, led off the 6th inning with his 4th HR of the season.
English had a rough start, pounded for three runs in both the 1st and 3rd innings. His walk rate has increased. In his seven starts since the start of July, he has 19 BB in 35.2 IP, plus an ERA above 5.00 in that time. In his previous fifteen starts, he had 24 BB in 78.2 IP.
A-: Augusta lost to Savannah 4-0
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 0 for 4, 2 SO
Augusta: LHP Scott Barnes: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 WP
The GreenJackets' offense was limited to four singles and a walk, with no one reaching base twice. Villalona has had multiple strikeouts in three of his last five games, edging his SO/AB ratio up to just over 27%.
Barnes made his second start for Augusta, both of which have lasted four innings. At three different levels in his young pro career, he now has stats of 15 H, 7 BB and 31 K in 19.0 IP with a 2.84 ERA.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Eugene 14-10
Salem-Keizer: SS-2B Ryan Lormand: 4 for 5, SO
Salem-Keizer: 1B Mike Loberg: 2 for 5, HR
Salem-Keizer: CF-2B Caleb Curry: 5 for 5, 2 2B
Salem-Keizer: LHP Ari Ronick: 3.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.1 IP, 2 K
Curry and Lormand had nine of the Volcanes' twenty-one hits, improving their respective AVGs to .233 and .255. The hits were all singles, except for Curry's two doubles (which doubled his number of doubles to four) and Loberg's 7th HR of the season.
Ronick had allowed just 7 ER in his previous ten appearances as a pro, so this start came close to doubling his ERA, although it remains a very respectable to 3.13. The 8 H allowed doubled his previous career high. Quirarte retired all four batters he faced, stranding three inherited runners, to earn his 8th save. Over his last three appearances, he has 7 K in 4.1 IP, although his K/IP remains just below 1.00 for the season.
R: Giants had their regularly scheduled off-day (every fifth day)
DSL: Giants defeated Marlins 4-1
Dominican: 3B Cesar Osuna: 2 for 4, 2B, SB, E
Dominican: RHP Marcos Prada: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K--2 HB, 1 WP
Dominican: RHP Bertoni Garcia: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 5 K
Osunua (18.6 y.o.) had two hits, including the Gigantes' only XBH, raising his AVG to .236. He also committed his 9th error. Prada (17.11 y.o.) had an effective start, but his ERA remains above 5.00 after eleven starts. More impressive, at least statistically, was the dominant relief appearance by Garcia (17.1 y.o.), who has a stat line of 3 H, 0 BB, 0 R and 8 K in 9.0 IP over his last two appearances.

With Angel,
It’s hit or miss, really.
He has been getting much better lately, and the contact made yesterday was good. Very loud over the radio.
I expect him to continue to improve, and I’ll go to San Jose quite often to see him next year.

I'm thinking that McCoven
Should do “prospect nights”. They’d be less expensive than nights at the park, and we would actually know who the players are and give them some good encouragement. Twould be fun… and easy, I live in SJ.

I hope to go to the SJ Giants vs. Stockton Ports (A’s) game on Saturday, August 16th. Should be a great game to watch since both teams have some interesting prospects.

I went to one of the SJ games in Stockton and he crushed on that almost hit the scoreboard. According to one of the scouts that I was sitting next to if he could ever learn to hit an off-speed pitch he’s going to be a superstar. I guess the whole league is pretty high on him though considering he was one of the top prospects in the Quentin and Haren trades.

I really want to see Donaldson, Cardenas, and Sulentic too. Although, it looks like Sulentic is done for the year.

Freaking great idea. It’s sort of impromptu to suggest but I’ll be there Saturday night. Could we/should we get a gathering together for that?

Well it’s a good thing I double checked the schedule because the Giants are in Lake Elsinore this weekend. For some reason I could have sworn to you they were home. The good news is they’re home next Saturday against Stockton as marcello mentioned and that would be a prime game for our Prospect Night gathering.
Don’t mind me, sometimes I don’t brain so good.

I was going to say something, but I figured you had just meant the Stockton game. If people are interested in going to that game, I am in.

Unless we all really want to caravan to LE this weekend. :)
I’ll make a Fanpost about it but I swear to god if people don’t get organized about it I’ll get the rake and the hose and none of you will like me then.

They’re going to move him up a level after struggling?
by rotorueter on Aug 6, 2008 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Struggling?
I wouldn’t say he’s been struggling, necessarily. He’s shown steady improvement over the season after starting slow, and he leads Augusta in HR’s, and is only 6 out being in the top three in the league. His OBP has shown a steady rise, and he’s sluggin .409 for the season in a definite pitchers league. He’s not killing the ball like some others in the league, but he’s only 17 (almost 18).
So, he hasn’t done fantastically, but he hasn’t struggled. I’d think that they’d keep him with the others in his class, and Noonan and Bumgarner will most likely make the move to San Jose next year.

He hit .279 last month, and if he gets up to around .300 for this last month, then he should be moved up. He has also been showing more patience at the plate recently, which should make for lessened SO rate this coming month.

Just wanted to report that the kid who homered against us yesterday, Savannah’s Carlos Guzman, is a kid from Brooklyn who broke the heart of a girl that works with me. I give her daily reports on his progress, (she wants him to do badly) and how am I going to explain to her that one of our pitchers allowed him to go deep?? FU Paul Lussier, whoever you are!!

Steve Hammond seems like a good fit with the Giants org. He says he grew up a Giants fan (good man) and he’s really excited about pitching with Fresno this year. SF Dugout will run the full interview with him soon.

Hammond has walked into a perfect situation, because all the good starters the Giants’ have in the minors are probably at least two years away. If Lowry can’t come back and Correia continues to struggle, I can easily see him getting a shot. That being said, I don’t think he’s going to be very good.

kvetch kvetch
McKae and Hammond verging on starting pitching prospect status, that is news.
Meanwhile Conn defenders play 7 games in the next 5 days. With 12 active pitchers and 11 position players. Fans up there not real happy about it. Been at that level for a while.
They are also 6 games out of 2nd place, so probly no playoffs anyway, I am guessing it’s the first 2 teams in the division.

English
Jesse’s had two blow ups now in his last three starts. Seems like he may have hit a wall—and no wonder, he’s pitched about twice as many innings as he had in the previous two years combined, and is very near to having pitched as many innings this year as in his entire professional career prior to this. Seems like it would be a good idea to either shut him down, or at the very least let him skip a couple of starts and tune up for a playoff appearance as a reward for a job well done.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Also
I mentioned elsewhere that I suspect Daryl Maday could be hitting the same proverbial wall. I would think this is the time to give the swing guys their chances to start, and let some of the pitchers with 120+ innings back off a bit.
