TV Station: Gillaspie Signs
A television station out of Kansas is reporting that Conor Gillaspie signed with the Giants and is on his way to Arizona. Supposedly, he's going to get slot for the No. 37 pick, which is surprising to me 'cause I thought he'd get more.
Also, Andy Baggarly recently reported that the Giants are in the "finishing" stages of negotiations with the top four picks.
I suspect Gillaspie's deal will be a 2009 contract and that he won't play in games this year.

wow, great news!
that is interesting if he signed for slot, I read somewhere that some teams were saying his bonus demands were “delusional.”
Woot

Great news!
Not only is it great to have Conor in fold, if he truly signed for slot, it would appear that the change where teams get to retain their high draft pick the following season is giving them more equal leverage in negotiations.
It will be interesting to see if the Giants have Conor playing at least some second base. He is said to have the athleticism to switch there. And the Giants are saying that AnVil’s switch to first base may not be permanent.
Is it reasonable that Conor might develop quickly enough to be in SF sometime in 2010? Given that he outhit Buster Posey with the wood bat in the Cape Cod League and was in fact the league MVP, is it reasonable to think he might get to the majors as quickly or nearly as quickly as Buster?
Fuck reasonable. I want the Koolaid!!!

You know I might be totally off base on this
but the way I read that rule, I don’t think they would receive compensation for Gillaspie’s pick if they failed to sign him. It’s pretty specific about everything, and it pretty specifically does not mention compensation for the supplemental compensation rounds (though they are mentioned elsehwere, as for instance team’s failing to sign a 3rd round pick would get a compensation pick in a supplemental round between the 3rd and 4th rounds). I think that, being a compensatory pick already (for a lost free agent), there is no compensation gained if a team fails to sign the player (just as there would be no compensation if the team failed to sign next year’s compensatory pick for failing to sign this year’s draft pick).
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
Supplemental round is considered part of the first round
Hector Sanchez: really getting tired of playing baseball in foreign countries...
Officially?
MLB never ever lists supplemental 1st rounders in it’s list of 1st round picks, nor does it refer to them as first round picks. On the MLB website draft tracker the Supplemental Round is listed separately in the Round List (one of the search tools) between the first and second round and separate from each. I’m just saying, is all.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.
Not sure officially...
...but BA always calls it the supplemental first round when discussing:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/news/263869.html
So I always assumed it was part of the first round and subject to the same rules governing the first round.
Also, supplemental picks are usually referred to as first rounders (Joba Chamberlain & David Wright come to mind as examples).

The Giants have also signed 23rd round pick Jason Jarvis.
Jarvis has been playing in the indy leagues since his problems with ASU. The bonus was not disclosed. It is expected Jarvis will head to Salem-Keizer.

Come on, U.S. Agent & Beta Ray Bill flicks!!!!
If the next Fantastic Four movie REALLY wants to rule, the subtitle should just be “The Fall of Jessica Alba’s Panties”. That way no one cares about the plot, the special effects or the overacting. It’s about the one thing promised in the one sheets and ads. And if it doesn’t deliver, it’ll be murdered online for infinity billion years…kind of like Mike Myers’ career right now.

Sounds like a win/win
- SF gets the player at slot
- Dizzy gets a 2008 contract even though Sabean mentioned any player signing after ASG would be signed to 2009 contract

n Pittsburgh, Rob Biertempfel wrote the draft’s slot system, which “assigns a suggested” bonus amount for each pick, “like the draft itself, exists to save teams money.” It has “little to do with competitive balance,” and because the slot figure is “merely a suggestion, not a mandate, the system’s legality has never been challenged.”
MLB simply recommends a bonus for each selection
Hope this is true. Gillaspie needs to get on that fast track. I think he could be our Utley. Yes, yes he supposedly doesn’t project to have that much power, but neither did Utley. And Utley’s numbers are inflated in that bandbox anyway. Gillaspie has a great compact, quick swing with really quick wrists and hands. He’s going to be a .300 hitter. I can’t wait to see him in action.
Hopefull he and Posey start next year at SJ
Wow, next year we might see Villalona, Noonan, Posey, Bumgarner and Gillaspie all at SJ. I CANT WAIT!!!
I picked the right year to move to the South Bay!

IF Gillaspie goes to 2nd...
How do we feel about Nick Noonan? Granted, he’s a couple of years younger than Conor; I wonder if the brain trust would consider switching Nick back to SS, given the brilliance that is embodied in Charles Culberson?
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Its a good problem to have, depth that is. I think Gillaspie will stay at 3rd and possibly could get some action at 2nd in the upper minors, assuming that he moves faster than Noonan. Should be noted that Utley played some 3rd base in addition to 2nd in the minors. I think the two compare pretty well.
Couldn’t Noonan switch to 3rd or possibly the OF if Gillaspie is moved to 2nd? He is a highly athletic player and has a good bat, plenty of speed and a decent arm. I’d rather have this situation than what the Padres have with Khalil Greene, who pigeon-holed himself with good defense, is always a tease offensively and is now unmovable until he becomes a FA. The Padres don’t have a suitable replacement in sight and makes our SS quandary looks almost suitable.
it's always noonan somewhere
ehhh
Utley his 22 HR’s his junior year
Gillaspie hit 24 HR’s in his entire 3 years at Wichita State
However I really do like Gillaspie but i think he will be more of a .330/.400/.450 guy than Utley who was around .330/.400/.560 last year
waiting for 2011....
The Wichita report said Gillaspie flew to Arizona on Monday morning - presumably to the Giants’ Minor League complex - to sign his deal.“As you get into the last 10 days [before the deadline], little rumors like that creep up,” Evans said. “We’re working hard to sign everybody now, but nothing with Gillaspie is done.”
Per club protocol, Evans wouldn’t discuss the details surrounding negotiations with any of the top picks. The Giants won’t publicly discuss the signing process because “details about one situation could bother kids who are dealing with a different situation.”
Argh!
What’s all this 2nd base talk? Don’t we have a ton of 2Bs and a black hole at 3B since AV moved to 1B? I want Gillespie at 3B until he proves he can’t hang. I want my “Bill Mueller – 21st Century Edition” fantasy to play out.
