A Little Schierholtz Love?!

I mean, the guy went 3 for 4 with a grand slam (!) and a stolen base in their demolishment of Canada yesterday. Read all about it here. Oh, and Canada second baseman Stubby Clapp went 1 for 3 with a walk, which should just about get me to 75 words. Oh, I guess not. Well, good thing those darn Canadians have Emerson Frostad as well (he was 1 for 4, by the way, and plays 1b/c).

Stubby Clapp

I had the pleasure of watching him play for 2 seasons. He always gave his all. You may heap scorn on the phrase “gamer” all you want (and since I don’t hear any of the SF media blitz, I haven’t been inundated with the word), but Stubby Clapp was a gamer. And a classy player.

Gamers are only annoying when they don’t get on base and get overpaid. Clapp is a good gamer.

True Story

Stubby pinch-ran for Buck O’Neil in the top of the first inning during the 2006 Northern League All-Star Game in Kansas City after O’Neil led off the game with a walk. Buck was the leadoff hitter for both teams in the first inning as he became the oldest player to play in a professional game.

Clapp ended up going three-for-three with four RBI in the game and was named ASG MVP.

That event is one of my favorite all-time baseball experiences.

More

From the article:

After Brown’s single, the U.S. loaded the bases and, with a towering blast to right-center, Schierholtz cleared them. The grand slam was his second home run in as many nights for Team USA, and for the game, the right-fielder was 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.

This is awesome. I was really hoping he would put on a show, but so far, he’s outshining even LaPorta! w00t to the max!

I love that Nate and LaPorta are hitting together in the middle of the lineup. Every lineup I’ve seen so far has one hitting with the other either right before or right after. Great stuff.

Question

Could an oustanding tourament in international play stir interest in other team’s in a guy like Nate? In other words, will pro scounts put any stock in his performance?

Adoptive father of howtheyscored. The beatings will begin momentarily.

I’d lean towards no because the quality of some teams could be pretty bad.

That’s just my off-the-cuff reaction, I could be wrong. But I don’t see it increasing anyone’s stock that much other than a footnote “So and so did well for Team USA”

by xanthan on Aug 4, 2008 12:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m watching the Aug 3rd game now and this field they are playing on looks absolutely tiny.

I found the dimensions on Wikipedia.

Left Field - 305 ft (93 m)
Left Center Field - 371 ft (113 m)
Center Field - 400 ft (120 m)
Right Center Field - 373 ft (114 m)
Right Field - 327 ft (100 m)

That’s pretty small, I’ve yet to see Nates HR.

I’m always amazed to see old pics like that when the catchers didn’t wear shin guards. That took serious balls. Speaking of balls, did they at least wear a cup?

Catchers would receive the ball with both hands in those days. Keep the bare hand on the rim of the mitt, then trap the ball as it rebounded from the leather. One-handed receiving didn’t really come in until Johnny Bench.

Foul tips off the bare hand were one of the big reasons you don’t see a lot of great hitters among veteran catchers back in that era. It’s also a big reason why clubs used to carry 3 catchers.

Handwriting

Who thinks the handwriting on the wall is pointing to Randy Winn’s being traded, and who think it is indicating that Nate might go?

I’m beginning to think the Giants’ first draft pick next season could be an outfielder, depending on which players rise to the top of the draft. Outfielder, shortstop, first baseman or the old standby, pitcher.

Of course I’m still hoping they take the best prospect available. Unless he’s a designated hitter. :)

OK, so let Nate compete for the starting RF job next spring. If he wins and there still isn’t interest in Winn, Winn becomes the (expensive) 4th OF.

Since Winn can play all three OF positions, he’d get some starts and be a perfect PH/double-switch guy. He could also pinch-run as needed. I’m sure he wouldn’t be pleased with a reduced role in a contract year, but f**k ‘em.

I’ll celebrate it, for sure, but Begg looked terrible. I know it’s a pre-tournament game or whatever, but tossing 84mph fastballs repeatedly down the pipe never works (unless your Barry Zito lawlz). Everything he threw was low 80’s, down the middle, and with little-to-no movement. I’d never seen him pitch before.
