posey or weiters?
As you know in 2007 and 2008 both #5 picks in the amateur draft were catchers. I just wanted to know your guys' thoughts on what catcher you think will be a better major leaguer. Matt Wieters of the Orioles organization or Buster Posey who is currently in draft limbo. Hard to know
I think it is hard to know whether Buster Posey or Matt Weiters will turn out better, but the consensus seems to be Matt.

i hear weiters
will hit the crap out of the ball.. but posey seems to be the more developed catcher, defensively

Matt Wieters might be the best prospect in baseball at the moment (certainly the best or second best position player prospect.) Posey is certainly good but he can’t be put at anywhere near that level at this point.

Actually, given Posey’s all-around athleticism, I’ll bet he could.

Weiters has all of posey’s skills, but with more power and an even better arm.

I'm not sure Weiters has ALL of Posey's skills
I think most people see Posey as significantly better defensively (but other than that I agree).

I think people are just concerned about his size. BA says he’s got great footwork, good receiving and plus-plus arm strength. “The best defensive catcher he had seen since Charles Johnson”.
He hit 96 as a closer at G Tech so I think he may have been a better pitcher than posey too.
Matt Weiters is all sorts of good.

Wieters easily
He’s just fine defensively, and he can flat out mash at the plate.

Wieters by a long shot
And perhaps literally so. Now if we had chosen Justin Smoak, that might have been an interesting comparison….

Wieters easily. Total masher. The only question about his C ability is whether he’s too tall to stay there long term (similar to concerns re: Joe Mauer). But his bat would play anywhere.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Wieters is better, but there’s no shame in that given that he’s just about the best prospect in baseball and Posey hasn’t played a professional game yet.
by Dan from NM on Aug 4, 2008 8:14 AM PDT 0 recs
I’m going to say Posey, becausse the question was what CATCHER will be the better major leaguer. I just don’t see Matt being able to stay behind the plate with a full MLB season grind- too much wear and tear.
by ProspectHound of the Baskervilles on Aug 4, 2008 8:14 AM PDT 0 recs
Wieters is doing great in the pros, so I guess he’s a better prospect, but their college numbers are pretty damn close.
Wieters: .359/.484/.594, 35 hr, 152w/108k, 6 for 6 stealing bases
Posey: .398/.493/.626, 33 hr, 127w/101k, 18 for 25 stealing bases
Posey’s the better pitcher, for whatever that’s worth …
by Evan on Aug 4, 2008 9:18 AM PDT 0 recs
Yea, it’s not really a fair comparison with Buster yet to take a pro AB.
But I think Posey has to be considered the better prospect coming out of college. I mean, his senior season (in the same conference as Wieters) was just ridiculous (1.445 OPS). Plus he’s projected to stay at catcher and be good there.

(edit)
I meant junior season, where Posey put up this line .463/ .566/ .879. That’s crazy even with aluminum bats.

We all have a tendency when we see a line like that to think “fluke!”—especially in light of his first two college seasons, which weren’t especially impressive. But if you disregard the season-by-season ups and downs (which are quite possibly just random fluctuation) and consider a player’s entire college career to be one 850-plate-appearance sample, as above, then Posey looks as good as anyone.
So yeah, I’ve convinced myself that he’s a better prospect than Wieters was this time last year.

The only issue with lumping it all together is that we’re evaluating a period in which players are developing fairly rapidly, both physically and mentally. So his freshman season stats are not nearly as relevant as his junior season.
And with a stat line like that, there almost has to be some flukiness. But you could .200 points from his OPS and he’d still be coming out of his junior season more impressive than Wieters did.

because Weiters has torn up 2 different levels of professional baseball and has established himself as the consensus top hitting prospect in baseball, whereas Posey is yet to play a professional game. It would be kind of like saying “let’s compare Derrick Rose to Chris Paul,” it is just not a fair, or even worthwhile, comparison.

Rose vs. Paul
Well, I understand the analogy. Paul is entering his 4th year though. Plus, I’ve read comparisons between Rose and D. Wade and Jason Kidd. Although usually BS, sportswriters still take the time to make comparisons because fans can easily comprehend them. I think the comparison between Posey and Weiters is a bit more relevant because they were drafted in back-to-back years, play the same position, and were selected as the same overall picks.
Comparing their college statistics may help to project Posey’s future. Maybe not. I don’t think the comparison is useless though, mildly though-provoking I’d say.

Offensively Wieters, defensively Posey
It just needs to be measured how many runs each save with their defense vs their offense.
My guess is Wieters is better

not really, Wieters is better, and Pablo might not stick at catcher either, but his numbers are comparable this season, though slightly less impressive than Wieters and Sandoval is 3 months younger.

How about signing the guy first?
If Gerald requires a $12M+ bonus, then by the logic of pure sticker-shock, the guy better be the #1 prospect in all of baseball after three weeks of the Arizona Summer League. Of course, I’m pretty sure that if he requires that much, the Giants will have an extra first round selection next year…

Per Andrew Baggarly:
• The Giants’ top four draft picks remain unsigned 12 days before the Aug. 15 deadline, at which time the club would lose their rights. Scouting director John Barr described talks as in the “finishing” stages.

I heard the Giants were seriously considering switching Buster Posey to third base—until they read The McCovey Chronicles and learned that third base belongs to Nate Schierholtz.
