Why Not Bring Up Travis?

After watching John Bowker at the plate these last few months, I am getting the feeling that Bowker is just not ready for MLB pitching just yet and he could use some more seasoning at AAA, a level that he never experienced...Travis Ishikawa on the other hand seems to be ripping the cover off the ball and has had some Major League experience already. Travis is a superior fielder (some compare him to JT Snow...)  whereas Bowker'd defense at 1st leaves much to be desired ( No fault of Bowker considering its a new position for him)  So my question is  why not send Bowker down and bring Travis up to the big team? We should use the last 2 months to see who can fit into our plans and right now Bowker just doesnt seem ready...

Makes sense

But it would be hard to justify sending down your homerun leader.

I wouldn’t be against packaging one of the young lefty outfielders with one of the vets in a deal.
Bowker, Lewis, and Nate can’t all get at bats, and none of them are really distinguishable from each other.

If Bowker can move back to the OF, in September Ishikawa can split time at first with Pablo (I doubt Bochy would bench Bengie).

by DesertFox on Aug 3, 2008 5:09 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why have Pablo split time with Ishi? While it’s true that Pablo hits LHP much much better than Travis, it’s equally true that Pablo is a vastly superior hitter from the left-hand side (.420 OBP, .667 SLG left handed vs. .315/.388 right handed this year).

Just taking the AA numbers into account this year, Travis hit .291/.382/.462 overall and .330/.406/.545 against RHP while Pablo’s has hit .319/.345/.536 overall and .333/.365/.611 vs. RHP in about 95 fewer ABs. Ishikawa’s has the advantage in OBP and Pablo the advantage in power (and given their relative ages and Sandoval’s power development the last two years, this seems like a believable long-term trend to me).

Taking these numbers together with their numbers vs. LHP I don’t see this as a very natural platoon. You’re getting the worst out of Sandoval by by only playing him vs. LHP and arguably the worst of the two hitters vs. RHP.

I agree

I’d rather see Pablo get some starts behind the plate if the Giants decide to call him up, but I am not sure if I think they should call him up this year.

I agree

I’d like to see him get a complete, successful year in AA under his belt. A cup of coffee to enjoy the big leagues in September, and a return to Fresno to start ‘09 seems right to me.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

I didn’t mean for them to platoon, since I don’t think developing players should be platooned.
I just thought it would be a good way for both of them to get at-bats.
Pablo and Travis splitting time at first, with Pablo spelling Bengie on the side.
(Didn’t know about their splits though, pretty interesting)

I think Nate is the most expendable of our left-handed outfielders. I have never been a big fan of his swing; it just does not look like a good power stroke to me. Plus, his inability to take a walk bothers me. Then again, Bowker hasn’t been known to take a whole lot of walks either.

Given that the guy is 24, there is room for any “improvement” he might need. He puts up power numbers in AAA, so I’m sure he’ll turn out fine. And the fact that Lewis is proven, he is most likely more valuable.

by giants9107 on Aug 4, 2008 4:54 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sounds good

SF definitely could add some power/run producing to its line-up and possibly Travis Ishikawa could provide that to this team. The more ABs he could get at the ML level could give the organization a better read on his long term chances. Rather than sending down John Bowker would prefer the Giants return him to the OF and send down Eugenio Velez.

by wilriv21 on Aug 3, 2008 5:25 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Hello Ish, Bye Velez

totally the better move. There is no doubt in my mind that Velez is no more than a lifetime AAAA player that has been lucky enough, due to Frandsen’s injury, to get the call up. move Velez down, call up Ishikawa. Let Burriss and Ochoa handle the middle of the field, with Aurilia and Vizquel being the back up duo.

Bowker’s doing fine. He’s just getting unlucky with his line drives because he keeps hitting them at people. That’ll stop eventually, and his numbers will be a lot better than they look right now.

by groug on Aug 3, 2008 5:28 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It’s pretty incredible that he’s still hitting a line drive 25% of the time. His current BABIP is about 67 points under where it should be.

by xanthan on Aug 3, 2008 5:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nice

It’s really nice to hear from Mordy, and Travis Ishikawa’s two homers today - giving him 13 in something just over 140 at bats with Fresno - peaked my interest a little bit, too.

But Groug and Xanthan are right about John Bowker’s very high line drive, which must be one of the best in the game. Although John strikes out too much (and as someone else mentioned, doesn’t walk enough), it is hard to argue that he is being overmatched given that when he hits it, he is hitting the ball, well, hard.

It is my opinion that Freddie Lewis has stolen Bowker’s karma, as Freddie’s balls keep getting through the infield or falling in the outfield, while John’s line drives keep hanging up and getting caught.

Meanwhile, Travis Ishikawa IS a very fine fielder, as Mordy mentioned. He just LOOKS like a ballplayer, and can even run a little. I would like to see him called up in September, used for defense and get a few starts to see what he can do. But keep in mind this is a guy who played briefly for the Giants two years ago, then was demoted all the way back to San Jose last summer (in part due to injury).

In the short term, the Giants appear to be overloaded with lefty bats at the initial hassock. Bowker and Ishikawa both bat from the left side, and as someone else mentioned, the switch-hitting Sandoval also hits better from the left side. The long-term answer at the position may be Angel Villalona, a right-handed hitter, but for now it appears the position leans a little too much to the left.

by sharksrog on Aug 3, 2008 11:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But how likely is it that that is a fluke? Does LD% regress particularly quickly? What kind of sample size does one need with such things?

Much as I like Bowker, 15 walks vs. 66 strikeouts says “He ain’t ready.”

by Evan on Aug 4, 2008 9:59 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Same with his pathetic July numbers. They say he isn’t as good as his LD% may suggest. Nobody is that unlucky.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 4, 2008 10:37 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, people are that unlucky all the time. There are plenty of players with line drive rates as good as Bowker’s or better who have a lower BABIP for the season. It absolutely could be an unlucky fluke.

I’m just wondering whether the high line drive rate is itself a fluke.

It's possible

That is certainly a possibility. Just like it is a possibility that Brian Wilson’s BAA verses right handed hitters could be a fluke.

In cases like these, the best tool we have to work with is our eyes. And even during his horrible July, what I saw from Bowker was a good hitter. My eyes could certainly be wrong. I certainly don’t see a perfect hitter. He could have a better approach at the plate, for instance. But overall, I see a good hitter.

Both good points, Evan

Both your points here were good ones, Evan.

For about a month now - ever since I learned how high his line drive rate actually WAS - I have been expecting Nate’s line drive rate to regress. But Nate’s line drive percentage has stayed remarkably consistent the past two months or more.

The 66/15 K/BB ratio is certainly a concern, but John has always been a low-walk, high-strikeout hitter. And the past two months or more his walk and strikeout rates have been rather consistent, as well.

I’m not all that sold on John (especially against left-handers), but I have been surprised at how well he has kept his performance up after initially falling back after an amazingly hot start.

by sharksrog on Aug 4, 2008 4:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

doing fine

I concur. While prodcuction isn’t completely irrelevant, the real goal here is to get him time in thge field and at the plate at this level. As long as he’s learning, he’s doing well. As for Travis, I’d rather let him have the extra 100 ABs down in Fresno and see him come up after rosters expand- Im mean Morty, did you at least check his BA before you said that Travis was ripping the cover off the ball? Ishikawa has always shown good power, but anyone hitting .281 in the PCL can stay in the over a little longer

by ProspectHound of the Baskervilles on Aug 3, 2008 5:45 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

When I stated he was ripping the cover off of the ball I was referring to his hitting 5 hr’s over his last 7 games or so…Listen I happen to like Bowker (he is even on my fantsay team!!!) but i am witnessing too many swing throughs on balls that should be put in play and outside of his hot start he is really faltering at the plate.I do notice that he has hit into some bad luck when his line drives seem to find the opposition’s glove, but overall, I just don’t see him as an option right now. Also, lets not forget that Travis has been in the system a bit longer than Bowker and he will be running out of options pretty soon. Might as well see what Travis can do with the big club now in a pressure free environment. Who knows, Travis can be the solution we have been looking for and he is in our system!!

If you don’t like swing throughs, I’m not sure how much you’re going to enjoy Ishi. He’s done a more than admirable job at cutting down the Ks this year, but I think judging from his record we could expect an everyday Ishi in the majors to be putting up 160+ K numbers.

by wilriv21 on Aug 3, 2008 6:14 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on Aug 3, 2008 6:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am not sure if I entirely agree with that, but predicting Ishikawa’s production at the ML-level is kind of a crap shoot.

I would think that 15 HR power is a given, but I think he could (potentially) have 25-28 HR power (think J.T. Snow 1997 & 1999). I don’t think he will ever hit for a high average (.270 seems right), but I think he could be a guy who could hit some HR’s, take a walk, and strike out while providing solid defense.

But, I agree with others that he needs more time in Fresno. I would like to see TI get a good look in September.

by Squire_Boone on Aug 3, 2008 6:50 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You could certainly be right. I remember I used to watch his BP when he was at Hagerstown and they were a sight to see - even at 19 or whatever he was then the ball really jumped off his bat. The problem always seemed to be that in games he was way too passive about attacking hitters pitches - couldn’t pull the trigger decisely enough. More than anything that was what led to his huge K totals.

It’s hard to believe that’s a problem that could have a light bulb cure years later, but if it is, maybe that “special bat” that they paid 1 million bucks for is still in there. If that were true it would really be pennies from heaven for them at this point.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

counter point.

I could see a hitter have a light bulb solution for that a lot more likely then suddenly figuring out strike zone discipline.

I am not yet claiming such has happen Travis Ish. Just noting it seems better odds then the traditional Giants farm hand problem. ( See slop. Flail recklessly at slop.)

.281

He’s hitting line drives 21% of the time, and his BABIP is only .287, so you could add about 40 points of BA to his line to get closer to his true BA.

Ishi

I don’t know that now is the right time to call up Ishi. He could still be an everyday solution at first if he can hang against left-handed pitching a little mo better. He seems to be finding himself in this regard at Fresno. Messing with that by rushing him would be counter productive at this point. I’m still high on Ishi though. Outside of Villalona, I think he is the best first baseman in the Giants system.

The line drive discussion is interesting. you folks are making a firm prediction that Bowker’s BA will increase. Other folks say he swings out of the strike zone too much, and so his BA will decrease.
But all that aside, because of options and all, Ishi may be our 1B for 09. So Mr Bowker gets to explore friendly Fresno. Good thing about that is, Bowker hopefully will learn to play defense at 1B which DrB says is real bad.

by foothillsfan on Aug 4, 2008 11:00 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Once you are placed on the 40 man and brought up the first time, your option clock begins. From that point on, even if you never are again on the active in-season roster, you automatically use up an option when you are “optioned out” at the end of ST. This is why they frequently refer to players who are out of options as being victim of the numbers game. Nate Schierholtz was optioned out at the end of this ST and that used up an option for him for ‘08—had he been brought up and sent down 10 times during the course of the season he still would only have used up that same one option. It doesn’t matter. So Travis has used up options in ‘08 and ‘07despite never being “brought up” to the majors during that time.

I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..

Leave Bowker alone

I like the bringing up of TI, but not at the expense of John Bowker. Bowker has been better than anyone has a right to expect coming out of basically just AA ball, and there’s absolutely no indication that TI will do better. If Mordy’s idea was to bring up TI, move Bowker to right and sit Winn’s ass on the bench until Nate brings home the gold, I would really like the idea, but I don’t think Bowker should be sent out. I actually prefer that they bring up Pablito, and my plan is to give him all the starts at first at lefties, two starts a week for Bengie, and two times a week where he starts at first while Bowker plays rightfield. That should have him in the lineup almost everyday.

I don’t think there’s a lot of reason to let Ishikawa stay in Fresno. He’s not young for AAA, and he hit well enough in connecticut to suggest that this is not just PCL inflated hitting.

But I agree that Bowker needs more major league at bats for evaluation. Sitting Winn for most of the rest of the season, and sending Bowker to the outfield would give the Giants organization valuable information about these players, even if that information says that neither helps the team more than Winn.

Why not?

Sit everbody and trot out this lineup for the rest of the year.
C- Sandoval
1b- Ishi
2b- Burriss
3b- Castillo
SS- Ochoa
LF- Lewis
CF- Rowand
RF- Bowker

I would pay more money to see that lineup fail than to see the varsity team win.

i'd hit it

i’d be concerned about Pablito being promoted too quickly and scuffling at the big-league level, but barring that, I have zero problems with that lineup.

Pretty nice lineup, but...

...it has a little too much Castillo for my tastes.

Guys, what’s getting lost in this entire conversation is that it’s August 4th. There’s less than 4 weeks left to the AAA season, and then we’ll see guys like Travis up here anyway. Travis is having the best week of his pro career- leave him alone to have it. Respect the streak.
And all this play the hot hand garbage is great in May or on X-Box, but nobody gets sent down to Fresno to work on something/get a cup of coffee promotion in August unless they get caught in a DL related roster crunch/opportunity.
Finally, I am highly amused to see that Travis has a bandwaggon. Not even I had Travis on my top 30 list (though he was an honerable mention and on my potential comeback list) and when I suggested in early may that park related home numbers in AA were masking a break out in the making for Travis, the most polite response was that I was in the running for the lead in ‘Annie’ . Guys, they are rookies and farm hands. They are young and inexperienced. Significantly more patience is needed when they hit slump/.make mistakes, and the same applies when they hit a hot streak. Bowker could go 0 fer 20 next week and sending him down would still be a huge mistake. Teams develop rookies by sending them out there to learn and adjust.
