minor lines, 8/2/08
AAA: Fresno defeated Memphis 10-9
Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 3 for 5, 2 SB
Fresno: 1B Travis Ishikawa: 2 for 5, HR
Fresno: 2B-LF Justin Leone: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO
Fresno: C Guillermo Rodriguez: 3 for 3, 2B, BB, PB, E
Memphis: PH Brian Barton: 1 for 1, HR
Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 3.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Fresno: RHP Vinnie Chulk: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K--1 HR
Frenso: RHP Billy Sadler: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Ishikawa's HR washis 5th HR in his last seven games, his 11th PCL HR and 19th HR this season. Leone had his 15th HR this year. Timpner and G-Rod each had three hits, raising their respective AVGs to .243 and .286. The Cardinals' Barton had just one plate appearance but still managed to homer for the third consecutive game.
Palmer had three scoreless innings to begin the game but then allowed 6 ER in the 4th inning, raising his ERA to 4.26. He threw 90 pitches (51 strikes) in less than four innings. Chulk has allowed an earned run in three of his last four appearances. Sadler earned his first save of the year with a perfect 9th inning.
AA: Connecticut lost to New Hampshire 2-1
Connecticut: DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1 for 3, BB, SO
Connecticut: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 1 for 3, HR, GiDP
Connecticut: RHP Joe Martinez: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K--1 HR, 1 WP
Rohlinger connected for his 5th HR since his promotion. Despite the league reputations, he has shown more power in the Eastern League than in the Cal League, with a .484 SLG in 126 AB for Connecticut after just a .419 SLG in 277 AB for San Jose. EME was the only Defender to reach base twice.
Martinez, who had his worst month of the season in July, has not put together two strong starts in a row.
A+: San Jose defeated Modesto 9-3
San Jose: 1B Brett Pill: 4 for 4, SB
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 1 for 4, HR, 2 SO
San Jose: RHP Nick Pereira: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 WP, 1 E
San Jose: RHP Taylor Wilding: 1.2 IP, 1 K
San Jose: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 1.0 IP, 2 K
With four singles, Pill had a third of the Giants' dozen hits and raised his AVG above .250. D'Alessio had his streak of multi-hit games snapped, but he did connect for his 2nd HR since the Cal League all-star break in mid-June.
Pereira, who went on the minor league DL after nineteen starts with Fresno, made a second rehab start with San Jose. Wilding and Edlefsen combined for 2.2 perfect IP in relief.
A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 8-6
Augusta: CF Shane Jordan: 3 for 4, HBP, 3 SB
Augusta: RF James Simmons: 2 for 3, HR, BB, SB
Augusta: RHP Oliver Ordle: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Augusta: LHP Ryan Paul: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K
Jordan had three singles, raising his AVG to .260, and had three steals, raising his team-leading total to 31 SB. Simmons connected for his 3rd HR.
Odle, who allowed just 8 ER in five July starts, had his least effective start with 5 ER allowed since the end of June. Paul struck out five of the ten batters he faced. The nearly 24-year-old reliever now has 41 K in 31.2 IP since his demotion, but his BB/IP ratio remains above 0.50.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Vancouver 3-1 (7 innings) in game 1
Salem-Keizer: 3B Skyler Stromsmoe: 3 for 3, BB, SB
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K--1 WP
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 K
Stromsmoe, an undrafted free agent signed a year ago, reached base in all four trips to the plate, with the three singles raising his AVG to .250.
Loree had another effective start, bringing his ERA back below 2.00. He matched his career high with 7 K, a mark he set and matched in each of his three incredible starts in which he allowed just one baserunner combined. Quirarte earned his 7th save, stranding two inherited runners in the 6th inning and then working a scoreless 7th inning.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Vancouver 6-5 (7 innings) in game 2
Salem-Keizer: RF Francisco Peguero: 2 for 4, CS
Salem-Keizer: DH Michael Ambort: 1 for 2, 2B, BB
Salem-Keizer: LHP Eric Surkamp: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Peguero, the only Volcano with multiple hits, raised his AVG back to .333. Ambort, the Giants' sixth round pick a year ago, had the Volcanoes' only XBH, raising his XBH/H ratio above 50% and raising his SLG to .543 in 70 AB.
Surkamp has strugged a bit in his young pro career as a starter, with 8 ER in three short starts; but he has allowed just 1 ER in three relief appearances.
R: Giants lost to Rangers 8-7
Scottsdale: CF Wendell Fairley: 1 for 2, HR, HBP, SO
Scottsdale: LHP Aaron King: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Fairley led off the game with his 2nd pro HR.
King, who got his second start among seven pro appearances, saw his ERA nearly double to 3.63. But he did set a new career high with 7 K. Unfortunately, the 5 H and 4 ER were also career highs.
DSL: Giants defeated Blue Jays #1 7-2
Dominican: CF Carlos Willoughby: 3 for 4, 2B, 3 SB, CS
Dominican: RHP Armando Paniagua: 4.0 IP, 3 BB, 1 K
Willoughby (19.9 y.o.), who hit .291 in 86 AB with a 12/3 SB/CS line last year, now has a .305 AVG in 154 AB this year with a 27/3 SB/CS line. Paniagua (18.7 y.o.) pitched four shutout innings to pick up a save in his second pro appearance.

- Should Travis Ishikawa make reservations for SF? Since he is already on the 40-man roster the decision should not be too difficult.
- Will EME play for Fresno this season?
- Is Rohlinger in the mix for 3b in 2009?
- Does Pablito end the season at Fresno or SF?
considering Rohlinger as a 3B possibility for 2009 would be overly optimistic. He started this year in San Jose and only has 126 ABs in AA. So far moving him fast hasn’t seemed to hurt him, but with only 126 ABs in the upper minors he is probably better off playing in Fresno next year and hopefully figuring into the 3B mix in 2010.

I'm kinda late on this but...
What happens/ is happening to Rafael Rodriguez? Does he just start Rookie ball next year? Is he playing right now anywhere in the Dominican?
Good to see Fairley hit one out… I would like to see him try and steal more bases (looks like is 0-1 on that on the year) with that speed he has but I’m sure that will come along.
He isnt playing anywhere yet, but they are getting his H2B Visa ironed out and he will be reporting to the Arizona complex hopefully before the end of the month but certainly before instructionals.

Joe Martinez
Steve,
Do you mean “not” or “now” when talking about putting together two good starts in a row. I don’t remember the score but I think he won last time out in Binghamtom.
MadBum...
pitched another 7 scoreless innings for Augusta today striking out 9 and walking nobody…How much longer will he pitching in Augusta? He should at least join the other phenom from last years draft in San Jose…..Man, the future sure looks bright

and Angel Villalona hit his 13th HR this season. An interesting tidbit is that Villalona has more errors (14) than he has HRs this season.
more importantly
it was the second straight game that Villalona took a walk!
looks
better than it is
the one one the first was IBB, and today the pitcher was wild. Still, he has shown a good bit more discipline, and his SO rate has dropped and his average has jumped—which is very encouraging.
Alderson is also dominating yet again
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 3, 2008 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions
finished with 6 IP, 2 hits, 4K - No ER or BB
his ERA is now 2.82
Dominating a hitters league!
and the best part is, that doesn’t even really qualify as a great start for him

Alderson got Lincecumed
Left the game leading 3-0, the bullpen squandered his 12th win of the season.
SJG win it in the 13th
we left after 10. Alderson was SICK, i tell you. Sick

Pablo Sandoval has 12 doubles on the season in 138 AB. The leaders in doubles ahead of him have at least 245 AB. Sandoval is tied with EME in doubles and EME has 318 AB.
I’m in Fresno tonight observing the Grizzlies. It’s 100 degrees here! TI is starting at first. More details as they unfold.

I’ll see if I can coerce both into the car. We do have some very tasty chocolate mousse in the press dining room I could use to lure them.

Recently Andrew Baggarly blogged about the possible Velez demotion/Sandoval promotion. Is this a tell tale sign that negotiations with #1 pick Posey are not progressing as expected?

In case anyone cares about Erick Threets, his velocity was around 92, topping out at 94. His change was around 87. He allowed a grand slam a little while ago.

McClain can pick it at third. It is his natural position and all. But he moves well around the bag and can get to balls quickly. The error he had tonight was on a wide throw. The play he made to get the ball was great.

LIVE MINOR LINES
so tomorrow can be the wrap. Baroness rules. And food details, yum
adopter/sponsor of "Go, Antoan" Richardson
yeah well
I was at the SJ Giants game and Tim Alderson dominated, but the bullpen coughed it up, only to have SJG win it in the 13th!!!
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Cool. How did he look? On a scale of 20-80, how would you grade his curveball? Fastball velocity? Is he really 6’7” or just 6’6”? Also, I hope you took video to show us.
No video, sorry.
Here are my thoughts.
His motion is really crazy looking. Kinda like K-Rod but from the stretch. All arms and elbows.
If the gun at Muni is accurate, his fastball never broke 89. It went 86 to 89, and his curve was low to mid 70s. Obviously Tim A’s control is his main weapon. The guy is simply a dart-thrower. He made the Nuts hitters look ridiculous for 6 innings. He wasn’t blowing guys away, just keeping them off balance.
It wasn’t until Trinidad came in in the 7th that I even realized how well Alderson was throwing. Trinidad came in and gave up two LOUD base hits - a double and a single - and then I went “Ahhhhh! It wasn’t that the Nuts hitters were that bad; it was that Alderson was that good!”
Re. his height, I couldn’t really say. 6’ 7” seems like a bit of a stretch, tho. His curveball isn’t a big sweeper, and he wasn’t even throwing it that often by my recollection, but he throws it consistently for strikes. This makes it hard for me to even grade his pitches, because neither the fastball nor the curve is a plus pitch—it’s his pinpoint control that makes him so effective. (If anyone’s wondering, the strike zone was pretty good. Ump was giving some stuff off the edge, but it wasn’t ridiculous.) I’ll let folks with more knowledge and experience weigh in on Timmy 2’s curve.
Of course, in true Giants fashion, the bullpen threw away his great performance. In non-Alderson news, Waldis Joaquin was blowing guys away w/ 94-MPH heat, although he shows a LOT of ball in his delivery.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
one other thing i meant to include
Was that I worry about how this will translate to the upper minors and the majors. Even with great control, is an 89 mph fastball good enough to get out big-league hitters consistently? (Greg Maddux says yes, of course, but I have my concerns about how Tim A’s stuff will fare against better hitters.)
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
I share that concern as well.
What kind of movement, if any, are you picking up on the fastball (that was, after all, one of the keys with Maddux—though I’m certainly not comparing the two!)?
Tim A was throwing his fastball in the low 90’s a couple months ago. It may be a tired arm or the speed gun. I wouldn’t worry. He is only 19 and may add a few MPH.
It is good to see TI pick it back up a notch after a cooling off period. I say bring him up and see what he can do.
Move EME to Fresno.
Move Pablito to SF.
