Vizquel wants to wear a Giants jersey next year
From Schulman's Giants Notes column:
Omar Vizquel would like to wear a Giants uniform next year, be it in San Francisco or in Tokyo. The 41-year-old shortstop wants to play in 2009, and if he cannot find a job in the majors, he might look to the Far East.
"If I cannot find something satisfying here, there is a possibility I might end up in Japan playing ball," Vizquel said Friday.
Anyone want to chip in for a plane ticket to Japan for M. Vizquel?

Where else would he play?
Is there a major league team with a worse SS situation than the Giants?

Sure, he can wear a Giants jersey
As long as it’s as a coach.

What makes you think he wants to coach?
The evidence seems to say otherwise. He’s extremely reluctant to let go of playing, and his legion of outside interests are well cataloged.

He has been emphatic in expressing his desire to manage, but I seem to remember that he’s not particularly interested in coaching.

well that's okay
we are looking for a new manager, aren’t we?
(we may or may not include the giants’ front office)

The last thing I want is Vizquel managing

I never said he would want to be a coach. I said I’d prefer to see him as a coach as it’s clear that his playing days look pretty much over.

Sounds great to me. They’d love him over there, and he probably has 10-15 home run power in that league.

Giants Jersey, YES! Player Contract, NO!

Don't Giants employees get a discount at the Giants Dugout Store?
Omar should take advantage before his contract is up.

I would totally get a Yomiuri Giants Vizquel uni
Barry Zito - Mildly half-OK! Sometimes.

Why don't Japanese pro players have their names in Japanese on their unis?
OK, romanji is a valid way of writing Japanese, but the least Japanese of all the ways you could do it.

Possibly to avoid confusion about how a name is read? For example, the surname 打田 can be read as Uchida, Uchita, Utsuda or Daida.
Still in despair.

Maybe, but the same thing tends to happen with new players in MLB, too. And that resolves itself after the guy gets on TV a few times, Tim Lincecum being a recent example.

Primarily...
…so they can get names on the jerseys in a reasonable amount of time.
Only 26 letters in the alphabet, so you can sew a new name on fairly quickly, but thousands of potential characters in surnames so you’d have to special-order them all.
I have set Dave Roberts free; if he comes back, it was meant to be.
