minor lines, 8/26/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 2-1
Fresno: 2B Travis Denker: 2 for 4, 2B, E
Fresno: SS Justin Leone: 0 for 4, 3 SO
Las Vegas: RF Delwyn Young: 2 for 4, 2B
Las Vegas: 3B Angel Chavez: 1 for 2, BB
Las Vegas: 1B Andruw Jones: 0 for 2, SF, SO
Fresno: RHP Brad Hennessey: 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K--1 HR
Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 1.0 IP, 1 H
Las Vegas: RHP Scott Proctor: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
With two of the Grizzlies' five hits, Denker was the only Grizzly to reach base twice. In 56 PCL games, he has 18 doubles but 7 errors. Leone suffered the oh-fer with the hat trick, raising his SO/AB ratio above 26.5%. Has the Dodgers' Jones had a position change? Young, who has spent nearly the entire season in the majors, was the lone 51 with two hits. Along with Denker and Young, the ex-Giant Chavez was the only other player in teh game to reach base twice.
Hennessey lowered his ERA to 4.83 in 21 PCL starts. Misch faced the minimum three batters in the 8th inning. Proctor made his second rehab appearance, about two weeks after his first rehab appearance.
AA: Connecticut lost to Reading 5-3
Connecticut: CF Antoan Richardson: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO, SB
Connecticut: 2B Olmo Rosario: 1 for 4, HR, SO
Connecticut: RHP Dave McKae: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K--1 HR
Connecticut: RHP Ronnie Ray: 1.1 IP, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Kelvim Pichardo: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K--1 HB
Connecticut: RHP Josh Sharpless: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 K--1 WP
Rosario had his 10th HR. Richardson, one of three Defenders to reach base twice, provided the Defenders' other XBH with just his 5th double of the season.
McKae retired less than half the batters he faced, as he uncharacterically struggled with his control. He had issued just ten walks over his previous nine appearances. His ERA rose above 4.50, and it could have been more if Ray, who struck out three of the four batters he faced, had not stranded all three inherited runners. Pichardo retired just three of the six batters he faced in the 5th inning before Sharpless finished with three scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 3.51.
A+: San Jose had its final scheduled off-day
(Six games remain, three in Modesto and then three vs Lancaster.)

Salem-Keizer: 3B Conor Gillaspie: 3 for 5, 2B

Salem-Keizer: LHP Ari Ronick: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K--2 HR, 1 HB
Gillaspie had his best game yet as a pro, but the three hits raised his AVG to just .225 in NWL AB over ten games. Monell, the other Volcano with multiple hits, remained red hot, with his 11th XBH over his last ten games. Cook reached base three times or more for the third straight game, raising his OBP to .429 in 18 NWL games, after he had just a .304 OBP in 29 AZL games.
Ronick had four scoreless innings, but then allowed two runs in both the 5th and 6th inning, raising his ERA to 3.49.

Scottsdale: RHP Jorge Bucardo: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Scottsdale: LHP Ryan Verdugo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 6 K
Posey had his best game as a pro, including his 1st HR, his 1st triple and his 3rd double. He reached base in all five trips to the plate, although defensively he allowed his first passed ball. Mazzola also had three hits, raising his AVG to .346. Ziegler reached base four times, improving his line to .278/.395/.494 in 176 AB.
Bucardo had his fourth straight very effective start, which may also be his final start of the year unless he is promoted to the NWL like his older brother was a year ago. He lowered his season ERA to 3.68. Over his final four starts, the eighteen-year-old had 14 H, 5 BB, 1 ER and 30 K in 21.0 IP. Hennessey hasn’t sucked that bad lately. September callup? He’ll at least give the Bochy a power bat off the bench.
I thought they would have recalled Hennessey instead of Matos.
If for any reason Sanchez goes down early in his start next week, Hennessey is stretched out to take the ball for multiple innings, and he’ll be on regular rest.
Maybe they’ll call him up closer to Sanchez’s start and utilize Matos for a few days… and then sound down whoever is the weakest link in the pen at that time.
It’ll be September. They won’t need to send anyone down.

…damn – didn’t realize August was almost over!!!
I still think Hennessey has some value as a 5th starter / long relief guy in the league. One of the characteristics of the pen in the last few weeks has been the absence of a reliever used to throwing multiple innings or emergency starting.. I wonder if Misch or Hennessey is suitable to that role in the future?
Hennessey would have been a much better choice than Matt Palmer, that’s for sure. I guess it doesn’t matter, because Palmer’s two losses isn’t the difference in a pennant race, but he’s been dreadful. Usually when a guy’s been in the minors till he’s 29, there’s a reason.

Really?
Hennessey in 16 ML innings this year: 12.94 ERA, 2.813 WHIP
Palmer in 12 2/3 ML innings: 8.53 ERA, 2.368 WHIP
Hennessey in 132 1/3 innings with Fresno this year: 4.83 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 22 HRs (!!)
Palmer in 135 innings with Fresno this year: 4.13 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 11 HRs
Yes, Palmer’s been dreadful. Hennessey has been equally dreadful or even worse.
Like Barry Zito, I'm mildly half-OK.
Andruw, myself along with all the other giants fans would like to thank you for cashing that paycheck. Have fun at first base.

Tell me about it
I paid 17 bucks for him in my fantasy league. Was almost as big a mistake as trading Billingsley for Rich Hill.
Break It Out Buster!!!
Ya ya…..I know it’s early, but Posey sure makes wish the 2009-2010 season was here already!!

Posey to Augusta
Would be cool to see Buster get some ABs for the GreenJackets in the last week of the season.
He’s from GA, and who would he be taking ABs from? Dayton Buller??? He could really help that offense and it’d be good to get him to play with some guys who’ll probably be team-mates next year….
Playoffs too!

Send him to SJ! I want to see him haha. I’m selfish but I don’t care. Besides Jackson Williams is not Buster.

I've heard that the Sally league is going to ban Mad Bum from pitching soon
They say he’s too good.
Only 849 games until the end of Zito's contract
maybe not. in the 4th, he allowed his first ER since 7/22.

the run actually would have been unearned if he had just not given up a harmless single later in the inning. He allowed a single earlier that his outfielder booted and allowed the batter to get to third.

The joy of scoring
It’s unearned if the runner gets into scoring position on an error or some other botched play, yes?

You hypothetically reconstruct the inning without the error. Because of the single later in the inning, the run would still have scored. It just would have scored later in the inning. That makes the run earned.
Would it kill them to base the scoring system on things that actually make sense?
