I want a Cy from a GIant!!!!

Long as I can remember, I've wanted a Cy Young from a Giant.... or... my ultimate dream.. a Giants pitcher to throw a no-no.

I've been SO pissed at the Red Sox... because a) they've WON while BECOMING the evil empire (and somehow their fans still think they're the underdogs... LAUGHABLE) while effing Clay can't pitch anymore Buchholz pitched one, AND Jon yay for me overcoming cancer Lester got one too... UGH.....

I'm not as much of an ass as I seem like... honestly good for them but why can't Timmy the franchise throw one, or Matt Cain... GIVE SF A BREAK!!! NO HITTER OR SERIES WIN NOW!!!! 2009!!!!! or any reasonable years from then.

Not expecting spirited discussion on this... just the most +1's EVER.  Do it folks.

But seriously... Webb has a solid candidacy at the moment.

I looked 2 days ago at ESPN’s stats page for pitchers, and Webb is ahead of Lincecum in all kinds of things: BAA, OPS against, etc. Lincecum leads in ERA (important) and K’s (not very important…. what?? if a batter GETTING K’s isn’t that bad statistically, then a pitcher THROWING K’s can’t be the highest value attribute either, can it?). Both are having great seasons, and I think we all know that Cy Young voters pretty much only look at wins, and Webb will have more than 20— the ultimate odometer award: once the first digit clicks over to 2, you can clear the space on the mantel.

I would love to be talked out of the above. Takers?

webb will

win, but Lince has had the better “offense independent” year, by almost every advanced value stat (i.e. VORP, win shares, PRC) – the exception being support-neutral wins (I suspect because Tim has been so consistent).

Look at quality of competition.

Lincecum has had eight starts against the elite offenses of the NL (Mets, Cubs, Phils, Cards, Brewers). Webb has had five.

Lincecum has had six starts against the offensive doormats (Nats, Pads, Giants). Webb has had seven.

Each has had three starts against the Rockies. Lincecum has had two in Coors, one at home; Webb has had two at home and one in Coors.

Also, look at unearned runs. Timmy has allowed five, Webb nine.

The only argument Webb has on his side is that it’s much harder to pitch in Arizona than in SF. I don’t think that’s quite enough to make up for all the other stuff.

Tim’s getting some notoriety, but I think Brandon Webb’s history of excellence is going to be a major factor in his favor.

by tyrannoman on Aug 28, 2008 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions

K's are one of the most important pitching stats

Every K is a near zero percent chance of a batter reaching base. Every ball hit in fair play can create a baserunner, even if it becomes an out. When you lower the balls actually getting into play you lower the number of baserunners.

One pitcher could have a higher BABIP while still giving up fewer hits because of a strikeout discrepancy (and luck.)

The way I see it

They peaked somewhere between the middle of the second season and the beginning of the forth. The fifth was still pretty funny, but less good. The sixth and seventh were meh, and that’s when the characters started turning into complete caricatures (especially Monica and Joey). Then the eighth was a bit better with the Rachel pregnancy thing. The 9th and 10th were awful.

There were some really good episodes with emotional depth in the early seasons of Friends. The episode where Carol and Susan get married is a great one for that, as is the episode where Monica considers artifical insemination.

So are you angry about not getting to watch football or at the actual series itself because you saw it, made an accurate critical judgement and then decided you didn’t like it? Either one is acceptable.

The OC was fantastic

I always laugh at people who make fun of it, yet never saw any of the first season. Brilliant writing. Unfortunately it got pretty stupid in the 2nd and 3rd seasons, too soapish. That and they got away from some of the themes that made the first season so compelling.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 27, 2008 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Thank you

I think season 2 is still good in places. The Summer/Seth/Zach thing was stupid, the comic book was stupid, Marissa really began to annoy me in that season, Julie’s scandalous past stuff and her jerkoff Lance guy was stupid. But the Trey arc (aside from the OC Confidential when they busted the drug guy on the beach, ugh) was really fantastic and explored a lot of good stuff plus opened up the stuff for the season finale which was mind-blowingly good.

Season 4 redeemed the series, at least the first nine or so episodes of the season. Then again they sort of got away from all the good stuff they built up and got stupid, but the finale was great again.

Liked the 4th season

It indeed redeemed itself. They should have just killed off Marissa in TJ in the first season. It would have saved us from Oliver. And then Ryan could have gone into major depression and angst faze. That would have been a lot better.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 27, 2008 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally agree about Marissa. There was real potential for growth with her after her parents split up and that, but they pissed it away. After that I just stopped caring about her character. She was SO STUPID about Oliver, Johnny, et al that I wanted to put my fist through the television listening to her stupid shit.

I was disappointed

Summer should have got more airtime. Same with Dr. Roberts. Michael Nouri is a good actor and he probably could have used the work.

Also maybe we could have met the stepmonster. Although I can see why maybe it was better to keep the myth about her and never have her actually shown.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 27, 2008 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Summer really was the breakout star of the series. She should have had top billing all along, but OMFG MARISSA’s latest drama with her bad hair day and her cocaine and drinking and I can’t choose a boyfriend shit. God. So glad when she died.

Plus Rachel Bilson is like a hundred million times better looking than Mischa Barton but whatever.

I was drifting in and out of sleep one day and the TV was on, and there was an episode of Psych. I laughed—mostly coughed—a lot at the episode. I decided to give the series a shot after I was no longer a captive audience and I was hooked.

I liked Dule Hill in The West Wing and had no idea he could bring the comedy like he does as Gus. And James Roday is just aces plus both are pretty nice to look at.

I think last season (or the 1st half of season 12) was very strong.

Tonsil Trouble – Philadelphia/Cartman/Aids was very very demented and classic cartman that we hadn’t had in a couple seasons.

Britney’s New Look – I thought had a strong point to make about our feeding frenzy for celebrity gossip and how we may be contributing to Britney’s emotional troubles.

Major Boobage – Heavy Metal awesomeness.

Canada on Strike – I see people quoting this episode in the GDTs. A nice smack at the Hollywood writers.

Eek, a Penis – I don’t remember the subplot but whatever. Probably the weak link of the season. Garrison decides to become a man again.

Over Logging – Grapes of Wrath meets internet porn. Amazing ep.

Okay here they are: “Far Beyond the Stars” “Emissary” “Duet” “Past Tense 1 and 2” “Trials and Tribbleations” “In Purgatory’s Shadow/By Inferno’s Light” “Children of Time” “A Call to Arms” “The Sacrifice of Angels” “In the Pale Moonlight” “Take Me Out to the Holosuite”

Buffy – “Once More with Feeling” Non-musical division: The one where Buffy asks for advice from Spike and he tells her about how he killed the two slayers. Also, the Season 3 Finale.

Simpsons – There’s no way I narrow it down to even the size of the list I have for DS9.

I posted this just as a sort of "hey it's my dream but it won't happen" thing

I’m sure someone already said this, but shit…. I didn’t even REALIZE what a good case Lincecum actually DOES have for the CY.

Leads League in ERA
Leads League in K -—- by a LOT actually.
Would just about lead league in W if he had a team that scored runs.

(that’s a triple crown folks)

I’m gonna say that in the last 5 starts he has, if he can get within a victory or two of Webb, that he really should be the Cy.
Like, say… Webb flounders a bit, gets to a final record of 21-7 and sees the ERA climb a tiny bit, while Lincecum is lights out and goes 4-0 in the final 5 starts while the ERA just drops.

That’d leave us with a 21-7, ~3.00 ERA, ~180K Webb, vs. a 19-3, ~2.35 ERA, ~245 K Lincecum. Lincecum’d have my vote for sure.

once you hit that 20-mark it's pretty much yours

unless the other guy hits 20+ as well. they’ll also look at if your team made the playoffs, because of course, you cannot be a valuable player if your team sucks. I would say those are the two biggest determinates of the Cy Young. ERA plays in there too, but I think wins will trump it.
