Forget ROckies/Giants

There’s Red Sox/Yankees going on tonight! Last game ever in Yankee Stadium!!! A sure-fire five-star classic! My only hope is that I can catch some of the highlights on ESPN, if they even show them. Like manna from heaven!

Seems pretty unlikely. We’re currently at #8, and the next three teams ahead of us are the A’s (2 games) Rockies (3 games), and the Orioles (4 games). We could pass any of those teams, but to pass all three and stay ahead of all the teams that are barely behind us seems like a stretch.

Indeed. But he’s not going to improve if he’s never playing against them. He may never improve anyway, but I’d rather give him the shot, as we eventually did with Lewis. Especially if it’s a shitty lefty (see above).

As I explained below, the 2005 season was pretty important to me

That year, I remember going to a game in May with my BFF. We went to the beach after the game, freezing cold and windy as usual. I was having one of my “what does it all mean anyway” periods and I’d just come to terms with the fact that I wouldn’t have the means to attend an out of state school. So I was standing on the beach, watching the tide roll in, and asking myself why in the blue fuck I even wanted to leave in the first place.

Ishikawa's splits

I looked ’em up for his full minor-league career:
vs RHP: 868 OPS, 1149 AB
vs LHP: 776 OPS, 386 AB

That’s a platoon split, but nothing horrible — about what Lewis featured, 100 OPS points. To my mind, either Ishikawa is finally fulfilling his promise and is now a real hitter, or not. Lefties, righties — throw him in there.

by wcw on Aug 26, 2008 7:26 PM PDT reply actions

How much is his performance boosted by his ’05 in the Cal League?

by xanthan on Aug 26, 2008 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

by year

971 / 902 in 2005
606 / 746 in 2006
846 / 715 in 2007
641 / 1068 in 2008

To my mind, it’s as valid to say there is no platoon split if you subtract 2008. Once you start slicing up into these 100-AB chunks (vs LHP), the numbers become pretty meaningless. Sample size matters.

by wcw on Aug 26, 2008 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

YES

The wins are irrelevant when Lincecums ERA is so damn low

unfortunately no, wins are not irrelevant

Webb will probably win it because 20 wins (I am assuming he will get there) is an impressive feat

The voters can’t ignore the large disparity between Lincecums ERA and Webbs. I don’t know if he’s going to keep it this low but a 2.48 ERA is just stupid.
