Interesting post on projected Elias Rankings for this off season. C, 1b, D.H. & O.F.ers are attempted.
Bengie a Type "A"?

So… does this mean Bengie’s a lock for Type A? Or could he conceivably drop statuses if he performs poorly next year? I’m sorry, I really have no idea how this all works.

No one really knows, outside of Elias, the formula. Some people have been trying to reverse engineer it for years. I would not treat gospel but more of an informed guess.
If he was a free agent this off season it mean he would probably be a Type A. These rankings the use the last 2 seasons so yes he could easily slip with a bad season in ‘09 or a combination of some several great seasons for others and a poor ‘09.
Perhaps to key things ( to me) to take from this are Molinia is position to be a compensated free agent next winter. And the names of other free agents available this winter and what they might cost a signing team.

But we’d have to offer arb to receive the picks, right? At his age, I wouldn’t be surprised if he took it. But maybe it can be a positive in trade negotiations.

Well
He may take it, but that would depend entirely on what other deals were out there.
Bengie wants to play, and if after next year it looks like he is going to sit the bench behind Posoval he may want to go elsewhere.
And there are a lot of teams with catchers shittier than Bengie.

It would be a tough call
Assuming he slips somewhat from this year (he will be 35 at year end next year), since arbitration usually goes off of the previous years of production, it might offer him a better 1 year contract than the market would be willing to pay for 2 years. With Sandoval and/or Posey possibly ready to take over by 2010, it’d be a risky move. A lot can happen between now and then, could be interesting.

Also consider (barring major drop off or a sudden raise in the average catcher) a healthy Molina next June /July. It would make him a nice beat as a rent a catcher for a contender. Not only an up grade for a post season push in ’09 but if he moves on said contender might very well get a pick or two to recharge their farm with.
Which would, in turn, argue for Pablo making the big club out of spring so Molina can be rested regularly and often enough to keep him fresh.

Winn is also an A on this list!
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.

I noticed that as well. For some reason I feel Winn would be a type “b” at best next off season. Nothing I can pin down other then I believe it very possible a number of outfielders have real good ‘09s is more likely then the number of Catchers doing so.
Plus I think he would accept arbitration just to stay home. Normally I applaud the later but unless the management plays a couple O.f.ers currently in the minors and they turn into Linden with about 350 MLB P.A.‘s and 600+ innings ( each) in the field in ‘09 I don’t think arbitration is in the team’s best interest.
However a team needing an O.F. for next season post season race should be very interested. Which leads to the next question. Should the Giants be playing Winn in C.F. the rest of the season to show case that he can still play that position? The center fielder free agent market is rather sparse this off season. It looks a lot like the Third baseman list. Ok maybe not quite as bad but closer then is decency should allow.
