We already did that, except with a shitty pitcher.

This Makes More Sense Then You All Are Giving It Credit
The logic is not direct but it does work out. The benifits would be the following:
1) Takes pressure of the mentally weak Zito and puts the pressure on mentally strong CC. Thus we get two better pitchers and not just one.
2) It is easier to sign a high dollar pitcher to come play at AT&T then it is to sign a high dollar bat.
3) By doing this the Giants can now trade both Cain and Sanchez for the big bats we need and these bats will not have the option of signing elsewhere.
4) Don’t need to spend big bucks on offense since we can trade for young and cheap rather then sign older and expensive.

we can trade both Cain and Sanchez?
and have a rotation of Lincecum, Sabathia, Zito, Correia, and Pat Misch?
by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 25, 2008 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You Are Forgetting About
Lowry, Bumgardner, Alderson, Sosa, and Martinez. We would not just be limited to Misch as our only option for 5th starter. You are also most likely expecting Zito to remain marginal. I think taking the pressure off Zito by signing CC would ease his mind and allow him to be the pitcher he was for the A’s post his Cy Young year.

Just Look How Fast Cain Arrived
Not saying they could start 2009 in the big clubs rotation but coming up later in 2009 is a real possibility.
by giantsrainman on Aug 25, 2008 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cain is the absolute best-case scenario, and you are saying they would each come up at least a year earlier than him.
Not happening.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.

Cain Came Up At 20 And They Can Too
Not saying to plan on it. Just saying it could happen. If it doesn’t how are we any worse off then we are this year with so many starts going to Misch and Palmer? If the top is four are better then we can afford for the 5th to catch up.
by giantsrainman on Aug 25, 2008 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you are advocating trading Cain and Sanchez, then you most certainly are “planning on it”.

Nope
Just planning on getting buy with whomever in the 5th slot until one is ready.

I'm not forgetting about anybody
I’m just trying to be realistic. I hope Lowry comes back to his pre-injury form next season but I think that’s a pretty optimistic view. MadBum, Alderson, and Sosa haven’t thrown a pitch in the upper minors and Martinez is not thought of as a great prospect by anybody other than optimistic Giants fans. As far as your amateur psychology on Zito, I think delorean pretty much sums that up.

LOL
Why isn’t Lincecum pitching like an ace taking any pressure off of Zito?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

He Doesn't Have A Larger Contract Then Zito
and therefore doesn’t have larger expectations. CC would have both a larger contract and larger expectations.

Then Why Do They Boo?
They boo because they want him to live up to the contract. If his contract is no longer the largest on the Giants there will be alot less booing when he struggles and thus he will be able to relax and suceed more often then not..
by giantsrainman on Aug 25, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It Is Not Just the Sucking
It is the contract and expectations that come with it as well. If Zito becomes the second highest paid starting pitcher the pressure will be alot less.
by giantsrainman on Aug 25, 2008 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They/we/I boo him because he’s stealing money at this point.

There was a game...
I think it was Alex Sanchez? That crappy outfielder we got one time, who just plain sucked. This one game, he struck out something like three times at the plate, and commited a couple errors in center field. Prior to that, he sucked horribly already. That night, the crowd was viciously booing this guy.
He was making maybe 2mil that season, if that much. Want to know why he was booed?
Because he sucked!

Ah, so that’s why the fans booed Jose Castillo. He wasn’t meeting the expectations of his huge contract.

Don't Recall Much Castillo Booing
I think you are confusing attack posts here with boos at the ballpark.

So it didn’t happen?
BTW, nobody boos Zito when he pitches well.

Sorry, you’re right. It’s so easy to confuse written words with audible feedback from fans at games that I’m not obviously watching because all I do is read blogs.

Slightly OT, but
It’s funny also, how we’ve had like a billion “trade Cain” threads, with nary so much as a “trade Timmy” comment.
Frankly, I don’t advocate either, but it astounds me that all these people looking at the roster and thinking “Young, phenomenal, low cost pitcher who could bring back Jimmy Rollins (etc.) in a trade… who could that be…?” don’t even seem to consider that we might, you know, have more than one of those.

I totally agree
I think its a somewhat real possibility. Only part I disagree with you on is trading BOTH Sanchez and Cain. One of them certainly but not both. Its not totally inconceivable to think we could sign CC, deal Cain for a young SS who can hit and deal Lowry for a bench bat or a bullpen arm is it? If we could pull that off and Sandoval makes a smooth transition to 3B we might just win the west in ’09. even if we didnt a 1-2 punch of hardthrowing, but otherwise polar opposites CC and Timmy would be a ton of fun.

NOW I REALLY REALLY HATE THE ZITO SIGNING
of course, this is exactly the type of thing I predicted would happen when we signed Zito. It would take away in future years, the team’s ability to sign good players. I’d so much rather have CC than Zito at the same price.
Not that I’d advocate going after CC, but if Zito’s contract weren’t on the books, I’d certainly have much less of a problem with it, though it would be contrary to the Giants’ rebuilding strategy. And I’d much rather have Cain for cheap than sign another $100M pitcher.

It would be cool to have CC
But unless we can move Zito I just don’t see this happening.

IF a king’s ransom is had for one of our young pitchers in Cain or Sanchez, or Zito decides he doesnt need the money, then i can see this happening. Otherwise as much as it hurts, we’d have to pass.

This is the multiple choice question.
What do you do with hundreds of millions of dollars?
A. Sign Zito
B. Sign Sabathia
C. Other
Option B is much better than option A, but option C is the correct answer.
by rotorueter on Aug 25, 2008 11:20 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
OPTION C PLEASE
I’d pay off my debt and then buy a Sex Pad instead of a regular house
And then I’d probably still have like 125 million dollars., so I think I’d go on a world cheese tour, except I’d have the cheese tour to me because I can’t be bothered to leave my Sex Pad. Not with all the sex I’ll be having, and all the cheese I’ll be eating.

As I said in a different post,
as crazy as it sounds, this could still pencil out over the next several years. Yes, they would be paying about $40 million/year for two of the five rotation slots, with the remaining three (Lincecum/Cain/Sanchez) not costing them $25 million/year between them. And remember that the rest of the lineup during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, especially in 2010 would not cost them a great deal once Molina, Winn, and Roberts move off the books.
If Zito even strung together decent (13-10, 4.00 ERA) seasons the next two years, they could eat some salary and move him off the books at the end of 2010, just when they would need that money to pay Cain and Lincecum boatloads of cash. And they could move Sanchez also, just at the time that perhaps Alderson and MadBum would be ready to join the rotation in 2011. I suspect that a rotation of CC/Lincecum/Cain/MadBum/Alderson would be pretty stiff for the rest of the league, and we’d have Posey, Sandoval, Villalona, and Lewis to build around for relatively cheap.
The problems are whether or not the ownership wants that high a payroll for 2009, and what giving CC that kind of money does to their relationships with Lincecum and Cain over the next several years.

The more I think about this, the more it seems to make sense to me… $65 Mil for a rotation that has Matt Cain as the #3? Taking the dollar sign off of Zito and putting it toward the starting rotation: Lincecum, CC, Cain, Sanchez/Lowry, Zito for $65 mil? I think I’d pay that (if I were in Giants Management). Home grown reinforcements could be arriving as early as 2010, why not get a big name pitcher the likes of CC and wait one more year on the kids to either make it or die?
It stands to reason that the Giants payroll will only increase as the years go by. The Comcast deal put more money in their pocket, we have a suck team and still can sell 30,000+ tickets for a day game against the Nationals. Why not, other than we got burned on Zito?
by dogdays on Aug 26, 2008 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is certainly not a horrible idea
1.) Not blocking anyone
2.) Low-risk
3.) Helps the team a LOT over the next 2 years at least. CC is going to be about + 3 wins, compared to Correia who, at best, is about neutral. (this season about -1)
4.) Allows Correia to slide back into being the long man, a role in which I think he would have huge success. (And a role in which this bullpen needs help). Yabu isn’t likely to repeat this season’s performance at his age.
5.) Brings star power and credibility to the team, helping out the BO. Better BO means more operating budget.
I personally like our chances in ANY series w/ this team feat. CC, Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez.
The only real concern is the chances that the contract ends up creating a budget crunch when Caincecum hit FA.

I would love to have Sabathia on the Giants because he’s awesome and one of my favorite non-Giants players. However, unless CC is willing to take an extreme hometown discount, I don’t see this happening. It’ll probably take a pretty sizeable contract in years and moneys to get him, and the last 28 year old pitcher with Bay Area ties we gave a big contract didn’t do too hot.
by Natto on Aug 25, 2008 2:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
it would really sting watching cc sign with the dodgers because we’d already blown so much cash on zito… so i sincerely hope cc is wearing pinstripes by this time next year, i guess, because he isn’t going to sign with us.
