School: Fall 2008
I'm sure that many of you are going to school again this semester. So here's the place to list where, what classes, and whatever else you want to.
I'm not sure how many of you n00bs know, but I'm sure the veterans here know I moved to Wisconsin and stopped my schooling 3/4 of the way to transfering from West Valley to a State school. I'm finally getting around to going back to school now, trying to finish up an associates degree at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County. It'll take me a year but I'll get that and then decide where I want to transfer. Anyways on to the classes I'm taking.
General Anthropology
General Chemistry I: Lecture, Discussion, Lab
Economics - Macro
Intro to Philiosophy
And I'm hoping that I'll be able to just launch myself back into classes after a year and a half of no school.
Anyways, post what you're going for this year!

I've been in school
but I graduate in September, completing my second Bachelor’s degree, a Bachelor of Sciences in Animation. I’m taking Production and 2D Animation Studio, which are classes where I’m part of a team creating an animated short. I also have Portfolio II, where I’m putting everything together to get ready for graduation, and Editing Techniques, which is a pointless class because it’s pretty much playing around in Final Cut Pro. I’m going to be a busy guy in the next four weeks.
Sweet!
I may have to take you up on that offer. We haven’t been doing very well in the music department thus far. We’ve had some flaky guys.

I’m between schools (I think, probably) and working full-time right now. I needed some time away from education, but I have every intention to go back and get a masters in creative writing. And from there (or before then, who knows… either way, it doesn’t diminish the value of going back), I’ll become totally famous for my awesome words and junk.
And then I’ll make a “hai guys, buy mai bookz!” FanPost.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
Hey, a masters in creative writing! I have one of those. Mine is an MA, though, as opposed to the usual MFA.
Yeah, I’m looking more seriously at the MFA, though I haven’t actually done much (read: any) research on school/programs yet (like I said, REALLY NEEDED a break). I’m hoping to get motivated in 2009, but even I realize that might be optimistic, since it’s late 2008 and I’m still nursing some serious “ugh… school…” vibes.

So approximately next February we can officially call you DrK, and complain about how you never really listen to us, and your handwriting is illegible? Cool. DrB would be so proud.

I’m starting my senior year at Boston College, English Major, History Minor (I know, I know).
I think I need to do a Senior honors thesis, but the proposal for that is due on Sept. 6th and I haven’t exactly started it yet. Uh. Anyway, my classes are:
HS: End of History and After (something communism blah blah)
HS: The Middle East in the 20th Century
EN: American Literary History III
EN: The City in Literature and Film
EC: Microeconomics (my last gen ed requirement)
I’m pretty excited about all my courses actually, which most likely means they’re all going to SUCK.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
That Middle East class sounds really cool. I have to take a few history-ish classes for my major. Probably something like the class you’re taking!

I was going to English Major/History Minor… but Cal, ridiculously, doesn’t offer a history minor, so I went with creative writing instead (which was actually what I should have been planning to do all along, anyway, and what I wanted to do all along, anyway. So it worked out!).
I don’t know why I was thinking of History to begin with. I’m lousy at it and I don’t really enjoy the study of it in general… but you know what they say: “everyone experiments in college.” I’m just assuming that’s what they mean when they say that. I don’t know what else they’d be talking about.

If you are into creative writing
History is actually a good field of study. Studying human nature and such really helps when writing about humans. It’s something that I think more writers should do. Please feel free to disregard my post if you plan on writing fiction about talking animals or aliens.
Only 849 games until the end of Zito's contract
I agree. I always do background research on stuff when I write fiction. I owe it to the setting/people/time/place to represent them correctly.
Of course, there was the time when I tried to research polyamory for a short story I wanted to write. I tried to ask some general questions about polyamorous relationships and I got a bunch of angry poly people going HOW DARE YOU at me. Oh well, I suppose they’re content with being represented as oversensitive reactionary assholes.

Last!
Last semester before I transfer to university! Yay! Fall 2009 I begin university as a full time student, majoring in political science/global studies, and minoring in journalism.
Just two classes this semester, also my last as a part time student. Television and film scriptwriting and mass media of communication. I’ve had one meeting for each class so far. The media class is cool because we’re covering everything in the media, and doing a range of projects. One project for the class is developing a pilot for a television show. Obviously I need the media class for the journalism minor, and the screenwriting class is just for fun. Although there is a broadcast component to the class and my prof is allowing me to do some creative stuff geared toward features and TV as well as short form for news and broadcasting.
Both my profs are great. The media prof has been a magazine editor for eons and worked in producing television. The screenwriting prof has a master’s in film from SF State with an emphasis on screenwriting so she knows her shit. The class is sort of a drag with all the unwashed film geeks going OMFG WOMEN ARE IN THE CLASS but I’m used to being a female out of place.

Sounds like the inverse of my college experience. My semester after I transferred, I had two classes in which I was one of only two guys in the class: Feminist Theory and 19th Century English Lit. I’m pretty sure the other guys in those classes were both gay.
The screenwriting prof asked the five other women (and me) in the class to stay. She says we need more of the female voice in the trade.
Which I guess means I can’t write any of my slash stuff into scripts…

I’m sure Jake Gyllenhall would be up for some slash work. maybe a radcliffe/gyllenhall connection? who knows?
But in all seriousness, it’d be awesome if you got into the screenwriting business. It’s really lacking female talent, mostly because nobody has taken the time to develop it properly. Juno aside, I’ve generally enjoyed female authored scripts. so bully for you and good luck.

My sportswriting mentor knows a guy who wrote for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat years and years ago. He says the guy always had wit and a sharp writing style. After a few years, sportswriting had beat him senseless, so he started writing for Hollywood. Now he’s one of the producers for the Bachelor. Crazy world, huh?
But yeah, I’m not looking to leave the glamorous world of sportswriting behind for a lush TV writing gig, but I figure the ability to write a script is just another tool in my arsenal.

You don't owe me any favors, but if I could ask for one anyway,
would you start a retro-sportswriting trend and actually write in complete sentences…dare I ask it….even paragraphs that are more than one sentence long? Today, predominantly not.

Registering for classes tomorrow in 14 hours! Econ major. I’ll just post after I register (the suspense must be killing you)

I’m actually pretty fond of the campus from what I’ve seen of it. Geisel Library is an amazing library.
Make me proud again Hen

If that’s the building I’m thinking of, I agree with you absolutely. When I visited, I wasn’t really too fond of most of the other buildings, though.

When did you visit? The Engineering buildings and new ERC are pretty nice.
by kingofthacove on Aug 25, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions
I visited about two/three years ago. I’m sure I didn’t see the entire campus, and I didn’t really go inside any buildings outside of the amazing library, but that was my impression at the time. If I ever go again, there’s a distinct possibility I won’t feel the same way.

I have not seen the campus at all
But what’s been said here matches up with what I’ve heard about it. All I really care about though is how expensive green fees are at Torrey Pines though.

That’s weird… this comment had refused to post, and now it’s magically here and not even where it should be.

National University of Singapore
I am on exchange from UBC Sauder School of Business in Vancouver.
I am essentially wrapping up my MBA this semester and will be done in December for good. Well except maybe 250 hours of studying over the next two years for my CFA, but who’s counting.
I will only be taking three classes as I am also working while I am out here:
Fund Management
Financial Statement Analysis
Investment Banking
Auditing periodically:
Asia-Pacific Business

that sounds hella cool. Is NUS hard to get into?
Anthony Bourdain says that Singapore has the best food in Asia.
you can't block the Bocock
I think
regionally it is a difficult school to get into. I think there were a few thousand applicants for the MBA program and this years class will be in the 125 student range, 195 when you include part time students. I know it is one of the best MBA programs in Asia.
Iam here on exchange, so I sort of back-doored the program. heyooooo.
The food is fantastic here and fantastically cheap. If you like all Asian cuisine I would agree that it is the best in Asia. Because of the country’s history and demographics, it has Chinese, Muslim, Indian, Maylai, Thai, and Satay cuisine. Clean and cheap and safe works for me.

What an edumacated group!
Oh to be young and in school full time again, it seems like such a long time ag—-oh wait, it was!
I have a BA in Liberal Studies and and MS in Education from CSUHayward – that’s right HAYWARD long before it become EBay University.
Currently I teach 4 and 5 year olds, and will be going back to school with them next Monday [and enduring 18 hours of faculty meetings in the mean time] I have a set of twins this year, that should be fun, oh, and a child who has the same name as my cat!
I recently realized that I won’t be able to chase after munchkins for very much longer so I’ve been exploring other options. This semester I’ll be slogging off to the Community College for an “Intro to Flash” class and another course on “Speech Pathology.”
Last semester I tried a class in “Library Services” to find out about becoming a children’s librarian zzzzzzzz
And before that I took some courses at SacState in teaching ESL – eh –
Nothing’s really sparked my enthusiasm yet.
Baylor University, 4th year, finishing up my History/American Studies double major degree this semester, just started today (and it already sucks. go figure)
And I really do miss Kruk and Kuip
Courses for this semester:
History of the U.S. to 1877
American Constitutional Law
Contemporary American Philosophy
Special Topics in Literature
History of Texas
Adopted Giant: Aaron King
Wearing the crown by 2011. Or at least the LOOGY hat
Those sound like interestingt classes (except the literature one)
But then I’m a history nerd so :p

UCSD
Starting my 3rd year. Econ major minoring in writing and/or education studies and/or psychology, not sure yet. Sampling lots of fun classes since I’m only like 5 courses away from completing my Econ major requirements. Plan on going abroad to London or Sydney in my Senior year. Not sure which. Leaning towards those places becuz they don’t require 4 language courses and I suck at languages. Spanish was the only thing I routinely bombed in high school, have forgotten it all by now. Courses!:
ltwr 8c: media writing
econ 120c: econometrics
econ 109: game theory
eds 130: umm “play with lil kids at an elementary school class”
ltwr 100: short fiction
and possibly trampoline class and journalism on the side.
Dorkishly Ive planned out the courses for my whole year but this post is long as it is.
Would be uber excited if I had a car+single+awesomer roomates. As it is I’m kinda looking forward to it. Have also considered looking into an MA in public policy/administration since most of my econ classes may revolve around that. So yay for planning stuff incredibly early during the summer woot woot!

weird how there are so many Poli Sci majors/law students/lawyers on here. What a bunch of assholes we all are.
I resemble that remark
Hey buddy, I’m also in the media so I’m a double asshole!

14 years since I started. Working on that ever-elusive “B.A.”. That’s when the real bucks start rolling in.
I should graduate in May. But then I should have graduated in May of 1998, too.
Because I can only do a MW or TuTh schedule, I’m usually stuck with awful classes that just happen to fit. I’m taking some hippie environment class and some hippie race/gender in America class. Then I’m taking some hippie English major class. On top of that, this stupid school makes you take two P.E. classes, so I’m forced to take hippie golf or hippie bowling, which are both fun, don’t get me wrong, but do I really need to take them to graduate?
Damn hippies.
I took hippie bowling for PE credit in high school. It was actually pretty fun. I also have to take two PE classes at SJSU. If I can get away with like judo or something that’d be fun, to get out my aggression and get credits all at the same time!

Absolutely gonna do yoga classes at State. I heart yoga.
